Just got laid off Valentines Day and I'm still a bit in shock and numb. I've already filed for unemployment and have been applying daily for other positions.

I need to find something ASAP, but am afraid I will have to settle for just about anything as I'm pretty desperate right now. I am also an introvert which makes it even more tough.

Any insight, advice, encouragement etc. is greatly appreciated!! I can't seem to get motivated as I'm in this depressed funk right now. :( Trying my damndest to snap out of it!

That sucks, Cora. I'm sorry to hear that.

Did they give anyone warning that layoffs were coming down the pipe? Years ago when one of my firms was dissolving, I had 3 months notice that we'd all be out of job. The market was so overpopulated back then that I was so thankful to have that much notice and time to look.

It sounds like you're going to need some income right away, so if I were you I'd take just about anything that paid more than what you'll get from unemployment. Plus, while future employers will forgive a break in work due to layoffs, they greatly prefer those with a work ethic who are willing to do what it takes to provide for themselves. Once you have some income coming in, you'll be able to narrow your focus to what you really want to do.

This is just a minor setback, one that soooooo many people go through. Just be careful with your spending, and start flooding the market with applications and resumes.

Well, we had warning if we read between the lines. They were never really completely honest with us. Things were always kind of iffy when new management took over.

Within the last month the work began to slow down drastically. Just last year we had more work than we could keep up with. We kept being told what a good job we were doing and how proud of us they were that we got the company caught up. Since the work had slowed, we were told they would only cut our hours back to 35 a week if need be. That we would not have to worry about lay-offs. We were constantly assured of that and that it would only be used as a last resort.

The next thing we knew, our manager who we very rarely see, drove down to our office in a rush on Tuesday, divided us into two rooms...spoke to the other room first and then came into our room and told us that they were laying off four people and we were the chosen four. She told us we'd be payed through the next day, but not to bother coming to work...to go ahead and clean out our desks and not to take it personally. That was it. We were speechless and blown away.

Not even two months ago we were given our evaluations and got raises....I was told I was doing a good job and now this. I just don't understand why they could not be truthful with us? I get that they probably didn't want to lose us until they were ready and that's probably why they were not honest with us. Or maybe they did not know themselves which I find kind of hard to believe.

Anyway, I have been applying for jobs within the past year regardless as that company has never really had my trust. Always something fishy going on.

Thank you so much for the advice! I will continue my job search and apply for anything I can.

It usually takes about a month for a layoff to get out of your system, That's why most people don't start job search right away because the shock hasn't wore off yet. So after a month, you accept that your old job is gone and you will then be able to move on to your next job. So I will say give it until Mid-March and by that time you will have your first FULL unemployment check and you then can start your job search.
