Overthirtymale Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 I know this is kind of off topic but it seems texting and dating go hand in hand. I am one of those guys who got a cell phone long before smart phones came into play. Sure my phone does text but it looks really dated the only reason why I keep it is I have an old phone plan that is really cheap compared to today's rates. My cell phone is a dinosaur out of date and bulky. I am afraid if I pull out my phone asking for number the women of today would laugh at it. (insecure I know). I usually don't pull out my phone.

Nothing wrong with an old clunky cell phone...if a woman is gonna laugh at it (meanly), she isnt worth dating. Not to mention you can use it to make her laugh. Make fun of the cell phone yourself and joke about the ancient piece of technology you have
jerbear Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 There are old school people who do not have cell phones and refuse to get one. The one I know are now married with kids and he GOT a smart phone but uses it for just a phone. Plus he runs the battery down and "forgets" to recharge. So you can always get a smart phone but don't use the smart part of it. It certainly helps when your dates have a smart phone and their prospects have smart phones. Depending on your overall presentation, the cell phone is just part of the presentation. Not having something that every over 30 guy has does make you dated and behind the times. Heck, I have seen grandma aged women using Siri on their iPhones; installing apps, using yelp, checked in in foursquare, and playing angry birds.
ditzchic Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 It depends on the kind of girl you want to date. Personally, I'm a bit of a tech nerd so if a guy had a bunch of out of date gadgets or no gadgets at all it would make me question how much we have in common. But it wouldn't be a total deal breaker if he made up for it in other areas.

Really? I guess it would depend on the woman. I personally think it's stupid to spend hundreds of dollars on a phone and I hate to hear people go on and on about what their dumb phone can do. I can care less unless you start talking about it having the ability to pay one of my bills! As long as my phone allows me to text, make a phone call and take pictures I'm fine. I would say maybe update your phone but don't get the most expensive one if it makes you feel more confident.
bean1 Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Overthirtymale, if your username is accurate, why not disregard the texting bull**** and call the girl instead. I think any of us over 25 will appreciate it (I'm guessing 18-20 year olds don't know much about phone calls anymore). That's a good way to stand out amongst the crowd. What I *loved* about my husband when I first met him was that he phoned me instead of texted. I never bothered responding to the mere texts of other men trying for a date (it was my first week OLD and I had a few lined up...). I went with the man who bothered to call me and never looked back.
El Brujo Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Some of us actually WORK during the day and can't pick up the phone and talk right then and there. Besides, how am I even going to hear the thing when I'm running my board planer or my table saw? Communication is communication. The rest of you should be mature enough to realize after you've met the person, it shouldn't matter if they're calling you, texting you, or writing notes and folding them into paper airplanes to throw at you. If you don't like communicating with someone, why even bother with them?

Good point! The guy I went out with yesterday texted me when he first got my number (met him online) but he called me the next day and asked me out. Met him online Wednesday night, called me Thursday night, lunch on Friday afternoon. Love it!

DearAbby Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 If I saw your phone, there is no way I could date you because it would be obvious we have nothing in common LOL. I know it's sad, but it's true. I am really into being up on technology and I think the phone says something about the person's overall presentation and even their attitude on life in general. It's kind of like a person's car. If your car was old, clunky and beat up, it says something about you.

Pizzaman81 Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Wow, just wow. This almost takes the cake over the other girl I was talking to about not wanting to hang out with ugly people.
ShannonMI Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 Wow, just wow. This almost takes the cake over the other girl I was talking to about not wanting to hang out with ugly people. Right? Hahahahahaha I can't imagine dismissing someone because of a cell phone. I went out on a date recently with a young 20 something guy and he had an old phone. I joked with him about it, but it wasn't like I was thinking "ugh what a loser!!!" He was young but he actually had a very good job. Just because a person doesn't have a $500 Iphone doesn't mean they are a dirtbag.

Bahahahaha...true...I only have a $199 iPhone...I was smart and waited until my contract ran out so I could get the big discount. That must mean I'm a dirtbag to some women if I didn't spend $500 on my iPhone though...oh well. Oh dear I didn't spend $500 on my smartphone oh my God I'm never gonna have a woman ever (end intense sarcasm). Wait...where was I?

Hahahahaha well it doesn't matter HOW MUCH you paid for the damn thing, as long as you have one, you'll be golden in some women's eyes. I'm not like that. I couldn't care less about that type of sh*t. It's a f*cking cell phone. There are more important things to value and judge people on.

It's amazing what some women will judge others on nowadays. Yeesh!

Can't you pull out the SIM-card and put it in a new phone? Or is it one of those REALLY old phones without a SIM-card? Perhaps you can ask your carrier to create a SIM-card for you, based on your old number and with your old plan, so that you can put the card in a newer phone. Just and idea. If you go for a new phone and you suspect you'll be texting a lot, then go for a phone with a keyboard, like a Blackberry, Motorola's Android phone or an HTC with keyboard. I'd say just ask your carrier what the possibilities are. (call their support)

Shannon why are you confused? It's simple so let me break it down to you: If you meet a great guy who is attractive, really into you, wouldn't verbally or physically abuse you, takes you on fun dates and makes you laugh but has an outdated phone DROP HIM IMMEDIATELY!! I mean come on! We all have our deal breakers and at the end of the day it's all about the phone woman! No but for real I guess we all have our "things" and I really try to understand where people are coming from, but I just never thought it would be a phone! A phone?!?! I thought the OP was being insecure but to know it's actually true is just like....I'm gonna need a moment to process. lol

They have good phones too. I have one that looks like a Blackberry. It has the full keyboard, so texting is very easy. The phone was like $120 or something. Not bad at all. OP, if you are really concerned about impressing women and are worried your clunker of a phone will turn them off, then look into Verizon Straight Talk. Go to your local Walmart and look at the phones. It's a cheap option.

I disagree 100% Even though I have a smart phone, I don't look down on anyone who does not. While texting and keeping track on FB can be cute in the beginning, I prefer verbal communication after dating for a while. And, it's actually somewhat of a turn on to know that someone can be happy without needing to be connected to a phone all the time. That's the kind of guy that'll go hiking with me and not care about 'tagging' himself everywhere

I know how to operate smart phones and what their capabilities are. By owning one would that not give an impression that I am a geek and not afraid to use tech devices. Which I am. And carrying an older phone would give an impression that I either: don't know anything about smart phones, or cannot afford to own one.
carhill Posted December 24, 2011 Posted December 24, 2011 I remember, back in 2003 when the first Blackberry was seen around these parts, a nickname of 'crackBerry', alluding to the opioid product also commonly seen around here, sprang up. It turns out that humorous addictive slang name has proven to be true for the millions of smart phones which have succeeded it. It's hard to have a normal conversation anymore with people having one eye on their phone all the time. Thanks, but I'll pass (on both the phone and those who 'require' it. They can pry my venerable 385 Motorola, the keys to my clunker 47yo car and the trigger finger off my WW2 issue Beretta from my cold dead hands.
