So, I had a meeting at a coffee shop with two fellow business owners this morning, and as part of my efforts to really step up my look lately, I wore a nice suit, with a well-fitted black blazer, slim black pants, a vibrant red shirt, and pointy heels. I did my hair and makeup nicely, and wore subtle but elegant jewelry. Also, I'm tall, and even taller in heels, which adds to the effect. I looked basically like this, but with my hair down and a RED shirt: http://www.carefair.com/data/uploads/istock_000003257261_l.jpg

While we were standing around talking, waiting for our coffee, this GORGEOUS man, also tall and in a sharp business suit, turned around, looked me up and down, and just stared right into my face. I smiled, but I was caught up in the conversation, so continued with that. He just kept staring at me as we were all waiting. I wish he had found an in and said hello!

Then I sat down, we started talking, and I noticed that every guy around us was staring and appeared to be trying to hear what we were talking about.

So, this totally gave me a confidence boost. But I'm not really used to such gorgeous men making eyes at me like that. And I must say I like it! So I'm wondering just how much of an effect nice threads have on presentation. I didn't change anything except my clothes (and details around the edges).

Can the outfit really have that much of an effect?

You seem to have answered your own question.

Yes, absolutely. You've heard of dress for success? Believe it. Invest in it. Don't underestimate it.

Sharp casual versus the suit

Even with the pony tail, the suit pops.

IMO, nothing beats well-tailored, comfortable dress clothes for putting one's best foot forward. Good luck with the business.

Sounds like my sister's handsome free loader BF.

He described first meeting her like this:

"Nothing says this woman can support my lifestyle like a lady in a well tailored suit" Ballsy bastard.

Thanks buzz kill. You're wrong though.

I think a woman in a business suit is damn sexy. But I was a business major and soon to be MBA student, so I have some bias.

The outfit just gives off a vibe I love in a woman. Thought I prefer she wore a business skirt instead of pants.

That is a great outfit. Black and red -- my fave color combination for clothes.

How were all the other customers dressed? If you guys were in my neighborhood Starbucks you'd have stood out like sore thumbs because everyone is very casual. If you all had met at the coffee shop in a luxury hotel where everyone else was in a suit, it would have been interesting to see if the reaction would have been different.

More important than how you looked is did you close the deal?

Well, the guy who gave me the most attention was the only one in the joint giving my outfit a run for its money. I'm no expert, but his get-up looked a lot more expensive than mine!

I was going to wear a skirt, but the one I ordered was too big, so I had to send it back. Later this week, I'm going to Nordstrom to have a professional bra fitting and get one of their shopping assistants to help me pick out a bunch of stuff to try on. And yeah, since my legs are one (two) of my best features, my preferred outfit is a dress or skirt. :D

This was a nice coffee shop, and most people were dressed casual to business casual. The cute guy and I were definitely the best-dressed in the room.

Now I can't wait to try out more outfits and see what effects they have.

I'll admit, a woman in a powerful-looking business suit would be more intimidating than intriguing to me, because I would expect someone dressed like that to be kind of a ballbuster and I'm insecure with myself enough as it is.

I am not all men, though. I would imagine there are lots of guys out there that would react positively.

How did that not set off your Gaydar?

The bolded is a typo. It should read "Although I prefer she wore a business skirt instead of pants."

Might I add that a woman in a business suit gives off an aura that shes intelligent, strong, fiery, and confident. I just get the vibe that she'd be the kid of woman that Id really click with.

Oh, hell yes. I go to the same Starbucks several times per week.

Half the time I'm dressed like this:

The other half I'm dressed like this:

Ann Taylor - Tropical Wool Pickstitched Tuxedo Jacket

HUGE difference in attention. HUGE.

But of course. I view outfits as a chance to highlight your strongest physical attributes. One of the best forms of self expressioni. As you stated earlier, you have beautiful legs. So if I were you, I'd show those bad boys off. Why hide them?

In addition, a few studies have shown that men strongly associate the color red with passion. So, good call on the shirt color.

Yes, and what you described sounds yummy.

I personally don't like women in suits.

Posted

I'm somewhat biased because I am very attracted to confident, intelligent, conservatively dressed women that don't need to have half their bodies hanging out to look sexy, and they know they look sexy in either attire.

So that outfit kinda fits the bill for me If you have an average level of femininity (hair, makeup, jewelry - elegance). It makes a good impression in the least, is the appropriate dress for the occasion...and men are going to take you seriously and find you attractive.

I also prefer the pants to the skirt.

Personally I am with dusk on this... suits do nothing for me. I'll take a girl in jeans and teeshirt instead any day.

Well, I went to Nordstrom yesterday and dropped some serious cash on a whole new business wardrobe. It's ALL dresses and sexy pumps. Oh, and one HOT pencil skirt. I had no idea I could look so good in a dress. :D These are the nicest clothes I have ever owned.

I was kind of freaking out about how much money I dropped... but my business partner was totally understanding and supportive, and is now pushing me to get a professional photo shoot for our web site and promo materials because I'm "the face of the business".

And requests for meetings have started rolling in. I will show up to these next week and beyond looking like a million bucks. I'm hoping my male clients will be so distracted by my bod that they will happily sign large checks to me without even thinking about it.

I agree with your business partner. We need to see photos of you in your hot new clothes.

Looking like you know who you are and are good with it is always appealing. Being good looking to begin with helps big-time too. Sounds like you're on the verge of real success. Fair thee well.

I agree with pretty much everything except for the last part. A skirt is generally preferable (unless the lady in question has an unsightly pair of legs). A woman in a pantsuit looks like she's trying a little too hard to be a man for my taste.

pant suits don't look as good as a skirt if she's got a little junk in her trunk also.
