I had been in limbo over the last two years deciding how long I should stay married (basically, "for the kids").

As I mentioned in another post, we were going to divorce a few years ago and then we were walloped by the economic downturn and our income was literally cut in half and our house became unsaleable. We even had to declare bankruptcy.

For the last two years, I've been making decent money but not great money. The problem was that we have no credit and operate all cash. I thought that I was not going to be able to get an apartment, or furniture, or all the stuff you need to set up a new household.

I felt stuck financially, emotionally, and relationship-wise. I even started seeing other women on the side in an effort to avoid this feeling of stagnation (not a wise strategy, I know).

So today, I decided that enough was enough. I took $100 that I had in cash and I actually got a bank account opened up in my name. I set up my direct deposit so that as to automatically divert my expense reimbursement checks (a few hundred $$ a month, mostly mileage) into this account.

Not only did it feel liberating, but the lady at the credit union said that she could refinance my car and that I qualified for a credit card with a decent limit.

I am looking at mediation services in our area. Finally moving forward . . .
