Ruby Slippers Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 For your information, Wolfie, I adore Steve Buscemi. And even though a lot of people think he's funny-looking, I think he's HOT because he's so smart and amazing. I would prefer to get naked with him over 90% of the actors on True Blood. And Clockwork Orange was one of my favorite movies in high school, and I watched it and read the book dozens of times. I even got a bunch of my friends (guys and gals) to dress up like the gang for Halloween. And my mom and I loved The Lost Boys. I still get creeped out when I see that movie -- it's been a while, but it's still creepy! I think it's funny that men get their panties all in a twist because a crazy popular TV show has a butt-kicking female lead and plays to women in some ways. When I was a kid, girls had heroes like Wonder Woman and Shera to inspire us. Sure, they were badasses -- but they had to be wearing a shiny metallic bathing suit to do it.
oaks Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 Sure, they were badasses -- but they had to be wearing a shiny metallic bathing suit to do it. I mourn the passing of the metallic bathing suit. TV has really gone downhill since the '70s.
serial muse Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I adored the Lost Boys...but let's face it, that movie had its emo moments, too, most of them involving Jason Patric. "What's happening to me, Starrrr?" Kiefer Sutherland kicked ass, though. And the grandpa was awesome. (Never seen an episode of True Blood.)
Negative Nancy Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I don't watch True Blood (too obviously trying to profit from all the twilight hype) or any other vampire stuff for that matter and I only know of James "Deen" () cos he gave an interview on the good men's project site, but I agree with Ruby that it's ironic how men can talk **** about women's shows, yet they all drool over Megan Fox in Transformers - which in essence is exactly the same - just an action show geared towards men.
ThaWholigan Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I agree. The Lost Boys isn't even some Stallone anti-woman movie either, it has elements that can appeal to both sexes. Ditto for other movies like Heathers, which some might consider a chick flick but it's certainly not. Now everythings geared specifically towards women. The few non-action movies they gear towards men are nauseating judd apatow nerdism where the main characters are all penis-fixated germophobic freaks instead of like the simple boys who love each other in the Outsiders or the hell raising Drooges from A Clockwork Orange. I agree actually, even though I like the Judd Apatow movies. There isn't much variety in the kind of movies & tv shows that get promoted towards the male market. The Inbetweeners and Pete vs Life are probably the only two I can think of on British TV right now. I don't mind True Blood as much as everyone else though, it's a watchable show, but not the kind of thing I will miss other programs to watch (no way lol). I'd rather watch Shameless . The quality of movies has changed though, but I think that's a studios/production issue. That can change if there are enough people committed.

Is it bad that I watch porn but have no idea who James Deen is?? Anyway, I deliberately avoided the Transformers movie and (shock horror), I don't think Megan Fox is that hot. She's like a slightly better looking version of Stacey Slater from Eastenders .
Author Wolf18 Posted December 20, 2011 Author Posted December 20, 2011 Many men indeed think Megan Fox is hot (not that I do), but all agree with me when I say "what a terrible actress, should've just gone for a porn career". Women on the other hand, try to attribute talent, intelligence, or charisma to every pretty man bulked up dude they see. When I was making fun of transformers and its 40 year old followers, it was ironically women who were the biggest fans (and I got a "warning"). Only famous women I can think of as attractive are these: http://www.dreadcentral.com/img/news/oct11/TheThingA.jpg http://www.celebszz.com/8318-2/alison-lohman-21.jpg http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/8759/susanhoeckeportrait2009i.jpg They don't have massive, DD tits or exagerated bubble asses. IME, most males are quite fond of the girl next door. Including the "successful" guys who come from the rich part of town and steal the girls next door from me
PlumPrincess Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 LOL Ruby Slippers wouldn't watch True Blood if it was Steve Buscemi (whose actually an amazing actor) and Dan Akroyd (he sucks but he's ugly and I want to make a point) were shirtless and ****ing everything that walks. Even if the guys weren't as ugly as that, but just 2 normal "boys next door" sans the 8 pack or CGI biceps who were running around brutally raping women, that show would've been off the air after the first episode. So what? Do men watch porn because the women are Harvard material? By the way, what about Game of Thrones? Is that also porn? I find it in regards to nudity worse. And the women are absolutely boring. They are all tall with big boobs and standard pretty features. It's probably ok though, because you have a bunch of men killing each other all the time. And the nerds and geeks approve of it, so it can't be bad.

Well I was addressing the people claiming that true blood WAS harvard material. Cute straw man though. I haven't seen Game Of Thrones but from the trailer it looks way more interesting than the myriad of vampire soap operas coming out these days. I don't watch movies or TV shows (I don't watch tv shows period anymore) to see sexually attractive women , and most men don't either. That's what porn is for. Or real life women. I prefer my movies and TV shows to have little to no female characters, whenever a woman enters the scene the movie tends to just slow down into yawn inducing romantic BS (don't believe me? Pay attention next time you're at a film).

It has some interesting things to say about human nature and the search for power, and I'm a sucker for medieval LOTR stuff. ... But the way it throws in random nude scenes is purely for the HBO audience, I'll admit. The books had their share of sex scenes, but no where near on the level of the show. (Unless I missed the chapter where Littlefinger waxed philosophically about his love/need for power while Martin described two whores-not a sex negative term, they are literally whores-went at it in the background.)

No, I like True Blood and Game of Thrones. I just wanted to point out that the guys here will probably say that Game of Thrones is acceptable despite having more nudity and violence in it. I remember that scene and it's exactly what I was thinking about. They just throw in sex scenes that don't contribute to the story AT ALL.

I saw an interview with him once and didn't really care too much about him until I saw the show.

Have to admit...I only read the first book, and while I like me some sex, I actually thought there was a lot of gratuitous sex stuff in the book that didn't advance the story and just seemed there for titillation's sake. So it doesn't surprise me it's in the TV adaptation too; seems consistent with the writer's aesthetic, at least.

And the nerds and geeks approve of it, so it can't be bad. Game of Thrones is good, and Boardwalk Empire is great (some of the history is off, but then they tie into other aspects of the era quite well). Like TB, the sex is just tossed in for the scenery. There are some films with more of a stereotypical male focus that I love (Bullitt, the Man with no name trilogy, Taxi Driver) but to deny that most entertainment doesn't have some elements of camp, sexual or not, regardless of what demographic it's geared towards, is rather silly. Scarface is another good film about some of the escorias and marielitos that Castro shipped to the U.S -- obviously some of the subtexts tend to get lost amongst the violence.

Including the "successful" guys who come from the rich part of town and steal the girls next door from me I agree, there are some obvious famous women that I like (Eva Mendes being one), but generally the actresses/film stars I like are not of the typical variety. I do like the black girl in True Blood, I think shes gorgeous personally, one of the few reasons I even tolerate that show. I saw an interview with him once and didn't really care too much about him until I saw the show. Yes I am comparing him to that. I saw a film with him recently called "Straw Dogs", him and his character were pretty awesome in that film (I always root for the bad guys) but he's a terrible actor and doesn't have enough of a "bad guy" edge like say, Gary Oldman, despite the fact that he always gets those types of roles. I don't really care if his off screen persona is witty and charming, I'm not his chum or his girlfriend. I bet there are many porn stars who are just as witty and charming (if he even is) or more. Sorry, if he was ugly or 5'7 he wouldn't be famous, they put him on TV so girls will watch it.

Woggle Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 The Transformers movies sucked. I agree with whoever said there is not much out there for men except for bro comedies where men act like children or CGI action crap fests. Anybody can program a bunch of explosions on a computer. I have no issue with strong female characters that kick butt. I loved Kill Bill and Tarantino's movie in Grindhouse. Many of the few new music artists I actually are women so I am not against things geared towards women. I just think these vampire movies are corny as hell because they take what was once a bad ass kind of character and turn them into lovestruck wusses. I actually have an aversion to seeing wuss behavior promoted.

If trudging through a hot day to save your woman while your skin burns off your bones is wussy, or getting into a fight with one guy against a pack of rabid werewolves, bring on the wusses! And it should be noted that the women in the show don't just sit back and let the men die for them -- they dive into hell to save their men, too. I never said True Blood was Harvard material. TV is the opiate of the masses, so it's only permissible for it to be smart to a certain degree. But by TV standards, it's pretty damned smart.

I guess men know enough to know that this behavior does not work in real life.
ptp Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 I tried watching True Blood because I heard it was a good show. I started at the beginning since I am not really into this Twilight/Vampire type stuff so I wanted to get the entire story. I couldn't sit through more than 2 episodes..and I have no desire to return. If you want to watch good TV with good story lines watch "Breaking Bad" and "The Wire". Now those are 2 amazing shows.

dasein Posted December 20, 2011 Posted December 20, 2011 If you want to watch good TV with good story lines watch "Breaking Bad" and "The Wire". Now those are 2 amazing shows. Amen to those. "The Wire" is relatively less known because it was one of the only shows that didn't inject soap opera elements into later seasons in search of the female market. The first season of Breaking Bad was one of the best ever on TV because it contained exactly -0- gratuitious fem-elements. Then in the second season they tried to go for a female market, and the show's quality dropped precipitously. Someone wised up and the third and especially the fourth seasons went back to the amazing first season scripting. Thank goodness. Shows that started out great and masculine, and were then "femmed down" to bad effect include Rescue Me and the Sopranos. The second three seasons of the Sopranos were an utter joke compared to the first three due to marketing towards a female audience. The formula for many male-oriented shows today seems to be "get men watching, then transform the show to appeal to the mass female purchasing power." Most of the male audience will keep watching a great, male oriented show on the vapors of early efforts no matter how emotional and soapy they make it for women in later seasons.

OK let's not turn this into a tit-for-tat. We would all agree that both genders have double standards to deal with. The fact is, just like the single lonely men making these observations, single women can actually counter this. Movies generally put forward agendas anyway. And porn is just that, porn. It's not meant to make sense.
