Pizzaman81 Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Hey, So last night this girl asked me how I went from being an artist to an engineer. I replied back with a rather long story. I tried my best to shorten it but I just wanted to capture some details. Well after I finished I realized.. Man that's a long message. It was like 2 paragraphs. So what are your impressions of a guy who writes a lot?
OnyxSnowfall Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 If they're literate and or well-written, then I prefer them to be a bit lengthy.
ditzchic Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 2 paragraphs isn't overly long. I would be fine with it. Actually pretty impressed because it shows you are somewhat of a conversationalist who knows how to express himself. I would say anything less than 5 paragraphs is good. I've had messages that were much longer than that and it felt like I was reading a damned novel. I quickly lost interest.
verhrzn Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 If it's not a first message, a few paragraphs is a very nice length. My rule of thumb is that each letter should be a paragraph or two longer than the one before it. However, if it's a good story, there is a perfect opportunity for you to say," Oh it's much better in person. Would you like to get coffee/dinner/what have you with me?"
carhill Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 " Oh it's much better in person. Would you like to get coffee/dinner/what have you with me?" OP, listen to this advice, which in no way diminishes your value as a writer. There's a time and place for everything. This presumes the girl is local to you and you are desiring to date her.
Author Pizzaman81 Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Oh man! I really messed up on this one then. I read it again and the entire message was like 3 paragraphs. This included my story and questions for her! Gah I knew something was off once I hit that send button. But thanks for the advices, I will use it next time!

So what are your impressions of a guy who writes a lot? Err, how can we give you a good answer without context? Is this someone you met through a dating site, how long have you known her, what communication preceded it, etc. Plus two paragraphs isn't much unless each is a huge wall of text.
RecordProducer Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 .. Man that's a long message. It was like 2 paragraphs. So what are your impressions of a guy who writes a lot? Is this your longest written work ever?

Lol, if it really turns her off it's probably for the best anyway.

My 2nd emails are typically 2 or 3 paragraphs and my conversion ratio of responses-to-dates is quite good. Just ask for her number in your next email to her.
Author Pizzaman81 Posted December 12, 2011 Author Posted December 12, 2011 Here's to hope she reads this on a 24" monitor *crosses fingers*
CocoaBrown Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Hey, So last night this girl asked me how I went from being an artist to an engineer. I replied back with a rather long story. I tried my best to shorten it but I just wanted to capture some details. Well after I finished I realized.. Man that's a long message. It was like 2 paragraphs. So what are your impressions of a guy who writes a lot? Is this on a dating website? I personally don't think that is too long of a message. I like when a guy has something to say. I hate when I get one word messages! I think if she asked and you feel like its a bit lengthy then at the end maybe mention it in a funny way...."well, enough about me"....and then ask her some questions about herself. I'm sure it was fine. Now if you dont hear back from her then....LOL
kaleidoscope Posted December 12, 2011 Posted December 12, 2011 Omg I've been writing to a girl I'm dying to impress and I normally write 4 or 5 pages by email. I should shorten it I think.
RecordProducer Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Omg I've been writing to a girl I'm dying to impress and I normally write 4 or 5 pages by email. I should shorten it I think. There is a chance she'll read the 4-5 pages. But you need to write only about your financial achievements if you want to impress her.
Ilovewater Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I appreciate long thoughtful messages. When my boyfriend and I first started dating (in an LDR), he would write me emails/letters that were at least 2 pages long! I loved it!
cerridwen Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I happen to like book, chapter, and verse, especially when the story's entertaining, or the man is particularly funny or smart. You included questions for her which is a good move, PMan. It shows interest. Don't consider it blown. Yet.
Ninjainpajamas Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Funny you'd ask the ladies that, because this is something that I have noticed based on my own experience. Long-winded writings are typically too much for most people to have interest in, people enjoy conversing about those types of things in person rather than someone just explaining the whole story. And since they don't know you well, it's harder to feel connected to that person/stranger and also makes you look like you might talk too much/too easily ramble on about non-sense. I think it's important to keep it short and sweet...especially in the beginning. Unless it's something very interesting to both people and they are equally engaged, which is my preference. As a rule of thumb though, If you're doing all the talking...probably not the best of topic for conversation Also honestly, I think most women on dating sites kinda want to cut to the chase anyway if they are interested, like a date or phone call etc..if they're really that interested.
FitChick Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I like long emails with lots of information. Saves time.
orion1010 Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 I don't think it's long at all.. It's way better than the "hey, what's up".. I hate that and ignore the email. But if a guy puts effort in, especially when I ask him about himself I would be impressed. good job.
lululucy Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 3 paragraphs is aaaaaall good. The only messages on an OLD site I was put-off by were the ones that were one or two sentences (generally with spelling or grammar errors) or nine to fifteen paragraphs.. a little excessive. Three, you're golden.
Author Pizzaman81 Posted December 13, 2011 Author Posted December 13, 2011 Ya, initially sent her a 1 liner. And boom she hits back with a few questions. Then my 3 paragraph message! Now no reply! Hahah I really should pay attention to... patterns
snug.bunny Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 It was like 2 paragraphs. So what are your impressions of a guy who writes a lot? That, he's very talented at writing a lot!
Emilia Posted December 13, 2011 Posted December 13, 2011 Ya, initially sent her a 1 liner. And boom she hits back with a few questions. Then my 3 paragraph message! Now no reply! Hahah I really should pay attention to... patterns If you want to date a moron with no attention span It depends on your type. I had much better dates with men that enjoy writing because we both knew we would be able to have a flowing conversation. I prefer to establish some rapport before meeting someone. That doesn't mean days and days of emailing but it does imply some meaningful chit chat to gauge his intellect (and vv).

I used to have so much luck with this online dating thing back 2 years ago. Now, I have orders of magnitude of less luck! Keep on trucking!!
