Am I the only guy who still takes his woman to movies?

I'm not just talking about on first dates. I mean at all. Are there any dudes who still go to movies with their chicks? I talk to alotta guys and they all seem to sit at home and watch movies with their women on DVD and bluray.

I love going to movie theaters. I went an average of 6 times per month last year. I like to take women whenever I go too. I know it's expensive $10 in the States (theaters in Sydney, Australia ripped me off by charging $22 for a ticket...what the hell?) but I'm addicted to movie theaters.

I like to watch movies from every country. As long as the cinematography is good, I'll watch virtually anything mainstream or indie (but no 3D...I hate that junk).

My only problem is some movies are just craptastic. M. Night Shymalan is the junk. That "I see dead people" movie was overrated garbage. But he made worse. Like that "Signs" movie with Mad Max and Joaquin Phoenix. The two dudes spent half the movie cowering in their basement because they were afraid of some aliens. Then it turns out the aliens can be killed by water. So all you have to die is whip out your balls and piss on the aliens and they die. How dumb is that?

Unbreakable was stupid too. It was about Bruce Willis who had the power to see into people's future and gained superstrength by groping on people. But his worse was "the Happening". The main antagonist of that movie was grass. That's right. Everybody was killing themselves and living in fear of grass. So why didn't they just mow their lawn? They don't need an electric mower. All they need is one of those old-fashioned push mowers and the main villain of the movie is killed instantly.

But one of the most craptastic Hollywood movies I ever watched on the big screen was Cameron Diaz's "The Box". Originally, there were around 200 people in the cinema watching this with me. Halfway past the movie I noticed there were around 50 people. This movie was garbage. I'd carry a bunch of sick vietnamese orphaned children on my head and shoulders through a sweltering rain forrest, as they pissed down my back, before I sit down and watched that abomination ever again.

Still, movie theaters can be fun. The movie-watching atmosphere is intense when the theater is laid out right. I like taking cute chicks because when the movie is funny, suspenseful, romantic, and scary they like to snuggle close to me in a way that's different than watching movies at home.

But it seems like I'm the only dude who still goes to theaters with their woman. Why is that? Too expensive? Too many distractions (i.e. cell phone talkers and crying babies)? Sound too loud or too low? Too many crappy movies?

The problem with movies, especially on the first date, is that you aren't interacting with the other person. You may as well both be in different theaters.

I finally had the chance to start going to the movies again here and there, last year, and I went for the first time this year, on Sunday.

The best movie I saw in the theatre, last year, was Super 8. Everyone there seemed to love the kids, and when the movie they were filming was shown during the credits, those who had started to leave, came back to watch it (and enjoyed it). :)

I was with family, though.

They don't release good movies anymore and everything is so damn expensive. I saw a movie a few weeks ago and the snacks for one person cost almost more than three movie tickets. I do admit that when I go with my wife she sneaks as much stuff as possible in her purse and we have never been caught.

No, you aren't. I often take your woman to the movies, too. Your momma, too.

I sneaked in bottled water, and a bar of chocolate, and should have bought my own nachos and cheese dip, before I went into the theatre, the other night. They handed me warmed up cheese dip, and a small bag of nachos, and charged almost $7. A real cheek.

I saw that as well. The nachos are still in the bag. We sneak in candy and sometimes drinks. We can't sneak in popcorn or hot dogs though. The hot dogs are five bucks as well. I can get a whole pack and some rolls for that much at the supermarket.

As a woman who LOVES going to the movie theater, yeah less and less guys are down to go. It's always a disappointment when that happens. I guess sitting on the couch at home is much cheaper plus it's a lot easier to have sex on your couch than it is at the movie theater ;)

If you want a guy to go to the movie just bring a purse big enough to fit both of your stuff. We have done it tons of times and never got caught.

I'm a big movie goer. I haven't gone as much since moving from NY to VA at the beginning of 2010 because there is just two or three 18-plex theaters in reasonable driving distance and they tend to favor the big block buster movies with all the CGI which I don't support, whereas in NY and Long Island you could go to a lot of private indy theaters that show indy films. I would definitely like to take my g/f to a movie once a week if I could and support the people trying to make good movies (movies without the legions of fighting dragons or w/e or slow motion warriors swinging swords at each other as if there's no end of fascination with that. One such movie I saw last year (alone unfortunately) was the docudrama with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts which dramatized the Joe Wilson, Valery Plame story (called "Fair Game") and the dirty politics of Dick Cheney, Scooter Libby and that idiot, G.W. Bush. Movies like that need my patronage and I'd love to have a female counterpart who is up to enjoying and getting something out of a picture like that. I'm sure I've found one but we still have this geography problem to work out. I saw "Contraband" last week with my mother and "Tinker, Taylor, Soldier, Spy with my brother". I don't see going out to the movies dying off as a night out for a couple--a movie and at least a snack if not dinner is nice living.

i'm a film aesthete, and often times i'll date a girl with a similar appreciation. so no you're not the only one. i don't see what the big deal is really; obviously you're not there to interview each other whilst the film is playing, but movies do make for cool banter when you hang out afterwards (which is where the date's milk and cookies are !). especially the smarter, though-provoking varieties that aren't titled "underworld: awakening"

I'm a huge movie buff! I go see everything out. Most of my dates are movie dates. So much fun.

I also stuff my purse full of candy and other drinks. I've snuck in hot dogs, too! My dates have appreciated it as I pulled one thing after another out of my purse just like the circus car full of people.

Find another movie fan. Then you will have something to talk about after the movie. I enjoy dissecting and discussing them!

I agree with the stuff about sneaking in food. I do that all the time. Usually it's burritos.

I also agree it's fun to talk about the movie afterward. When I see a movie I hate and my date likes it, it really gets a good conversation going.

P.S. I saw Contraband with Mark Walhberg too. Predictable with plot holes. I gave it 2 outta 3 stars. Fair.

As an avid movie fan, I love going to the movie theater on dates! Give me a good horror film, a bucket of buttery popcorn, and a huge diet Coke and I'm set :D Best part about it? Snuggling into my guy's shoulder and having his arm wrap protectively around me when I jump during the scary parts

I can totally picture this video: starts with candy and hotdogs, then escalates to giant bucket of popcorn, a comfy chair, the kitchen sink. For the finale, you pull out a car and drive off!

Yummmmm!! Movie theater popcorn and diet coke are two of my favorite things!!! I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I'd rather go to a kids movie in a theater and watch an adult movie at home in my PJ's.

My boyfriend and I go to the movies together all the time. Over the past few months there have been a lot of movies out we've been interested in seeing, so we've been going around once a week. We have similar tastes and enjoy sharing our opinions with each other afterward.

I don't think a movie is really the ideal "first" (or even second or third) date because you don't really get to talk or get to know each other. But beyond that, I enjoy going to the movies with my BF.

We used to go to movies all the time, mostly either thoughtful indie films, black comedies, or sci fi. Now we have kids, and it's harder, most of the time we do just watch movies at home. One of us might take the older one to see something, but the other one has to stay home with the little guy. We only get out for an actual movie date once in a great while, so we always go for the stuff where the big screen special effects matter. It's a lot of fun, though, the whole experience, probably more so since we don't get to do it just whenever we want. Leaning together in the dark, eating popcorn, getting lost in the surround sound and the virtual experience.

Well, I should certainly hope you'd save that kind of viewing for at home!

Sorry, couldn't resist. :o

OOOOH..,.,.that does sound kind of bad, doesn't it? HAHA!! I meant that I'm SO NOT a movie buff that the only movies I like to see in a theater are kid's movies because I like the look on my daughter's face as she watches them.

THOSE movies that you speak of.........well, we'll just save that for a different thread ;)

Movie theaters are too damn cold. Even with my BF to warm up on. Plus, I always have to pee halfway through, and it can't be paused! And those chairs are uncomfy. I prefer to cuddle up at home to a movie once it's on dvd. :)

3d movies give me a head ache. Plus its so nice to just watch a movie at home. I even have a popcorn maker!

I'd rather take a girl on a long drive then the movies.

Posted

I haven't taken a girl to the movies in a damn long time.

Still I go semi-regularly by myself and catch the bargain early bird showing. I never buy snacks, foods or drinks. That's actually where the theaters get all their profit from.

Not much good stuff out there recently but I can't wait for The Avengers.

My exW and I would, usually sneaking in some food and drink and catching first runs after the initial buzz was over so the movie theater wasn't packed. We'd even do it when we traveled, both here in the states and overseas. I also took my dates since D to at least one movie. We'd usually have dinner first so plenty of 'talk time' then. Sometimes, 'quiet time' is healthy too.

Back in the day, the drive-in was make-out central and a cheap date. Sadly, they're all gone in our area now for many years. I miss those.

Well, if a couple is living together, chances are they'll be watching DVDs a lot more than going to movie theatres, since you really can't go to theatres everyday. Besides, with DVDs, you can eat whatever you want, pause whenever you want, snuggle in with each other, and it's nearly free! That being said, we do go to theatres about 1-2 times a month. If we're going for a night out that involves some cash though, we'd prefer other things (orchestra, events, dinners/drinks) to movies.
