Leegh Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 I have two cups of (caffeinated) coffee (large mugs) when I wake up in the morning with no food, then I'll have breakfast about 2 to 3 hours later. Would it be better if I ate something before having coffee, as I want to improve my eating habits? Does consuming caffeine on an empty stomach stress the body?
thehead Posted October 30, 2011 Posted October 30, 2011 It might not stress the body but coffee has a lot of acid in it. My ex had your same routine. She'd use a French Press and make strong black coffee each day. She'd done it for years. Eventually, she started complaining of stomach trouble after 2 cups. Eat something like bread for absorption. It can't hurt.
Cypress25 Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Coffee is not breakfast. There's no nutrition in it. Best to eat breakfast within an hour of waking. Your body has been fasting for at least 8 hours during the night, so eating when you wake up gets your metabolism going and it gives you the energy you need for the morning. It's really better not to drink coffee with meals because the tannins in coffee and tea block the absorption of many of the nutrients in food. If you need coffee, drink it between meals, after you've digested the food.
USMCHokie Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 I have become a pretty big fan of intermittent fasting after tman introduced it to me on LS. I will have a liter and a half of coffee throughout the morning starting around 7 and then eat "breakfast" around noon and shift the rest of my meals accordingly for the rest of the day.
Els Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Aside from the fact that caffeine is proven to give you no advantage in concentration over a non-caffeine drinking person from at most the 7th consecutive day onwards, and that you are thus pumping daily ephinephrine analogs into your body everyday for no real reason except to keep yourself from withdrawal... Nah, no specific health reason you should have coffee after breakfast, if you aren't feeling the pain of doing so already. Coffee is acidic and increases stomach acid, but for some people it has no noticeable effect, so if you don't feel heartburn you should be fine. I really do not understand why some people are against many forms of medicine but happily pump caffeine, a very real drug and possibly as potent as most OTC medications, into their body daily. That may not be applicable to the OP, just a rant. >.>

It is always better to eat something wholesome for breakfast. Remember when you wake up you haven't eating for 8 or more hours so your body is in starvation mode, and slows down your metabolism. I always try to eat something, if I have time I eat oatmeal if I don't granola bar.

Ah, I was wondering if you ever tried it or not. I'm still doing it myself, and happy as ever (lifts still moving up, body fat under control, etc.). Glad to hear you're enjoying it!
adipex Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 The caffeine, oils and acids in coffee irritate the stomach lining, which can cause excessive production of hydrochloric acid leading to a variety of digestive ailments. http://www.adipexalternative.com

I swear I've seen them before, just don't remember where.
AHardDaysNight Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 It's never good to drink coffee on an empty stomach. Coffee is very acidic, and there is nothing to absorb the acid.

Yea, I've had pretty good success with it to shed that last little bit of body fat to get disturbingly lean.
betterdeal Posted November 1, 2011 Posted November 1, 2011 Maybe add something to your breakfast such as yoghurt and honey, then think about reducing the coffee. The meal you have several hours later is not breakfast, btw. Elevenses or brunch, but not breakfast. I find yoghurt and honey (sometimes with grapes, sliced apple) is easier to face than cereal first thing in the morning. The yoghurt gives you friendly bacteria (good for digestion) and the honey is a natural antibiotic, as well as full of sugary goodness The yoghurt will also neutralise the acidity of the coffee.
Koyal Posted November 16, 2011 Posted November 16, 2011 Ya its not the good habbit atleast you should have 1 glass of water before it then you can have whatever you wanna have.
RiverRunning Posted December 1, 2011 Posted December 1, 2011 It is important to eat a little something. A little nonfat yogurt with granola, chop up some fruits (strawberries, blueberries...well, I guess you don't need to chop up blueberries) for a quick breakfast...oatmeal...even just a handful of nuts for some quick early morning protein.
