It relieves their guilt from dumping you and helps them heal, even though it adds more pain to yourself. Nobody wants to be hated by anyone. By staying in contact with the dumper it relieves that stress they may feel from dumping you and makes them feel liked by you. If you cut contact with them, they may begin to doubt their decision of dumping you and may want to reconcile in the future; although, the possibility is very slim. If this concept seems alien to you just try to imagine the dumper cutting ties with you completely... How would you feel? would you be fine with them hating you? would them cutting all ties with you strengthen that urge of you wanting another chance with them?... same concept but on different terms because they are the one that terminated the relationship.
