Dust Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 A lot of guys on this forum who wish for a better love life could learn a thing or two from Zorba the Greek. There are a lot of movies with cool characters who just seem to enjoy life and adventure and get the girl. From Marty in “Back to the Future” who even gets his own mom too Indiana Jones and James Bond. One movie that really spoke to me on love and life is Zorba the Greek with Anthony Quinn. I highly recommend this movie to any guy having trouble. You can learn a lot from it and its entertaining too.
Author Dust Posted October 18, 2011 Author Posted October 18, 2011 Something doesn't have to be real to enjoy and learn from it. Don't take life to seriously or you'll never make it out alive.
ChessPieceFace Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 Movies are mostly nonsense. What was the message in BttF then? Beat a guy up to get the girl? I guess that might be true, though you'd probably end up with a criminal record, when the jerk who deserved it presses charges against you.

You're telling me you'd watch a girl you cared for get raped in a car because you're afraid of a criminal recod. Look watch Zorba the Greek and then you tell me you didn't learn anything.
Cee Posted October 18, 2011 Posted October 18, 2011 As a hobby, I watched dozens of romantic type movies to learn something about love and romance. It was fun critiquing the films. Most of them were a pretty bad formula. My favorite films were about self-development rather than landing a man or woman at the end. Even though romantic movies tend to tack on this get the guy/girl happy ending, the best part is seeing how the protagonist deals with doubt and adversity. I've never seen Zorba the Greek, but I want to watch it. I also recommend for Love Shackers the lesser known Scorcese black comedy Afterhours. The whole movie is about a first date going horribly wrong. It's hilarious and so, so dark. What the guy goes through in the course of one night is crazy. Lighter fare is the 70s film Harold and Maude. This love story is so unusual, hilarious, and is about a young man finding his joy and will to live. Harold's faux suicide scenes are priceless and basically tap into alienation, but twists it into an optimistic way. As for films that show women as independent protagonists, there are fewer of them. The best ever is Ruby in Paradise from the late 80s/early 90s. Ashley Judd is beautiful and has romantic sub-plots, but the movie is about her discovering herself rather than landing a man. That movie changed my life.

No, just telling you that in this garbage world we live in, you are usually punished for doing what's right.
Author Dust Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 grkBoy knows! They went through all that and cam out laughing and dancing in the end. Seriously for all the guys who are so worried about failure they don't even live their life. Watch this movie! Then come post here I'd be interested to hear your reactions. grkBoy are you care free and full of life like Zorba?
mike111 Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 A lot of guys on this forum who wish for a better love life could learn a thing or two from Zorba the Greek. Typical Greek. Wants to have a lot of fun, dance around and celebrate, meet all the women, retire early, bankrupt the entire country -- then ask the rest of Europe to bail them out !! mike

Tybalt Posted October 19, 2011 Posted October 19, 2011 Ack! Ruby In Paradise is not available on Netflix. Zorba is, however. I love movies that are about choosing to be joyful despite tribulation (even unfathomable tribulation). Like Life Is Beautiful. I liked the youtube scene from Zorba...
Author Dust Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 I might have to check this one out... You could learn a thing or two from Zorba. Let me know when you watch it.

Author Dust Posted October 19, 2011 Author Posted October 19, 2011 Will do. Just hope it's on streaming Netflix... I don't think it is. It's probably playing on tv or you can get it at the library.
