phineas Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Hahaha I take it that's wesley snipes Blade in the background? Speaking of other vamp movies btw, when I was a kid we were into the old Hammer Christopher Lee/Peter Cushing movies, including the Dracula ones. NO women of any age were into those at all then. Now monster movies are for young girls and guys are watching shemale Michael Cera do nerd flicks. Yeah. I'm actually an Angel fan. wasn't into Buffy. Spike rocked!
silvermercy Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 My best friend is OBSESSED with Twilight and she's 29. (Don't be fooled that it's only teen girls watching it. According to her, there are myriads of 40+ year-old women who are huge fans of the franchise! I'll try to make it short and according to her the reasons of appeal for the fans are a lot: 1. The fictional characters are the typical dark, handsome and mysterious types. This is by DEFAULT sexy. I'm not a Twilight fan but I also like reading/watching other types of fiction where this is a common theme. This fantasy is simply exciting to read/watch. 2. The male actors playing those characters are HOT of course. Not many would watch it if the characters were average or less than average; (well yes! Women have eyes, too! lol). Basically, in Western films it's rare that you get REALLY hot male actors. We only get a Brad Pitt once in 20 years or so! But men still get all kinds of hot actresses in the meantime (Megan Fox, Angelina Jolie Charlise Theron, Scarlett Johannson... etc), so we females need to grab a chance ehen we see it! LOL Also in Hollywood (not in reality necessarily LOL) average guys will get the hot blond bombshell in the end (or at least the brunette equivalent). So, it's only exciting for a female to watch the opposite thing happening on the big screen for once! As I said, women have eyes, too. 3. The female heroine is the girl-next-door type. It makes it easier to relate and again it's exciting to live the fantasy of that really hot AND romantic male character TRULLY falling in love with her. I'd like to add that this phenomenon is relatively new to the Western world. So, of course people and men here will scratch their heads. In Asian countries, females are very well catered when it comes to male eye-candy and these kind of characters in stories. Just visit any anime or manga forum and you'll see. I'm sure you'll find it full of fanGIRLS. (One reason I wanna live in Japan one day! LOL ) Hope this helped!
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Also I loved the parody Beavis and Butthead did. Hahahahaha yes that was good. :laugh:They were bitten by a street bum and ended up with every disease in the book. I'm glad they brought Beavis and Butthead back. It's funny sh*t.
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I don't find either of the guys attractive. Taylor whatever just seems like a male bimbo. Edward seems like a wuss and he has no edge. See I love Edward. I think the actor that plays him is hot. I don't typically go for the pale, skinny boys, but he is very attractive. Plus in real life he's British. I love British boys.
phineas Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 You aren't going to like them. Unless you like romantical vampire novels. They aren't super sappy, but dudes generally just don't like Twilight. You would probably love Anne Rices Vampire Chronicles. Mail order those. And no need for your mom to order them. You can order them without shame. They are far less romantic. Interview With a Vampire is the first one. You saw the movie I'm sure. Did you like it? Again the book is way better. I was only partially serious about being embarrassed about the books. I'm more of a sci-fi / fantasy novel type of guy. Though I did like the Underworld movies & Blade movies. I just saw Priest. THAT I really liked.
Citizen Erased Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Robert Pattinson's hair is magical. That's why. But seriously, the books are terribly written. I love Anne Rice and it does kind of piss me off that these 4 incredibly badly written and executed books have made billions off of a sullen and rather ungrateful actress, a sexy British dude and a talentless actor that can't keep his shirt on. All while Anne got one semi-good film (would have been better if Tom Cruise wasn't in it) and one incredibly awful one when her books are so superior that I hate her and Stephanie Meyer being mentioned in the same sentence. Having said that, I like Twilight. In a way that I know it's bad, but the story gets to me. It gets through the knowledge that it's bad to that teenaged girl that's still inside of me. It's kind of unexplainable.

Well that's another reason I started the thread as several press outlets have stated the above. But sorry, I'm not buying the "eye candy" thing. Women have had plenty o eye candy available for a long long time, my sister had some old Scott Baio Tiger Beats growing up from an aunt so I know this particular form of "idoru" has been around since the 70s at least and before. My mother has every Johnny Mathis and Tom Jones album made (woahwoahwoah). Soap operas didn't just come out last week. So I see none of the women in the thread wants to talk about the supernatural bestial rape symbolism and why that is appealing?

It's Edward and that pale skin and HAIR!! Hahahahaha they are decent books. I read them quickly. I mean they are meant for young girls. What do you expect? It's not going to be some profound sh*t like Anne. I love Anne by far above all others. She is actually one of my favorite authors. I love her writing style and her elaborate descriptions. Purple prose is what they call it. Her book "The Witching Hour" is another amazing book. One of my favorites books of all time. I've read it 3 times. Love it and love her.

I was sooooo looking forward to it after seeing the trailer, it sounded so promising (the effects, the (hot) actor, hehe... the black hoods, the darkness, the atmosphere, the monsters...) but the script was simply its weakest point. Was dissapointed because it would have been a GREAT movie otherwise. I just got bored after a while because it seemed like a I was seeing a lot of movies being copied together.
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Anyone here watch True Blood? Those are some sexy vampires and werewolves for sure. F*ck Twilight.
Author dasein Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 There are actually only four science fiction movies: Blade Runner 2001 The Matrix Alien
BillieAnn Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I hate these new shallow movies with monsters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Oh, I hear you on the British boys. They're delicious. But Robert Pattinson has always looked a bit soft in the head to me. I feel bad saying this seems he comes off as a nice dude but he just doesn't ooze any sexual charisma imo. I know most women would probably disagree with me, though. Oh Lord I hope that's a wig. He looks awful in that picture. He does seem nice and very self deprecating which is kind of sexy. I would bang him in a heartbeat.

So I see none of the women in the thread wants to talk about the supernatural bestial rape symbolism and why that is appealing? haha! I beg to differ. There ARE hot males out there, they are just REALLY DIFFICULT to find (they're just hidden behind all those millions of pictures of hot women LOL. Maybe this happened in the last decade or so. I dunno.. When I try to search for hot men pictures I will either end up viewing naked women or gay men). Ah, the supernatural beast symbolism... I think when I mentioned dark/mysterious I touched a bit on that... I do love supernatural romance (even though not a fan of Twilight). Hmm... Why do we love that? Perhaps it makes it more exciting to have a supernatural element in it? It adds to the adventure feeling? The feeling you get when you watch a horror movie: you get scared but it's still pleasant. That's because you know you're in control ALL THE TIME. In reality I doubt I'd love to meet a vampire in real life outside my door, no matter how hot, hansome and sexy that vampire was!!! LOL
Woggle Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Boy bands and teen idols have been around for decades. Male eye candy is nothing new. Believe it or not Mel Gibson used to actually be considered a heart throb.
Author dasein Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 In reality I doubt I'd love to meet a vampire in real life outside my door, no matter how hot, hansome and sexy that vampire was!!! LOL Ah I understand kinda. Just always wondered how women for whom rape is a real true terror could warm up to fantasies involving beings who pretty much rape their prey. It would be as if guys liked to fantasize about a female type of demon who cut off male genitalia. Wouldn't get much play in guyland. Would think women would feel similar about the vamp.
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Boy bands and teen idols have been around for decades. Male eye candy is nothing new. Believe it or not Mel Gibson used to actually be considered a heart throb. Hell yeah he was. Mad Max anyone?? One word: Yummy. If he wasn't such a bastard and a raging booze hound, he'd still be hot.
Author dasein Posted November 23, 2011 Author Posted November 23, 2011 Blade Runner is possibly my favorite movie of all time. We will have to make a "was deckard a replicant?" thread around here on another forum sometime.
snug.bunny Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 People enjoy fiction, it isn't anything "new"... I watched the first three movies on cable (I watched New Moon first before Twilight, because that's what was on the TV) but I preferred it over Twilight after watching both and then Eclipse. The relationship between Edward and Bella was/is primarily driven by lust, but, most "overly romanticized" movies are. Eclipse tried to steer a bit away from that, which was most depicted during the "tent" scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hjOAunM40k Twilight may send the wrong message overall, to females, whereas Bella wants to change herself into a vampire for Edward. While he does treat Bella well, he ended up ditching her but later reunite after Bella goes after him to save him from sacrificing himself out of guilt. It appears "romantic and heroic" but, I can see how it could send the wrong message.

Believe it or not Mel Gibson used to actually be considered a heart throb. Oh sure. I'm not arguing that. It's somehow difficult for a female to find a LOT of pictures/videos of hot STRAIGHT men or models online. They're few, relatively speaking. If you can handle it, I dare you to google a bit. hehe... You'll most likely end up on a gay site. lol PS: I didn't like Mel Gibson in his youth or now... He's a great actor though.
OnyxSnowfall Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 I don't know... I've never read the books nor watched any of the films, heh.

It's actually based of a Korean comic book so that should explain it.
ShannonMI Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 Btw the Twilight series has the same exact plot of every trashy romance novel ever written. Woman meets sexy brooding standoffish guy who she assumes hates her at first. Then he surprises her with a love confession and they have a torrid affair against a backdrop of strife of some sort. Seriously, if you ever skim through the romance novels they sell in supermarkets they all have this plot. The only reason this series is more successful than others like it is marketing. It's funny because I loath romance novels, but I enjoy the Twilight books. It's must be the vampire thing that I like. If Edward were just a normal boy, I wouldn't enjoy it nearly as much. And the fact that there is so much f*cking sexual tension in those books. It's enough to drive you mad. The author couldn't exactly include sex scenes because the books are meant for kids, but damn I wish there were some. There was only one with ZERO description. It was such a let down. Romance novels on the other hand are ridiculous with their sex scenes and descriptions. There are almost laughable. "He thrust his purple headed warrior into her quivering fur mound." Ahhhh not really a turn on.
OnyxSnowfall Posted November 23, 2011 Posted November 23, 2011 BS:p:lmao: Is it really *that* prevalent? It seems like it would appeal to a teenage crowd, heh.
