Citizen Erased
Really?! Then I'm Satan's spawn by comparison. I dropped a whole watermelon on my brother's head from a ladder once. You two kids were simply...uh...congratulating the happy couple! I have done what could be considered worse things, but those I'm proud of. That one I'm ashamed of, I ruined someone's wedding. My brother peed on me once. Yep, just stood up and let loose on my head. It went in my mouth. Somewhat worse than watermelon. Now he was an awful child.

betterdeal
Giving kids something to do is about more than teaching them work ethic. It gives them ownership and therefore membership of the group. A home is a living thing that needs maintaining and in return it maintains you. A simpler more meaningful life occurs when you are present in the present, and by making that connection between children and their homes, you're encouraging them to live in the here and now. Els
We got one when I was about 10. Didn't have one in my last apartment, have one in my current one. I'm allergic to most detergents and even rubber gloves irritate my hands so I always get out of dishwashing duty anyway. I'm allergic too, but that never got me out of it. Currently I just suck it up and apply lots of moisturiser after. Time to get one! Get a front loading one, then you can watch the cloths go round and round. LOL!? I did ask around, but most people told me I'd need to scrub the dishes before putting them in the machine anyway. I didn't see a point of getting it in that case.
Ross MwcFan
Both of my children have had chores since about 4 years of age. Small things like picking up their toys, helping me get the clothes out of the dryer...little things like that. As they grew their chores increased. During the school year they did fewer things during the week(school was their main job) and gave me about 8 hours on the weekends for yard work and cleaning. They are young adults now that hold jobs and attend college. They still do their part at home and I am grateful until they decide it is time to move on. Chores didn't hurt me or my siblings and it has been good for my children as well. Sounds like you got the right balance and eased them into it.

Ross MwcFan
Oops, it was the other post that I should've deleted. As after posting, I noticed that betnotbroken mentioned that they did 8 hours of work at the weekend (4 hours on Sat and 4 hours on Sun), which sounds way too much to me. If it wasn't for that, then I would think she had the right balance.
jerbear
I'm allergic too, but that never got me out of it. Currently I just suck it up and apply lots of moisturiser after. Try the unscented liquids instead of powders. Powders make me itch but unscented liquids do not. I did ask around, but most people told me I'd need to scrub the dishes before putting them in the machine anyway. I didn't see a point of getting it in that case.I didn't have to but then again I got one that maybe loud but cleans. The ones with two jets, one for the top rack and the main one for the bottom rack.

If it wasn't for that, then I would think she had the right balance. Actually the 8 hours was spread out from Friday through Sunday. Most Sundays we did nothing after church. We are huge football fans, so during the season we are yelling at the tv. In the summer, we are usually headed in different directions. But I don't view 8 hours out of seven days...too much time. And that amount of time was only after they were double digit ages. Now they are pretty good about getting the job done fairly quickly so that they can do their own things. My youngest and I are still working out the dynamics of new job/school/home, but the adjustments are minor.
johan
I got you and Johan mixed up. Jerbear = Adorable. Lost my status. Well, even though I'm not adorable, I like to think there is still hope. Maybe my money will make a difference. Or my car. I have a nice car. I can make good guacamole. Art must be behind this. Art_Critic
I can't wait for my boy to be old enough to cut the grass and blow the leaves.. I'm tired of doing it... I'd tell you about how I grew up and chores vs work ethic but there isn't enough pages.. I'll just say that I was working a full time 10-12+ hr day since I was about 13.. I got more sleep in school than I got at home during high school and many days I went to school without sleep.. right out of the art studio/color lab/photo studio onto the school bus in the A.M. and right off the bus back to work at 3:30pm. It helped shape who I am today and gave me an incredible work ethic.. Will I make my son work like I did.. no way.. but he will learn many of the same things my Dad instilled in me... Do you really not like it? You don't feel it fits? Fine. Then please pick one from these others: 1) Delphic 2) Recondite 3) Abstruse 4) Gassy

Author cerridwen
I grew up thinking all they needed was a beer, a steak and a BJ and they'd be happy. That reminds me, another chore I performed as a child... Getting the menfolk their beer and food, perverts. ! I fell for it. My mother is from Barcelona, a fantastic cook and very health-conscious. Therefore, Saturday grocery shopping was a near all-day event. As the youngest, I naturally became her assistant. We'd go to one store for meat, another for vegetables, to the baker for bread, to the market for fruit, and so on. Nothing, and I mean nothing, came from a can. So, shopping for all the required ingredients took hours. I cursed every single one of them. Yet to this day, I can't bring myself to eat from cans too much. I don't think I've ever made spaghetti sauce from a jar. It's simply ingrained to eat healthy and well. For all the times I gritted my teeth and shook my fist at the sky on these shopping trips, they did me much good--and I'm grateful now.
