Anyone with any knowledge about styes? I've had one on my eye for about 2 months now. It is has grown and spread into the lower lid and there is a little lump inside my lower lid now which I believe is called a chalazion? I left it alone at first, thinking it would go by itself. After a few weeks, I went to my doc who prescribed me chloramphenicol ointment which I've used as instructed for about three weeks but it doesn't seem to be doing a thing. So I have a few questions:

1. Should I just keep on with the ointment? My eye irritates and would be irritating me even more if it weren't for the fact that I'm taking gabapentin for a pain condition.

2. Is there any other treatment that would work better?

3. Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Escalate your treatment. That's too long to have a stye. I'm not familiar with that other thing you mentioned. A stye should be treated as soon as it's discovered with proper medication. One should try the OTC ones right away and see a doctor if there are not adequate results within days. A prescription ointment should do the trick within a week. If you have no significant change after three weeks of having used the prescription, then you need to take it seriously and get further help ASAP. A regular old stye should be history by now by a wide margin. Don't panic, just get thee to a doctor and speak up.

Three weeks is a very long time for chloramphenicol to not work. Definitely go back and see the doctor.. another one, if your current one is not concerned.

Thanks very much for your replies. It's not a huge thing but good to have some support.

It looks like a regular stye and the doctor didn't seem concerned I'd had it for so long. He didn't exactly rush to prescribe anything. What did you mean by not a regular stye?

I don't want to make a fuss about anything but I would have thought the antibiotic ointment should be working by now.

When I was a kid I used to get styes a lot. The cure? Hot wash cloth against where the stye was, eventually it would pop.

See your eye or regular Dr to make sure you don't get an eye infection.

It isn't called making a fuss if you go back to the doctor when an antibiotic has not worked for 3 weeks :)
