It's tempting to think the prophets got their visions from hallucinogenic drugs, but I think the Hebrews must have been into using allegories, not dope. For instance, the Bible says Jonah was swallowed by a big fish... but we'd say someone is "in a pickle". It doesn't mean they're inside a giant pickled cucumber, it means they're in a difficult situation. Stuff like that.
