AriesBunny Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 History is a part of who I am. Life is a journey and we only get one shot. In real life, the statement makes sense. Life is a journey and we only get one shot. To get the same change in the real world, identies will have to change, migration for a better future, and starting in a new area. In the online world, avatars and our words are extensions of who we are. We can shed our online history and change our persona. I do like your response.
johan Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Is there any chance we could just start this thread over? 4
AriesBunny Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 Is there any chance we could just start this thread over? Shall we ask the moderators to delete this thread and have Hokie start a new one with his new identity as the maskedUSMC?

For many, the virtual world is an alternative, fluid environment where they can change and mutate themselves from one moment to the next; perhaps, an 'escape' from the singularity of their defined and limited (by death) existence in real life. That makes sense. For myself, 'virtual' life is merely a wider extension of real life and I don't seek an alternative path or to 'reinvent' myself without respect to/for my past. Fortunately, existence gives us choices; technology gives us the means. Something for everyone 1

Saxis Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I mentioned this in the Off-Topic thread yesterday. For me, it's not about erasing my history as it is protecting my identity. I've shared too many identifiable details about myself and relationships which would most likely really offend the parties involved. 1
MrNate 2.0 Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 It's never too late. You can't change how your story began, but you can always change how it ends. 2

EasyHeart Posted March 29, 2012 Posted March 29, 2012 I can't imagine there's anyone on this board who hasn't posted something that they later wish they hadn't. That's what keeps us all together: mutual shame and embarrassment. 4
Ruby Slippers Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 What's with all the threads reflecting on the nature and philosophy of LS lately? haha And that's really the greatest benefit to sticking around here and being part of the community, no matter who you are or how f*cked up you are... It's just that sometimes I feel like I've shared maybe a little too much...so it sort of paints a permanent picture of me... That's better than what I usually do, which is present myself as the me a step or two ahead of where I am now, rather than really showing how much I'm struggling. The truth ain't pretty!
Author USMCHokie Posted March 30, 2012 Author Posted March 30, 2012 What would be the point of denying the past? That's something I've never understood. The whole point of life is growth. Seeing where we were and how much we've grown should be something to celebrate, not be ashamed of. I certainly don't think I have the same attitude or lifestyle now that I did when I first came to LS either, and I'm sure there are some past posts I've made that I'd never agree with today. That's good. Life is change, growth, and reflection. fwiw, I'd never think of your post history as particularly embarrassing, Hokie. And won't it be so satisfying when you resolve your ongoing issues and look back and realize how far you've come? Oh, I definitely feel like I've come a long way in the past 2+ years...I guess online, some things follow you wherever you go...whereas in real life, you can show up in a new place and truly be who you want to be without being judged or associated with your past... But I understand what you're saying, and what a lot of you are saying...positive change is great, and it's even better when you've done it with the people who have seen you at your worst... Yes, it's a really good pic btw, Hokie! Thanks...

Forever Learning Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 Nah. I like my identity pretty much. I've erred at times I admit but not committed melodramatic social suicide on the level of your no homo self. I kid. You're all right Hokie. ETA: And finally a face! I know! Finally a face!! And a VERY VERY handsome one at that! In honor of Hokie's bravery in showing his face, today I show my face as well, for the very first time, here on Loveshack, in my avatar!! Oh sh*t wait, I already did that back in my Hurricane Frisky's Bang Biscuit thread. Damn. Oh well, it's the thought that counts! But seriously, Hokie my friend, you are an awesome fella. Keep on keepin' on my good man. You rock, remember that! 1
january2011 Posted March 30, 2012 Posted March 30, 2012 I kinda did. Not proud about how that came about though. I felt that it changed my persona and posting style, and not necessarily for the better. Though for good and bad, everything that I post is still a part of me and I feel that I must stand by what I post, even if I later think that I could have given a more thought out and kinder response during certain exchanges. Starting over can be useful but if you are going to have similar exchanges with posters, I don't think it's going to be the panacea and 'fresh start' that you're hoping for. In my opinion, if you really do want to make a fresh start then I'd just stop posting on this site and find a new one. If after a long while you decide to return, the conditions might be more favourable. However, judging by the support network you've built here, perhaps you are too well liked a poster for that to be an easy option to take.
