Allman Brothers- "Jessica"

Hey--I'll NEVER get tired of "Jessica"...........

One of the really cool aspects of the song is that it absolutely does embody a sense of pure, unfettered joy.............

........without a single word---it's only the instruments speaking---music in it's purest form, IMO. There's no agenda, as there often is with lyrics---(making a point, trying to win someone's heart, or seduce them, venting emotions, etc.......)

I don't mean to knock music with lyrics--I like plenty of it---I'm just saying there's usually an agenda with lyrics......

So,when an instrumental piece of music can evoke such a strong feeling of happiness........I'm impressed.

I like your analysis on instrumental vs. lyrical music. :)

Instrumental music does have an agenda though, and that is to evoke/produce feelings.

That's why it's so often used as backdrops in movies. With lyrical music, it's the inbetween (the silence between each lyric within the song, where the "heart of it" is produced from...).

thanks for the compliment...:)

And I will meet you halfway, regarding your statement about instrumental music having an agenda as well--I agree--it can, especially in soundtracks, as you pointed out.

I'm still inclined to view lyrical music as more--manipulative? I guess.....I realize that the word "manipulative" tends to carry a negative connotation usually---but that's not how I'm intending it its use here.......

I'm saying "manipulative" in that I find lyrical music to be more geared towards swaying a person's emotions--it's more blatant. (which isn't always a bad thing--I've been deeply inspired by lyrics, before...) Instrumental music can have a a wider interpretation of meaning,IMO.

I guess for me, personally---I appreciate instrumental music because I don't feel like it's trying to lead me one way or another--JMHO

(......or, maybe I'm somewhat biased because I am an instrumentalist...:o For me, the best part of a song is the "voices" of the instruments--)

And the sun which formally shone

In the clearest summer sky

Suddenly just changed address

Now shines from his blue eyes

Then he appeared

Sparkling shooting star that dropped in my lap

I was a little troubled

But with him my senses bubble

And the moon which formally shone

On the marbled midnight mile

Suddenly just packed its bags

Now shines from his bright smile
