My point exactly. We can travel our asses off and still not cross an international border. Less need for a passport. Although I'm glad I have mine. Would've never gotten the chance to see a lioness take down a warthog close to the Mozambique border otherwise.

But what I was getting at is that the British were being accused of being isolated and we are far from that. We travel outside the UK far more than US citizens travel outside the US. We experience different cultures to a far greater extent.

I find it varies between different areas of the UK. Seems to be lots of nice looking women in London however I spent a few days in Notthingham and it was full of uglies.

I think if they built a big wall around Nottingham, and cut off their internet access, the probem would be easily solved. :p

It's not enough that you travel there, you (collectively) have to screw them, in order to break the chains of your Pictish/Celtic/Angle/Saxon/Jute/Danish/Norman genetic homogeny.

Phew, I'm glad you said collectively. And I love my Celtic genes so I'll hang on to them for now

The amount of feelings being caught in this thread is surprising .

Maybe it's because I'm not "indigenous British" lol

I am not indigenous either but by all accounts do consider myself Black British.

Anyhow, I accept Ninjas account; nice young man

He is forgiven and can come visit. I won't tell the Queen about this incident.

Feelsgoodman is marked for death with a capital 'M'. Mm-hmm..

Since the website was opened to UK members 295,000 people have applied, with only 35,000 being approved.

That's 0.47% of the UK's estimated population of 63M. All those figures prove is that 0.41% of British people are delusional about their 'beauty' according the 'standards' set by the beautifulpeople.com.

You have to eliminate most educated, successful Londoners from the equation because they tend to be more sophisticated, as you'd expect from any major city in the world. A lot has to do with money.

Still there are some shocking examples. I wish I could post photos of people I know in the UK. One man, a lawyer, looks like a character out of Dickens -- short and round with little hair on his head. Have you ever seen a horse's teeth? His were the same size and color. Several were chipped and broken off. His wife is more attractive and before I was introduced to her by a mutual friend, I was told "She is very American in how she dresses and acts." Meaning she wore clothes in bright colors, was very friendly and outgoing, fashionable haircut, makeup, etc. I could never understand what she saw in her troll-like husband who didn't even have a good personality. They had each left their respective spouses for each other, so I can only assume he was great in bed (the thought gives me nightmares) or had a lot more money than I suspected.

I know another couple -- husband inherited a lot of property, educated at Eton, hosted Charles and Camilla for a hunt. Sloppy in appearance, never wears deodorant, has bad teeth and a terrible stutter. Loves his dogs. If you ever read Watching the English, he is a "textbook case" of a typical upper class chap. Great sense of humor and very kind and helpful.

Appearance aside, I've had good experiences with most British people. Quite forthcoming and friendly once you get to know them (and they've had a few drinks). You can read the British expat forums and hear them whingeing about what is wrong with Americans, but it doesn't bother me. I think differences makes life more interesting. Why would anyone travel anywhere if we all looked and acted the same?

Once agin FitChick I have to point out to you that we do have schools, universities etc outside of London. Your "knowledge" appears to be extremely limited.

If you're shocked now, join me sometime for an anthropological field trip to a WalMart in central Texas.

Ironically, many British people have stated the UK is a far more xenophobic country.

You missed the point. I was talking about appearances. My country friends are educated and well off but look no better than the local yokels.

You'd be wrong. It's very easy for me to distinguish between the above three.

Yeah, I definitely have to agree. You certainly can tell the difference between English, Germans, Spanish, and other Europeans. This is especially true if you go to the beach.

No I did not. Yet again you referred to Londoners being educated as if nobody outside London can even read or write. You also repeatedly talk about green teeth, not using deodorant etc. I mean "yokels" for F- sake!

Have you any idea how stupid all this is? Have you any idea of how completely wrong and offensive this attitude is?

Oh yes of course which is why approx 80% of UK citizens have a passport and only 30% of US citizens do. Now who really is isolated from the rest of the world.....

Why more Americans don't travel abroad - CNN

House of Commons Hansard Written Answers for 20 Dec 2004 (pt 51)

And what exactly is your point? Are you expecting your passport to magically reverse two thousand years of inbreeding?

I'm not an American by the way. Why do Brits always assume that anyone who is not British must be an American? Seeing how you have a passport, you must be aware of the fact that there are other countries out there, right?

Posted

My daughter was explaining to me that via films imported to the US during the 40's and 50's, the American public were educated to think off the British as being upper class etc and they have basically never caught up with reality because they don't travel.

It is as simple as that.

I have a very negative view of the American way of life but I am told that they are different on their own soil, than as tourists.

After my daughter graduates we shall arrange a proper visit now that expense is out the way. Looking forward to seeing NY and Canada.

I can tell the difference in europeans, and asians too. I am pretty good at guessing where people are from originally, I do get it wrong from time to time though .

British people are markedly different from Germans and Scandinavians in my observations, although at a first glance without analysis, it is difficult to tell at the beginning.

I'll be honest: Most of the girls in London I find attractive are often of origins other than British. I've met some hot girls who are irish, but even they sometimes have italian in there somwhere or whatever.

Seeing as the majority of posters on this site are American and I do not know the life details of every poster, I assumed you were American. However my point still stands that the UK is not isolated (and in fact many Americans are descendents of people from the UK hence the same gene pool that many are condemning here)

Americans are usually the ones cracking wise about British people, hence the assumption.

Are you another Brit that thinks the majority of Americans come from the UK? I read somewhere that the majority of white Americans have around 1/4 German ancestry.

You also have to take into account the significant number of blacks, Latinos, Asians, Natives, mixed race, whites not from the UK here, and you'll come to the conclusion that only a minority of whites in the States have British ancestry. There is greater British ancestry in the Commonwealth than the States. I've heard some real negative things about the looks of British people (they're called poms in OZ) from Aussies, Kiwis, and Canucks than I've heard from US people.

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of whites in the U.S. with full blooded British descent is less than 1%. That's not many when you think about it.

I hate it when fun/bizarre threads take a clinical/academic turn. Not enough German ancestry, I guess.
