somedude81 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Ugh, this is ridiculous. I've always been a big fan of the Ninja Turtles. And then the girl I've obsessed over for so long was a big fan as well. She had a backpack, bought a poster when we were at the mall together that I helped pick out, and I burned her a DVD of one of the newer movies and I made a custom case for her. I spent hours getting everything perfect. And now whenever I see anything TMNT related, I instantly think of her and am overwhelmed with negative feelings. There are other triggers too, but this is the most prominent, mainly because of the new movie buzz. It's completely unfair that this is happening. It's bad enough that I couldn't get her, but not being able to enjoy the things I used to because my brain has associated her with them really sucks.
Philosoraptor Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 It's your choice to allow those to be negative triggers. I did the same thing after my relationship ended then realized I enjoyed those things for me, not for her... and most of them I enjoyed long before meeting her. Why give myself up?
USMCHokie Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I'm going to ask the first girl I see at the pool this weekend this very question. You've also just ruined the Ninja Turtles for me too...
ariadne999 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 And now whenever I see anything TMNT related, I instantly think of her and am overwhelmed with negative feelings. don't be sorry it's over. Be glad it happened. Try to look back on your friendship and see the positives. Surely, there were some? It's completely unfair that this is happening. Yes. and you should spend the rest of your life fighting all things unjust in this world. You'll never run out of **** to do. Promise I was into TNMT too, you know, when I was like 15.
Star Gazer Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I was into TNMT too, you know, when I was like 15. Even younger for me.
january2011 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 It happens. You learn to deal by making new memories and associations.
zengirl Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Oh, I thought this was going to be a post complaining about how everyone is saying Michael Bay "ruined" TMNT because he came up with the new "from space" component to their birth story. Anyway, we all have negative triggers. Most of mine were temporary. I cannot think of anything I permanently dislike because of a guy. But some lasted years. C'est la vie. They go away much quicker and form much less when you mature more, IME.
casanovadude81 Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Guys, I think SD is referring to his nostalgia regarding Ninja Turtles, rather than referring to the fact that he would still like to play with NT toys and watch marathons of the NT series. No he's talking about it in the present
Saxis Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 They can't unless you let them... Ugh, this is ridiculous. Yes, it is.
carhill Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Yep, when one gets to be an old fart and can look back and laugh at some of the foolishness and weaknesses of one's life path, it's actually a pretty good feeling. At 30 all that stuff is intense. It'll work out People 'ruin' stuff because we care enough to let them 'ruin' it. We risk ruin with our care. Part of living, IMO. 1
Feelin Frisky Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Cowabunga and guys in plastic turtle suits never flew with me.
Anela Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 arent you 30 year old? im sorry for such tragedy I'm 36, and still love E.T. I have a DVD of another movie I loved when I was seven, too. I have more than a few favourite books, as well. I've seen men set up train sets for their children, only to sit there playing with them themselves, and their kids are looking like this: 1
Anela Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 SD, I had something ruined for me, that I associated with that person, and I also had hurtful reminders of something all around me, due to something that I won't go into. It's no fun. It eases after a while, or has for me, but it hasn't gone away.
PlumPrincess Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 TMNT?? Good grief, you're 30! You're too old for that stuff! And a girl that is still into that stuff is too young for you.
Dust Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 TMNT?? Good grief, you're 30! You're too old for that stuff! And a girl that is still into that stuff is too young for you. I'm into you my PlumPrincess. We should have a party to be silly and goof about people like somedude where we all dress up as people from the Nija Turtles. You can be April Oneal and I'll be that guy in the hockey mask with golf clubs.
Saxis Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 TMNT?? Good grief, you're 30! You're too old for that stuff! And a girl that is still into that stuff is too young for you. If the field has grass, play ball!
EasyHeart Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Sheesh. Next the women will be telling us we have to get rid of our Sailor Moon collections. 1
Els Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Sheesh, what's with the judgement? Plenty of hobbies that were considered only for kids in the past, are now pretty widely accepted by people of all ages. SD, I think it's only human nature. The brain associates everything subconsciously, and once an association is made, it's often difficult to break it apart again. If you'll just focus on other hobbies for now and give it some time to heal, it will be better in the future. 2
Saxis Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I kind of see where he's coming from. I'm still a little "ruined" on marriage and having more kids because of the way things worked out with my XW, but those are major life-altering decisions without associating past negative experiences/people with them. But I don't throw myself into the pit of despair every time I see my daughter...
EasyHeart Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 I'm 37 and watch StarWars religiously, and wouldn't hesitate a second to buy an original Kenner toys 1980's X-Wing fighter if I see one at a rummage sale. Oh, I still build model airplanes....really cool ones Screw that....if I like it I'm not giving it up just because I get older..Okay, that's just plain weird. You should do what normal adults do: Have a formal Thanksgiving where everyone wears their Star Fleet dress uniforms. 1
poodle Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 That sounds very familiar. I've had that happen with food... I hope it's something that will pass with time.
gaius Posted April 4, 2012 Posted April 4, 2012 Go post flirt in some other thread and leave your holier than thou someplace else. When are we going to see Prometheus? It's good she ruined it for you somedude. Better than having to endure the new alien ninja turtles from krypton.
