Lauriebell82 Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 If her weight is affecting her health negatively, AFAIK doctors are trained to address that. If they are dismissing the concern, that means that she does not need to lose weight and is already at a medically healthy weight. Either way, the input will be valuable. Your doctors could possibly have said that to you because you were already at a healthy weight and only wanted to lose for aesthetics, and so they wanted to discourage you from putting your health at risk by doing so. And rightly so, IMHO. Yeah, it depends on how overweight the OP is. The most I was ever overweight was like 30-40 pounds (a lot for me though, considering I'm 5'2), and the doctor told me to diet and exercise. I lost weight after that, but I had to figure out HOW to diet and exercise for my own body. So he didn't really "dismiss" the concern, he just didn't give me much guidance because I guess he felt I wasn't headed for obesity or anything, I was just overweight. I can identify with the OP though, it's very frustrating to struggle with weight because of a medication. It feels like it's not in your control.

Most medical doctors are surprisingly ignorant when it comes to diet and fitness. I had my own internist ask me how to lose "those last five pounds."

I actually NEVER had a doctor comment on my weight before, and at one time I was like 40 pounds overweight. I guess they just view it as vanity pounds unless your health is at risk.
moontiger Posted March 8, 2012 Posted March 8, 2012 (edited) I just looked at OP's profile; her last activity on this site was on March 2nd. It's likely she abandoned LS after reading some of the rather hurtful posts that were directed at her earlier in this thread, which is a shame as the majority of posts on here are kind, thoughtful, supportive, and offering helpful information. If she took anything away from this thread, I do hope that she realized that she doesn't need to stay in a real-life situation where she hears things that make her feel bad about herself, either.
