You can't determine looks just by the number on the scale.

I am very short, 5'2" and weigh 130-135, but I am not fat and am a size 6. The reason is because I work out, and have a lot of muscle. I do a lot of squats. So the poster that is 5'7" and 155 and works out 5 times a week, is probably perfect. She could be 155 lbs of muscle, not flab.

My husband says I am built just like former WWE wrestler Mickie James. Short and thick but still in shape. Not thin, but not fat either.

As a guy I'm baffled by some women and the misplaced effort they put into being attractive. Adding 10 minutes a day for a jog around the community would be infinitely more productive for appearance than 10 minutes a day grooming. Also better for health. The same for guys. I can't grow any taller but I can choose not pick up the beer can, go to the gym and keep myself trim and muscular.

This is true unfortunately. I'm saying 'unfortunately' because they also get frustrated by lack of appreciation from the opposite sex.

I wouldn't describe Beyonce or Kim Kardashian as 'curvy', they are slim with wide hips.

Curvy would be someone like Nigella Lawson before she lost weight, who I think is incredibly sexy.

Bathroom scales are not expensive. Go to Bed Bath & Beyond and buy some when you get one of their 20% off coupons. Buy a tape measure at a fabric store. No need for guesswork. Weight and dress size are irrelevant. Take measurements and go by that. People with the same measurements will not weigh the same.

The rule of thumb for perfect weight, which doctors, the airlines (for hiring purposes) and insurance companies used to use was women who were 5'0" should weight 100 lbs. Every inch taller was an extra 5 lbs. If you are 5'5" 125 lbs. is considered optimal. I am 5'8" but 140 lbs. is too fat for me so my weight fluctuates between 126 and 130. I look and feel better at that weight. I am a slim hourglass who works out with weights.

We are so used to obesity that those rules sound positively anorectic to most people. If some people want to be heavier or thinner, why should I care? Do what you want with your own body.

Now someone will bring up the Marilyn Monroe fallacy that she was a size 16. But she wasn't...nor was she fat by any means. And the sizes back then were not the same as today.

Sizes of clothes have changed as our society has fattened up. ;)

"There has been much debate about Marilyn Monroe's vital statistics. She possessed one of the most celebrated bodies in the world and the ludicrous rumours, hyperbole and aura of enigma that surrounded her image were all part of the Marilyn machine. They certainly contributed to the extraordinary level of fame she had acquired by the time she was found naked and dead in bed on August 5, 1962, at just 36 years old.

After all these years, mystery and conspiracy theories still surround her death, but when it comes to her physical attributes, I can put a few facts straight. Contrary to received wisdom, she was not a voluptuous size 16 -- quite the opposite. While she was undeniably voluptuous -- in possession of an ample bosom and a bottom that would look at home gyrating in a J-Lo video -- for most of the early part of her career, she was a size 8 and even in her plumper stages, was no more than a 10"

This works pretty well, although every individual needs to adjust an average guide like this down for their body type--i.e. if you have a large or small bone density, meaty thighs/calves/arms/hips/butt, larger boobs, etc, you add or subtract those from your ideal. Any of the zillion BMI calculators available out there aren't bad either if you similarly adjust up or down for the particular body features you have that you can't change via diet or exercise.

Excellent points.

Just to 'pour it on'. There is also the myth that one is entitled to gain weight with age. This is often used as an excuse to ignore a thickening waste line.

Yes, perhaps the metabolism slows but that's just more reason to eat a few less bites of potato or a half slice less of toast.

I'm 52 and still wear the same size 30" jeans i did at 25. My gal might be 120 lbs or so. She's had two kids and gone through 'the change'.

So, yes, each to their own but one is fooling oneself that one is fit by comparing to those around us. The 'curve' (excuse the pun) of what's average has gone up with most people's weight going up with it.

Yeah this. I am 5'5 and 128lbs, I am also an athletic build (although for the life of me have always been a stick so I am strong but don't look like it as many fat girls claim to be)

But holy hell what I would give to just sit & eat a bowl of pasta and 5 drinks like I used to everynight. Isn't going to happen anymore at my age (not old at all, 30, but not 20 either!!) plus having popped out a 10lb baby less than 18 months ago.

I wish I wish.... it was just 1/2 a piece of toast less, LOL

I sprint quite a lot, meaning about 30 minutes of it at least 3 times a week as part of my training for a bleep test in May.

Emilia,

How do you do the sprints? How does that work?

I've been looking for an alternative to the one hour walks that take a long time of your day and are not that effective for losing weight.

As far as the topic, I've found that men blue collar types seem to prefer curvy voluptuous women more, while the scientists go for slim hips, flat chested skinny types.

I think it's funny how people assume 155= I need to do something to lose weight and am not knowledgable about it. I actually don't consider myself overfat. I've got a lot of muscle I have spent hours in the gym building, my stomach is pretty flat, and I get a lot of compliments on my body. I am actually proud of how much I weigh. No one would ever guess.

I think pretty much all men like curves--full, shapely breasts, trim waist and voluptuous hips/bum. But there are very few women who truly fit the hourglass mold.

Some men prefer fat women. I know several men who have dated fat/chubby women and would continually pick them over slender women.

Yes some men do prefer fat women. But from the way you described curvy the hour glass mold I bet you fit it just right! I hate that all these fat women who's curviest body part is their stomach use it as a description though!

But to the OP yes guys are attracted to bigger girls! Not that you are necesarily a bigger girl because women often are not objective when looking at themselves.

I don't find larger girls more attractive but I think it comes down to health. You can tell the difference between an overweight person who lives a healthy lifestyle vs. someone who sits around all day.

You might be right about the belly thing. My flat tummy is something boyfriends have always complimented me on. Didn't seem like a big deal to me or that it looked great, just flat...like my chest...ha ha

I've never understood why girls worry about the size of their breasts. Most of the girls I've been in serious relationships with had very small chests, which, for some reason, I really like. Brain, stomach, and legs. All that matters.

Yeah I have found this to be true in my case.

Too bad I prefer scientist types :/

If the OP is getting dates, then obviously those men like her body type. If not, then the answer is again obvious.

Seconded.

I think that many women worry about their weight and chest size in the same manner that men worry about their height (and for some, what's south of the waistline). The difference being that I've noticed that women have the greater tendency to internalize the insecurities about their bodies.

We all have our arbitrary criteria; I don't care if a guy is shorter than me (I'm 5'10"), but I'm not into overly muscular or stocky men.

Well for men, of those two things, only one is visible to the outside public, for women, both of those are comparable in public

if its a taller girl I can go 15 to 20 lbs over...thats my limit

Im a butt man. It also really depends how she carries it. If she's excessively thick, they had better have a small waist and thin face. Its all in the genes.

This is my perfect body type:

I am just curious if men are attracted to bigger girls. Im not talking about morbidly obese ..im talking about women who are curvy with a few extra pounds.

I would like to hear some views from the dudes on this topic. details ppl

Miss Faith,

I cannot stress enough that the very best thing you can do for your social life is to stay in your position on the social playing field. Don't let yourself believe that somebody ELSE has it better, for their being in a different spot on the field.

If everybody chased after the ball no matter where it was hit, eventually the entire team would end up in the same spot on the field and the whole rest of the field would be vulnerable to the next social batter.

So employ your wardrobe, and your personality so as to make yourself (at least SEEM) content no matter who or where you are.

I think that to ask such a question only lets you build up reasons to put-off making yourself vulnerable to other people (... unTIL you change this or that, etc).

Seeming confidence and poise will do wonders for you, and that goes double for anyone perfectly willing to stay in their own position while patiently awaiting "Mr. Right" coming your way... rather than flocking toward the last spot to which the ball was hit, with the masses.

Hope this makes sense.

I dont mind a woman that's a little bit thick but she has to wear it well. I prefer if her hips were big and her thighs meaty, that they accompany a nice trimmed waistline with a flat stomach. It's rare but a nice catch. :D

What we have here is a bunch of guys (and women) who love women and their bodies!

Women are like flowers. We are all different, and we are all beautiful.

We attract the guy who wants what we've got.

I've always been very small, slender but curvy. Small boobs but a shapely body and booty. It's surprising to me when guys say they love my chest, but I attract the guys who like a smaller set, and guys who like the whole package. Wouldn't want it any other way. I want someone who wants me, and vice versa.

It's fun to ask your partner what body part they like the most on you. My last boyfriend loved my shoulders and back. I liked the back of his neck and the back of his head between his ears. So sexy....

I guess it's a simple matter of appreciation for the woman or man giving themselves to you....

FitChick: Yet again, your statements about this sort of thing are totally bunk. A person's frame affects what their "ideal" weight should be based on height (and this is for life insurance and medical purposes). For someone who's 5'4" as I am, the range is 114-127 on a small frame, to 134-151 on a large frame. That's a range of 37 pounds for someone who's 5'4''.

And if you use BMI, someone who's 5'9'' has a "normal" weight range of 125 lbs to 168 lbs, which is a 43 pound range. That's by CDC guidelines.

In other words, it's not as simple as saying 5 lbs for each inch over 5 feet tall. Using your standard, Jillian Michaels is 10 pounds overweight... which she obviously is not.

5'7 and 155lbs can look good or fat, depending on the shape and muscle mass.

Yup, as can many other height/weight combos.

My own trainer estimated I was 20 pounds lighter before I got on the scale.

I quite literally stay the same exact weight (+/- 2 pounds depending on water retention from my monthly cycle), but will get physically larger or smaller depending on diet and exercise and how both affect my body composition (muscle versus fat). My BFF is physically bigger than me, but weighs a good 15 pounds less right now. For this reason, I care very little about what the scale says, and instead rely upon a tape measure and a quarterly body fat test in a bodpod or dunk tank.

Here is a perfect example of how someone can be very close in physical size at very different weights, weighing more as she gets fitter.

This is also why I kinda laugh and cringe when guys (especially those on LS) make judgments about women based on their stated weight. It's only one piece of the puzzle.
