Hey everybody im 5ft1 86 lbs, and I need to gain weight, cuz well the fact is that im too skinny, and I know it. I hear "oh, youll be thankful for it when you're older"...when the truth is that if I ever want to be taken seriously in an office environment, I need to look like I wont blow over in a windstorm. I dont have an overactive thyroid, but I was born really early (dunno if that factors in) so Ive always been smaller than the norm, I try to get to the gym and lift so I can get some muscle on, im workin 40 hrs a week.

um, you're a 5'1" 86lb female? I think that's about right for being fit for your height...so just let me say Don't Look Like A Man. At 5'9" and 170lbs with as much muscle as I carry I often find myself murmuring "That's a man baby!" cuz some womenz is too damn manly.

how much weight do you think you need to gain anyway? I hope not more than 10lbs...because that would be something like 25lbs on a woman that's 5'6". Bah, don't do things for other people...only for yourself :p. You want fat or muscle or a combo of the two?

Matilda...that weight chart is useful for me also. But how do you know what frame type you are?? I would have to say I'm medium, because I have broad shoulders and so on....

I am 5ft 2 and at last weigh in...was 108 pounds. Which means I am either at the bottom end of healthy for a small frame, or slightly underweight for a medium frame.

I would use these charts as a guide. Find a weight that you can maintain comfortably (without force feeding yourself), where you look good (not like a skeleton) and are healthy.

Quick Reference to Find Your Frame Size.

Keep in mind that this is a far less accurate measurement method.

To calculate your frame type place your thumb and index finger around your wrist. If your finger overlaps the thumb, your frame is a "Small Frame". If they touch, your frame is a "Medium Frame". If they do not touch, your frame is a "Large Frame".

This link tells how to do it by actually measuring your elbow and wrist, which is more accurate.

Here is a link in which a nutritionist gives good advice on how to gain weight when you're too thin:

Thanks Matilda. Good info.

I once heard the 'rule' for women is 100 lbs for 5 ft of height, and then 5 lbs for every inch after that.
