Would you cross a room at a social function to ask a woman how she is, just out of the kindness of your heart? Suppose you are under no obligation to at all, just happen to be at the same social function and have got talking to her a couple of times.

He'll cross, make small talk, offer a drink, so forth, eventually ask for a number or to "go somewhere else." It's never been just to make sure I'm not lonely. 3

If it is someone you know and especially if it's a small function, stopping by to say hi might be considered the polite/socially appropriate thing to do. If you are wondering if the guy in question is interested in you, it's impossible to tell based on the information provided. 1

Of course, most people are social creatures, it is also polite.

But if she was a stranger, not unless I was interested.
