So when should you suggest a meet up face to face with someone from OLD? Generally what is the accepted amount of time that should pass beforehand or messages that should be sent?

It's different for everyone. Do what is most comfortable for you.

No more than 3-4 messages before I get a number and ask them out.

Depends how long your messages are, how far away they live, what you've been talking about, etc.

If you've sent 3 messages back and forth the same day with a couple sentences of playful chat in each and she lives 50 miles away, no chance.

If you've emailed once a day for a week, with a couple paragraphs in each, and she lives 20 miles away, definitely go for it.

Conversations by email often reach a kind of 'peak' of intensity where you're finding out most about each other, or talking about interesting things, and then slowly taper down until you're just talking about what you're up to from day to day. Your goal is to ask to meet up at about the point where the interest on both sides is clearly at a peak.
