After six or eight weeks, aim to practice twice a week, not less than once.

 

I'm 6 weeks in and I got twice a week ... mostly vinyasa. Good stuff. In a few more weeks I'll probably increase to 3 times / week.

Thanks for your response! Everyone needs to remember is that yoga is not only exercise, it is a philosophy and a psychology that stresses mindfulness and compassion to oneself and to others.

For these reasons I could go every day - for the physical part I need a few days in between. I have never worked out like this. Mostly long-distance running and/or weight training. This is totally differtent and I feel it all over my body. I don't want to push it.

You are indeed a prime candidate for yoga, and I speak as a busy, stressed out, working mother of two, whose yoga practice is the glue holding this leaky ship together (but not this leaky metaphor. I apologize). Since you have a two-part question, I'm going to give you a two-part answer.

Your yoga practice is very personal. Each person is working with his/her own mind, body, finances and schedules. People practice for different reasons too: some practice to lose weight, some to calm their mind, while others want to build greater strength or flexibility. The wonderful thing about yoga is that you can do it anywhere, with just yourself!

 

The tricky part is getting yourself to do it, to do it safely, and in a way that allows you to feel some sense of progress.

 

I think it’s important to attend classes when you can, so an instructor can do adjustments with you, to build your awareness of how you move, how to practice safely, and how to use your breathe in a pose. These are things you can work on at home too.

You can do restorative or hatha in the in-between days if you really want to practice every day, and just take it easy.

 

Or practice at home for half an hour.

 

Personally I find if I practise too often I get overly emotional so I just calm it down a bit. It's all about balance, adjustment and strength, including when you do and do not practice.
