They can take the softly-softly approach and give false hope or they can make it clear as day they are gone for good. Of course it hurts to be left behind, but it is far better for them to go and give you no false hope. at least that is how I feel. All this trying to be friends when the crux of it is they don't want to be with you is a waste of time. you cannot be friends with someone you still want a relationship with. It's hard but the best way is to accept they are gone and slowly build up your confidence and start over again.
