I assume that when guys go out there "in search of" they want to avoid women that are termed "sluts". But what is a slut? Is it as the feminists claim: an term that is used to unfairly subjecate women that are "free" from the sexual norm. There is a certain derision or a fundamental ugliness and disparagment in the term slut. The question remains, why do we have a term for a women that sleeps around but not for a man that sleeps around? Why are women held to a higher standard? I assume it is partially due to tradition (i.e. how things have always been) and especially of one that has been rife with inequality, but I assume there are other equally valid reasons why this is so, even possiblly what we would call "natural" reasons or those having to do with the natural behavior (most of which in my opinion is highly programmed)/relations between males and females.

On the physical base, i find a slut someone who dresses in very revealing clothes almost everyday (short skirt and halter top or something of the like) and someone who does not conduct themselves lady-like when wearing these things. its hard to explain !

I've noticed the language has loosened up a bit. In the conversations I've heard lately, men are called sluts when they sleep around primarily with what one would refer to as "skanks".

Slowly but surely, I guess.....

When I was growing up I was told that a slut was any girl who had sex outside of marriage, and any girl that dressed in such a way as to tease men (skirts above the knee, no socks or nylons, no shoes, no bra, bare midriff, etc.)

The reason sluts were (are?) considered 'bad' is because they are flaunting sins against God and will go to hell. Prostitutes were paid sluts. Whore was just another word for slut.

Men were bound by the same laws of God (not to have sex before marriage) but somehow they were never held to the same standards of scorn or perceived punishment by God.

That is what I was told and how I was raised, and how most of America believed then. Women did not work outside the home. They were to be respected and it was the man's responsibility to take care of women and support them. We were considered the weaker sex and should be cherished and different things were expected of women. For a woman to have sexual desires was a deep, dark secret and for a woman to openly express those desires was scandal!

I think the definition of a slut changes with each generation - but I still think the word itself denotes some type of shame or shameful act or attitude.

I think that a pig is a male slut and a slut is a female pig.

or something like that :bunny:

BTW, I couldn't define sluttish behaviour. My calling any girl a slut is always linked to negative/hateful/jealousy feelings I have towards her.

I'd never call a slut a girl who is wearing revealing clothes in a females-only enviroment, but I would if she was drawing all the attention from a guy I'm interested in.

No strip club girl is a slut to me until my bf goes to one of those places.

No female friend of my bf is a slut to me until she behaves in a way I feel inappropriate when she is with him. Even if it's not her fault!

No girl who sleeps around is a slut to me if she firt makes sure people she has sex with are single.

In my mums time 1945 to 1950 the word slut .

did not exist.

minx was used ? slut is a modern word >for sleeping a round.

I think its a bad word to call any woman .

life is easy for us men we do not get called .

Crazy world we live in too day. But any decent gent would not call a girl a slut. But a lot off gents do in anger.

Hmmmm....didn't "minx" have a different connotation? As I recall, a minx was a seductive woman, not necessarily exhibiting characteristics of a slut.

My understanding is that a slut is someone who uses her body (assuming it's a female but is the same with men) to get what they want.

A woman who dresses in skanky clothes to get male attention and who acts overly provacative. Someone who sleeps around with a lot of different men. A girl who flaunts herself shamelessly in hopes of gaining the attention of men rather single or otherwise!

Basically the post above hit the nail on the head!

This question is unanswerable because of the way society has raised us. I find it very unfair to call a female a slut for the same behavior a man would be getting a high five for.

Thank you for the responses. First I don't think a man can be a slut. I think, and I said this before, that the dirty little secret of sexuality is that the woman picks the man and so a big responsibility is placed on her shoulders as per the sexual/marriage aspect of life. I think a slut is as one poster said a woman that sleeps with many men simultaneously. The quintessential slut of all time was Helen, who of course there is a movie coming about about called Troy. The Trojan War was fought over Helen more than over anyone or anything else. It was like a high school gang fight. What you had was grown men fighting over the prettiest girl in class and the girl manipulating all of them because she is afraid of intimacy or is drunk on the power she has to get men to do what she wanted them to do, instead of growing up and being mature and finding productive ways to deal with the world and succeed in life. A slut is not a whore, a whore is someone that gets paid for sex, a prostitute, which is another type of woman that doesn't respect herself.

So men are basically stupid and helpless to women?

No, but some choose to be, and that is what I am criticizing. I don't believe anyone has to be stupid or helpless, everyone has a choice they can make to improve their perception of the world and not feel helpless.

....Everyone has a choice, but it's the woman who picks the man. And manipulates them.

anyone can be a slut honey- sloppy housework, sloppy morality, sloppy value system....it's just the dictionary has been slow to catch up.

In old english a slut or slattern was someone who discharged their domestic arrangements poorly...which in earlier times would have been a woman's responsibility. And we all know now how unfair that is....

I wouldn't go near a man who uses the word 'slut' to describe women...no compassion, no empathy, no soul.

In your weirdly gendered world, cap, a sexually empowered woman, such as Helen, is a "slut". On the other hand, her male "conquests" are helpless saps. I'd rather be a slut than a sap. On to other things.

To me, a "slut" is an epithet some folks use to brand a woman who, for reasons having to do with either sexual behavior or display, they do not like. It says more about the brander than the branded. It is an attack term used to demean, belittle and insult woman: To keep them in their place. It is a term of subjugation.

First of all for the millionth time, can you cut me some slack magda.

and to bobbie, i wasn't describing women in general but a particular type of woman.

The four types of bad women to be avoided are:

bitch: a female that disparages, controls, and puts down the other.

manipulative bitch: and then smiles (these two definitions are according to an old professor of mine and I find them appropro so to speak).

c**t: a female that uses her sexuality to get ahead in the world.

slut: a female that sleep with many men at once and often before establishing a certain level of intimacy with them.

whore: a slut that charges money for the use of her sexuality.

Millionth time?

Alright, but only because you're a man.

(Just for a little while, mind you.)

I like the way Zarathustra put it.

How refreshing to see someone who believes that he can categorize humans - particulary women - into wide groups of stereotypes based on bogus generalizations. NOT.
