SJC2008 Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 When I was younger I got cute. Now I'm getting handsome and it seems outdated IMO. I guess it's a good thing lol. Give me your opinion of what handsome is if you don't mind. This isn't an ego boost or pic thread, I'm honestly curious.
KR10N Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Outdated? It's a respectful compliment, in my opinion. I use it often. I'm sure it's different for everyone. I'll use celebrities as examples. Justin Long is cute. Jensen Ackles is handsome. That's the best answer I can give you.
Author SJC2008 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 For some reason it just makes me feel old. AND my mother has tild me I'm handsome so I guess it's weird when I hear it from another woman.

Author SJC2008 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Mabye out dated is wrong, I just hardly ever hear women refer to men ad handsome. I always hear cute, hot and sexy.
Author SJC2008 Posted April 9, 2012 Author Posted April 9, 2012 Ok I just googled Jensen Ackles. He's more than hansome IMO.
NeverDated Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Mabye out dated is wrong, I just hardly ever hear women refer to men ad handsome. I always hear cute, hot and sexy. I feel weird calling my boyfriend "hot" or "sexy" to his face, especially in the heat of the moment. But then again I'm not a very "dirty" talker, and those words kind of strike me as, not disrespectful, but a little over the top. I also feel "handsome" and "beautiful" say far more than "hot" - the latter implies some kind of sexual attraction that doesn't, necessarily, include facial features. Handsome implies the whole package: face, body, mannerisms, etc. To me, handsome means the dictionary definition. Striking good looks. The kind of guy who makes your heart skip a beat when you see him. Kevin McKidd is a good example of it, IMO. Pretty much everything about him screams classically handsome.
threebyfate Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 Strong jawline, aligned teeth, aquiline nose, nice eyes, creasing on cheeks when smiling, lips that aren't too full but are well defined, some wear and tear on face.
Ruby Slippers Posted April 9, 2012 Posted April 9, 2012 I like to use the word "handsome" - but then I am an old school romantic. I use it to describe a man whose face I enjoy gazing at. To me, "cute" is fun and sweet, "hot" can be sexy but it's overused and obvious. "Handsome" has class and style - and that is how men take the compliment when I give it. It seems to register more than "cute" or "hot".
OhHey Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 I always get called handsome. Errr just a work-between rather than say "eh, average or ugly"
carhill Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Not a lady but let's see how well I do... Younger days Today This is a great example of how, IMO, a truly handsome man can transcend physical changes like MPB (baldness) and remain handsome as he ages. 2

xxoo Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 You do know that's Billy Zane, right? You mean that's not you??? Handsome is sort of equivalent to pretty in a woman. A pretty woman has appealing, feminine facial features. Similarly, a handsome man has appealing, masculine facial features. A man or woman can be hot or cute with less appealing facial features.
threebyfate Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 carhill, I'm going to have to disagree with your concept of handsome and aging well. This would be my concept of well-aged, like fine wine.

No, but I did have a childhood friend who was his spittin' image. Once he 'discovered' girls, he was long gone. Your points regarding facial features are well-taken. Contrasting against Billy, we have someone equally, if not more successful, in his craft, yet ostensibly not nearly as classically handsome, Jason Alexander, seen here with his wife Daena. Both have MPB, but Jason has a more rounded, less angular face, which is generally considered more feminine, and has softer facial features and a 'weaker' nose. To be sure, such things are nearly always subjective but general examples can help illustrate the range of 'handsomeness' one applies in their subjective view.

I didn't want to use Paul since he's dead and generally a 'slam-dunk', but point taken. He looked as good in real life as in pictures.
threebyfate Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 So MPD is the criteria? How about Sean Connery? Handsome!

johan Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 Green and steely-eyed, sarcastic, and all-around wonderful. That is my definition. Tee hee. Guys like that must be hard to find.
carhill Posted April 10, 2012 Posted April 10, 2012 You've seen or met him? Say it's the latter so you can tell us the story! 'Met' is probably not the proper word. Encountered might be better. He was well known for interacting at a very humble level with other racers. I followed/ran SCCA in the 80's and ran into him a couple times at Riverside when he had his 300ZX. During that time, we 'amateurs' weren't groupies to the 'professionals'; we were just fellow racers. I remember the softest of demeanor, meaning polite and respectful, as well as the ocean of blue (his eyes) when he looked at you, and he looked right at you when he talked or listened. I was still pretty 'shy' at that age (mid 20's) so didn't say much; mostly listened and learned. He was a darned good racer. Many years later my exW and I would be at a large car show in SoCal and she would comment on how many handsome men there were around and if she had only known when she was single. I told her I ran into tons of them at the races and she had missed out on them simply by not getting into car stuff, even though she had lived in the area many years. Now, this year, I'll be at the same show looking for hot women 1
