USMCHokie Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 ...is terribly depressing... After being spoiled by the sheer numbers for online dating in the DC area, I have moved to the sticks of California and now understand how tough it is for those in more rural or non-metropolitan areas. OKC has only about a handful of women that are actually active near my area, none of whom are particularly desirable. POF is...well, POF... And right now, I'm considering trying out Match again, but I'm not sure if I want to pay for a service that has a very limited pool of women. For those who have lived in the sticks, what do you do for dating, whether online or IRL...?
carhill Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Victorville and Palm Springs have airports. Get familiar with them
Author USMCHokie Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 Victorville and Palm Springs have airports. Get familiar with them Hmmm, great...that sounds incredibly promising...
carhill Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Another option for more casual hookups is all the tourists in the Palm Springs/Desert Springs areas, as well as the desert riding camps (ATV's, motorcycles, etc). If you like to dirt bike/ATV, this is the time of the year when it's popular there.
ditzchic Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Yes, dating in the sticks is tough. I suggest making friends in the neighboring cities and visiting them as often as possible.
Star Gazer Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 PROMISE me you will not date anyone from Riverside, unless you want to date a meth head. I think you're just gonna have to drive a lot. Or date another Marine.

But I am considering getting a dirt bike... Yes, dating in the sticks is tough. I suggest making friends in the neighboring cities and visiting them as often as possible. I have a ton of friends on the San Diego area, but none in the LA area...I would like some friends in the LA area...
carhill Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Hey, if you're open for anything from 18 to 55, Twentynine Palms has 41 photo returns on Match. That's far better than my area, where there are only 19 within a ten mile radius. I think you'll do well
Author USMCHokie Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 PROMISE me you will not date anyone from Riverside, unless you want to date a meth head. Hahah, ok, I'll keep that in mind. I think you're just gonna have to drive a lot. Yea, it looks like it, which I don't mind at all. California seems like it has some good driving... Or date another Marine. Absolutely not. I have a strict no-DOD policy...
xpaperxcutx Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I thought i had it tough. One thing I notice about POF, i tend to get more messages from guys from Jersey, and most of them resemble the Situation. I am not " Snooki".
carhill Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I didn't even know Palm Springs got any tourists...I thought it was just the retired crowd...and gay men... Indian casinos, golf courses, timeshares. Lots of transients. When I was a kid, the rich kids I went to school with would go to PS and PD to their 'second homes' during the winter.

Hahah, I also thought I had it "tough" when I was back in DC...but it was more just laziness and not trying...now I wish I had the number of options I had before so I could get off my ass and meet women...and all I see are the desert version of Snooki...

Star Gazer Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 I didn't even know Palm Springs got any tourists... Are you serious? Yes, tons of tourists, especially now through June. I'm actually involved with the planning a convention for Palm Springs, but not until summer 2013. But as tourists, they won't be around to date longer than a weekend.
misssmartypants Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Dating online in rural areas sucks. I'm in southeast Kansas. Not only are the numbers lean but the quality of the people is depressing. Guys with no education. No jobs. No basic hygiene skills. The poverty rate here is so high that people just accept it as normal to live with parents or to depend on state aid. They don't even try. I have slightly better luck meeting people through friends. Slightly. The other issue is that in such a small community you are just expected to know everyone. Who's related. Who's important. No one tells you anything.

For those who have lived in the sticks, what do you do for dating, whether online or IRL...? I don’t live in the sticks, but it’s a smallish town. What do I do about dating? I rarely date; I’ll go on dates a couple times a year. Occasionally, I'll run across a single man my age. When I do, I go out with him. Since I don’t have the luxury of options, I’ll go on dates with pretty much anyone. I never know when an opportunity will present itself, so I take them when they're given. Yeah, it’s terribly depressing. Online dating in my town is even worse than IRL, so I don’t do it. Is there a larger city within a couple of hours of you? Are you willing to travel there to meet women?
Author USMCHokie Posted January 16, 2012 Author Posted January 16, 2012 Is there a larger city within a couple of hours of you? Are you willing to travel there to meet women? Yes, there are, the closest of which is Palm Springs. Then there's LA, San Diego and Vegas each a few hours away. And yes, I don't really see a choice in the matter, so I'm willing to travel...though I'm not sure I'd be particularly appealing if I tried online dating based on my location and distance from those urban areas...
Dust Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 You should look into shadowing somedude81 in some of his classes or college dancing club. You'd be younger then him and he's wanted a wing man.

I think you’ll be as appealing as anyone else, as long as you’re willing to be the one who travels for the first couple of dates. If a woman decides she really likes you, I don't think a few hours distance will that big of a deal. Don't give up on meeting someone IRL. Are there cool local hangouts in your town? You might get lucky and meet someone--either someone single, recently divorced, or new to the area.

Maybe we'll put the money togather to send you out to palm springs to get ravaged the marine!
Star Gazer Posted January 16, 2012 Posted January 16, 2012 Absolutely not. I have a strict no-DOD policy... Since when? Wasn't the girl you were really into before you left (the one now at Pendleton) a Marine??

For those who have lived in the sticks, what do you do for dating, whether online or IRL...? Oh Yeah! Rural areas are a challenge... that's what separates the boys from the men! Rural areas almost always have more men than women. Women don't tend to like rural areas... the biggest complaint I've heard is lack of shopping venues and nightlife activities. You can't really use online dating... you have to be ballsy, brave, and ready to hit on lot's of women who are taken.
