So, what is everyone's view on a break vs a break up? Does a break happen when one partner needs space, time to get over hurt, etc.? Do couples actually get back together after breaks?

Just any thoughts on the difference of a break and break up, and stories surrounding them. Thank you.

In my opinion there is no point having a "break". If your relationship has got to the point where one of you feels the need for a "break" then it is most likely over. If there is any relationship left to save then you can save it with good communication, not by spending time apart. Asking for a break is just a wuss way of dumping someone.

Seriously folks. When someone tells you they want a break they are pretty much breaking up with you. This person is straight out telling you that THEY DON'T WANT to be with you. Why would you want to stick around when this other person is doing gosh knows what during this "break". A break and a breakup are seemingly the same thing. If someone wants to leave, show em the door!

(I'm not neccesarily saying you are doing this, this is just me speaking out loud)

They are the same thing.

Break up = dumper has the balls to end it... :)

Break = dumper has no balls and doesn't want the dumpee to hate him/her, so dumper leaves that hope of reconciliation with dumpee...

when they say they want to go on a break, 9 times outta 10 there is someone else. they want to run off to this other person and see if they like them better than you. if they like you better they'll come back cuz "it was only a break." but if they like the other person better she/he is gone.

Yeah, a "break" is usually just a "break-up" with training wheels.

To me a break is most likely two situations, one being there is someone else and they wanna keep you as a back up plan. Two, they want to break up with you but they're cowardly or just indecisive about it.

Both situations should be treated as a normal break up.

break = breakup.

the only time a "break" is something rational would be saying "we should spend 24 hours to calm down and distance ourselves from this with no communication and then meet up at xx:PM tomorrow to discuss this again from a rested perspective".

that's not a break though.

as everyone says, "we should take a break" means "i want to breakup with you".
