I do agree with usmchokie where, when wore right, gals might think it is soap since it is just this clean scent. so, we'll just keep that as our little secret about this stuff.

I've gotten compliment on Angel as well. I believe that is the one with a slight hint of coffee in it... maybe I forgot, there's been so many... but Angel is kinda unique.

Joop is another interesting one. Fun to try to say when someone asks, but so different, doesn't even smell like a cologne to me. Smells more like a Ken Doll to me with a plasticy kind of note. But it is unique, weird, funny colored and not good to spill on white pants right before a big date.

The one that got me the most compliments from random women is..... uh... I forget the really weird name and will post it when I get home. But I'd get a compliment every day I wore it. Some even getting that wide eyed, "mmmMMMUMMPH!!" smile on their face when they'd lean in for a second wiff... I just can't remember the name!!

Auqa Di Gio gets compliments

Just bought A&F Fierce but TO ME seems kinda weak and typical.

Been after the "clean just stepped out of the shower smell" for a while and tried many things. One of which was "Clean: Shower Fresh For Men" as well as the other Clean for men fragrence. Don't waste your $$ with them. They both smell like the stuff you'd use to clean and freshen toilet bowls. Straight up chemical smell.

Also, don't drink too much coffee. I use to drink pots of coffee a day. I use to have BO. I have always scrubbed and take many showers throughout the day. I am all about maintaining myself. I thought there was nothing I could do and that was just how it was. Read somewhere about coffee causing BO and can actually remember that I didn't have any problems till right around the time I started drinking lots and lots of coffee. I stopped and sure enough the BO went away. However, I also started taking chlorophyl pills like the stuff in "Body Mint" at the same time and maybe that helped too.

I use to think all foods/drinks could form stuff on your tongue that you need to scrape off. After I stopped drinking coffee (down to one maybe two cups a day), nothing really forms on my tongue anymore and my breath pretty much stays fresh on its own (the chlorophyl pills probably helps here a lot).

YOHJI is the name of the one I got the most compliments on

Pop evolutionary biology time!

The reason you see so many women disclaiming the value of cologne is because women judge a man's health by his scent.

This is the same reason men love to say they like women without makeup. Essentially, both genders are cheating the other gender on signals of healthiness. When women talk against cologne or men talk against makeup, they're trying to sucker the other gender into giving up better data.

Romantic, huh?

Makes sense to me!

And it is romantic to be in love with your man's natural smell, or your woman's bare face

I've been guilty of using too much myself. I only found out when my mum or brother would outright tell me. Usually, I go with 2 sprays on the neck and 1 on each wrist.

Four sprays? That still sounds like too much to me, but I have a sensitive nose. I only use two quick sprays myself -- along my inner forearms and rub the arms together. For a special date, I will also spray over the heart because warmth causes scent to rise. Men should do the same. When a woman gets close to your face and neck, she will smell the cologne as it wafts upward.

If I am standing five feet away from you and smell your fragrance, you are wearing too much. I've even had occasion to walk down a city block, see no one in sight and still be able to smell their perfume!

Dasein: Since you mentioned basenotes.com, a site I used to frequent, you should be able to buy decants and samples of Creed from the forumites. Unless they stopped doing that. It's a cheaper way to try the more expensive lines. You can also go to Sephora.

No cologne.

Just sweat. Preferably while making passionate love.

I've dated guys who smelled like their soap and deodorant - and loved it. Also dated guys who wore a reasonable amount of cologne and loved it as well.

The last guy I dated wore a cologne called BOD (that's what I believe he called it) and it was a major aphrodisiac.

He didn't wear it every time I was with him, though. Some days/nights, he just smelled like his soap/deodorant. I liked that he mixed it up that way.

I'm a fan of cologne when it smells good. It has an effect on me, for sure. If I'm dating the guy and he's good looking, I want to have sex with him all the more. If I'm not dating a guy and he's not that great looking but smells awesome, I feel like cuddling with him just to take in the wonderful cologne.

You're probably right :o I went from spraying one behind each ear, twice on the neck, once on each elbow and once on each wrist (total of 8 sprays - overkill) to 4 sprays and now I'm going to go down to 2 sprays. Thanks for the tip -- I think I'll spray over the heart. There's been a few girls I've met where I was just intoxicated by her perfume. It was very subtle and it had the effect where I wanted to take deep sniffs. It's always very sensual and I find it funny how a woman's scent can drive me crazy. That's the effect I want. When I spray my cologne I want it to be a part of me but subtle and definitely not something someone can smell five feet away from me. I've always wondered how these girls just get it right...

H has been wearing this one lately. Oh_My_Gawd.

Chaps, some tips:

1. Go easy. Spray your chosen scent once in the air at head height, right in front of you, and walk into the mist. That's all you need.

2. The high notes last about 30 minutes, so that clean, crisp citrus smell will eventually subdue and the heavier mid and base notes start coming through, so apply later not sooner if you want that freshness to abound when you arrive.

3. Use shower gel / soap / shampoo that compliments your scent. Spicy with spicy; citrus with citrus, wood with wood. Stick with the subtler, less powerfully scented cleaning products and let the cologne stand out.

4. Try different ones. It takes about an hour for perfume to reveal all its scents so you can't really judge it by a quick sniff in the store.

5. Get a female to help you pick. They're good at this.

don't really care for the over-use of cologne on a man, mostly because it triggers allergic response ... women's perfume is even worse because of the musky/floral tones. Citrus I can handle, the other stuff is too overwhelming.

that said, the one cologne I cannot resist on a guy ... to the point of wanting to hump the leg of someone wearing it ... is RL's Polo (green bottle). Old school, but oh, that stuff's pheromone in a bottle. We had a priest who used to wear it, and whenever he'd come back to our office at the chancery, I'd have to remind myself that lusting after collars was a bad, bad thing :love:

You might be surprised at the ingredients in perfumes and colognes. These are the ingredients in Polo:

Top Note: Cavaillon Melon, Mandarin Orange, Mouthwatering Open, Cucumber

Middle Note: Geranium, Basil, Sage Absolute

Base Note: Light Woods, Musks, Suede Note

Note the bolded? Floral and musk.

I wear Dior Homme Sport which has nice citrus type smell and isn't musky at all. I had a female friend the other day ask what I was wearing and I told her and she was joking around saying "oh wow you're making me wet down there" haha.. There is a great site called fragrance talk dot com where you can try samples you, that's where I purchased my sample of that from and it just has a very clean smell and it's not too strong.

I think there is a technique for applying cologne so it's not too strong so here's what I do.. I spray one spray on my wrist and rub it but then apply it with my wrists behind my ears and before it drys i rub the remainder near my neck and on my shirt or sometimes just a far away spray on my shirt then one on the wrist and rub my wrists together and then the remainder behind my ear..

The whole behind the ear thing I read was online because like if you were at a club or whatever talking you often have to talk loud or into each other's ears if you meet a chick and when she goes in to talk in your ear the scent is there or in general if you're hugging a chick she's near your ear.. Sounds kinda cheesy but I get the reason behind it hahaha. I would suggest checking out that website and you can buy samples and see which one fits you but I would highly suggest the Dior Homme Sport, it smells great.

interesting breakdown, TBF ... and now I'm wondering why that one doesn't bother me as much as it should? Though to be honest, it's women's perfumes that kill me more often than men's.

as for Polo, there *must* be an unlisted pheromone, because it grabs me by the tripas every damn time!

Honestly I don't like cologne. I don't mind it, but I would rather a man smell like himself.

If I HAD to choose, I would say Blue by Chanel is the most pleasant. I've never smelt a man and got aroused though. Maybe after I was attracted to the man himself, the cologne reminded me of him and I was aroused because of that.

But never a cologne alone.

I tend to sneeze a lot from smelling male cologne or any kind of perfume product - I tend to sneeze a lot when coming into contact with anything that comes in a spray bottle/aerosol.

The only guy I'm aware of that wore cologne that I liked and wasn't sensitive to, used a splash bottle rather than a spray bottle. Unfortunately, I can't remember what he used. It may have been something from Armani.

Overall, I'm partial to musky as well as light scents - depends on the man. However, my nose tends to be sensitive to the ingredients. Which is a shame because my partner's scent is very important to me and the world of scents intrigues me.

Lots of good, interesting info here. So, my take away from all of this collected data is... most women who post online have allergies? hahahahaha

Was I scientific in that assumption? :D
