Long story short, I’m 28 and I’m friends with a 40-y.o. woman at work. We’ve worked at the same company for about two years now and there’s always been strong chemistry between us. We get along great, have a lot in common, enjoy each other’s company, etc., so I gathered up the nerve to ask her out about three months ago and she said that it would be inappropriate for us to date since we work together. She admitted that she likes me and thinks about me all the time, but that I’m so much younger than her and I need to focus on my career right now. As a side note, she did date a younger guy once, who was 22 when she was 37, and he burned her pretty badly, so I’ve heard from friends of her’s that she’s “given up” on dating younger guys.

So since then, that’s what I’ve been doing. I put it all behind me and accepted the fact that we would only be just friends. She and I also go to the same gym, and that’s usually where we do most of our talking. But in the last couple of months, I’ve been so busy with things and have been a bit distant with her both there and at work.

So now to the real story. She trains for about 40 weeks out of the year for triathlons, etc., so usually after one of these events, she likes to treat herself to junk food for a couple of days. About three weeks ago, she finished second in her latest triathlon, so I decided to surprise her with her favorite sweets. She completely flipped out when I gave them to her, in a good way. Then later that night, she started texting me, telling me how awesome they were and how surprised she was, followed by about 1,000 :)s. She has another tri in three weeks, so I told her I would have something even more elaborate for her after the next one and she replied “I can’t wait!! You’re too good to me!” So one day this past week, she brought it back up and tried to guess what I would get for her. She brought it up, was excited about it, then said “You really don’t have to do anything …” Then later that night, she was texting me again telling me how much she’s looking forward to it. Typical woman. ;) To top it all off, ever since the first time I did something like that for her a few weeks ago, she’s been all over me. I’m sure it’s partly because I had been distant with her for a while up to that point, but still …

“I think about you all the time.”

“You’re too good to me.”

“You really don’t have to do anything …”

And she says we shouldn’t date. Am I over-analyzing her when she says these things? Because to me, it sounds like she wants to, but is scared.

She likes the gifts and attention but still isn't planning on banging you.

“I think about you all the time.” = I LIKE YOU.

“You’re too good to me.” = YOU ARE SO SWEET!

“You really don’t have to do anything …” = YOU DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING, BUT DEEP DOWN I HOPE THAT YOU DO. .....or it could mean..... PLEASE DON'T ACTUALLY DO ANYTHING.

I think she takes issue with the difference in age and that you both work together.
