I live in NY and spent most of my working life here (born abroad and grew up in NY surbubs). NYC 2003 has a real 'tude. I feel I need to qualify myself before I speak though - since he tends to dismiss most people. I am well-traveled, educated and also work in your same industry. Also I was last week in Scandinavia at the restaurant which is now considered the best in the world (I am a foodie and obviously it takes some effort for that reservation to work out).

Anyway - to a decent extent - taste is on the tongues of the taster (kind of like beauty is in the eyes of the beholder).

SO given my background etc., I still side with mimi, zen, zenobia, mme chaucer etc. You need to chill out.

Others take a look at a thread he started asking if a superiority complex is something which exists. He might be asking that question for a good reason?

At any rate - all NYers aren't like this guy. You do need to step off the pedestal. . .

Man, an empty vessel sure makes the most noise...

Hilarious. You know what they say about arguing with ignorant people though...they drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

If East Coast sushi sucks then why do you continue to eat it?

Because I like sushi and live on the East Coast. As I explained, it sucks relative to sushi in other places. And sometimes it is surprisingly decent, as was this week's sushi place. But I said all this already. And yes, if you read the post where I said East Coast sushi sucks it was clearly both a slight hyperbole and an aside. This argument didn't become serious till you tried to say NYC had the best sushi, unarguably. Which is just blatantly ridiculous.

And again, with quality, I'm not talking about taste AT ALL. I'm talking about food quality and freshness. Which are not a matter of opinion.

If you're from NYC and have such a limited concept of culture here then that means you must not get out of the house much. Try it sometime, you'd be surprised at how much this city has to offer. Much better use of your time than sitting at home in front of your computer all day coming up with non-sensical "facts".

You are loaded with "facts" aren't you?! IMPRESSIVE! You must have some high tech pc software or something...

The bolded- I know right! Sucks! You know the feeling all too well. We shall meet and enjoy the outdoors, since we get so little of it. ;) Wait for Irene to pass though...

And if you have more factless insults to spit at me, you can always PM me. Philly's thread probably going to get locked.:(

Then again, Lord knows where Tony is nowadays.

Anyone who considers their tastes and opinions superior to anyone else's needs a reality check, you included. Your opinions are no better than anyone else's, so you may want to look underneath your own feet to see what kind of pedestal you're standing on yourself.

What I mean by "not talking about taste" is . . .

I'm not talking about whether a Cali Roll style roll is better than the Philly Roll or Volcano Roll or Spicy Tuna Roll or Crunchy Eel Roll; I'm talking about the quality of ingredients, freshness, and location.

I will give you credit for being hard-headed enough to try to actually argue that your opinion is fact. Not many people would be presumptious enough to do so, but you don't seem to have a problem proclaiming that your tastes are representative of everyone else's and anyone who disagrees with you is wrong.

There's no reason for this thread to get locked because no one's personally attacking anyone except for you. So if anything your non-contributive, pointless posts could get removed but that wouldn't detract from the rest of the thread at all.

You are missing the point.

MY individual opinion is not fact. The geographical restrictions of the East Coast in regards to sushi-grade fish are facts.

Last time I checked, the East Coast has the word "coast" in it because it's located next to an ocean. Are you going to say that the Atlantic Ocean's fish don't taste as good as the Pacific's? In that case, that would be...wait for it...an OPINION.

I thought you grew up in a sushi culture. :)

Maybe you need to investigate more about where the highest sushi-grade fish come from, etc. That's not "my individual opinion." It's a stated fact. (Granted, some facts, like statistics, are aggregated opinions rather than, say, science, which is still not always firmly true. Really the opinion/fact scale is more a scale than anything else. But I'm not talking about individual taste here.)

Granted, I'm talking about sashimi and sushi using fish. If you're talking veggie sushi or something, which is still sushi, then we're using a different scale. But if you're paying $20 for a plate of veggie sushi, you're kinda silly. I made avocado sushi the other day at home, and it cost me like $7 for a huge amount and most of that was the cost of the avocado.

Fact: sushi-grade fish comes from many different parts of the world, not just the coast of Japan. It doesn't take much knowledge of sushi to understand that concept. Opinion: whether one person prefers the taste of fish that comes from one region versus the other. There is no consensus over what part of the world has the best tasting fish. That why taste is considered an opinion and not a fact. To claim that your own region has the best tasting fish for anyone other than yourself is self-serving and biased.

I never said it ONLY came from the coast of Japan (and in fact even said it didn't) but the highest sushi-grade fish is caught nowhere near the East Coast of the U.S. Again, do some research on sushi and fish quality, as ranked by those who rank such things. (Not individual critics. Again, I'm not talking individual taste.)

I've never claimed "my own region" has the best tasting fish. . . in fact, I just complained about my region not having as good a grade of fish for sushi. Again, I am from the East Coast of the U.S. and live here now. I was raised in the Southeast, have family in the Northeast, and also happen to have family in California and Japan, but calling Japan "my region" would be untrue.

Even a professional food critic's opinion is exactly that -- an opinion. At the end of the day, "quality" is a subjective concept based on how much someone enjoys the taste of their meal. "Those who rank such things" are as human as you and me, and therefore their opinions are no better or worse than yours or mine. Note that I do not claim my tastes are superior to yours or anyone else's, and yours aren't either.

Actually, if a thread is off subject it gets locked and THAT is a "fact".

And if you think that a STFU is a "personal attack", manup buddy! You're going around in circles, insulting people, calling them ignorant, uneducated, narrowed minded, inexperienced because you are King know-it-all? You are judging people based on fricking "SUSHI"? HOW PATHETIC IS THAT! Stop talking smack already! You are calling people out on the same nonsense that you are also taking part in.

Don't reply back with the same "you're ignorant, don't get out much, sit in front of your pc all day, making pointless posts" bs. It only comes across as a bit immature and arrogant on your side, yet also not much of good manly manners. That's more of a bytch trait. Seems like you can't defend yourself with anything else, but yet pointless wannabe insults. In reality, you personally don't know anyone here so who are you really to judge? AND you are judging someone based on their Sushi expertise? Let's get real. You don't know me, don't how where & how I was raised, where I've been or what I do for a living. So, in your own words...

May I add, without facts.

BTW- D'Agostino has THE BEST SUSHI IN THE WORLD for $5.99! Right now, it sure taste like the "BEST SUSHI IN THE WORLD". A hungry stomach doesn't discriminate! That's my stomach's opinion. :D

Poor Philly. Philly, where the hell are ya????? We know you are not working! :p

Another "I-have-to-get-the-last-word-in-because-I-don't-have-anything-meaningful-to-add-to-this-conversation" post full of pointless drivel. You don't know me either so any personal comments you have about me are just that...pointless. You sound more and more sheltered with every insult you make.

Uh, I have no idea how this thread turned into a debate about sushi, but okay.

First, dude who started this post, I feel mixed. I understand your upset. If I recall correctly, you said she did know you were unemployed. I agree that it was weird how she just walked away.

Personally, I feel awkward at the whole paying thing. I've always heard that the man pays unless the subject of dutch is brought up. Also, I don't know if I can talk, I was asked out on a date by a guy while on vacation. We went to have burgers and I was standing next to him. Since h ordered for the both of us, I didn't offer to pay for my own food. Even though I would have been quite happy to have done so.

However, if he had said okay, go first or something, I would've taken that as my cue to pay for my own meal. Thus, this girl was either ignorant or definitely manipulating the situation.

Ultimately, it's up to you on what you want to do. But if you're that upset about it, move on.

P.S. I couldn't stop without giving my own opinion on sushi. The fact of the matter is friends, no matter where you go, if you feel that something is good, it's good. That's how it goes.

Last year I was visiting Arizona. My relative who lives in the area took me out to eat. We went to a Tokyo Express. I had a chicken katsu and a cup of miso soup. It was the most nastiest, least-appetizing version of Japanese food I'd ever eaten.

I'm half-Japanese. I've grown up eating Japanese food. My relative even more so. However, my relative would rave throughout the meal on how good the food was, and how this place was the best place for him to come when he wanted Japanese food.

All a matter of opinion, I say.

This thread is something. It started as a rant by a guy who was upset because he had to pay for his date, but turned into to a debate about which city has the best sushi. I like a good debate as much as anyone, but you're arguing about sushi, really?

Its really kind of subjective anyway. NYCguy may love the taste of NY sushi and find Japanese sushi to be lacking a certain something.

And Zengirl might feel strongly that the country where sushi originated obviously has the best.

Neither is right or wrong, it all depends on what you like.

Me, I like the JB roll they make at the local supermarket. Hey, its fresh and I'm Jewish, so pretty much anything with cream cheese will taste good to me. :p

I don't like sushi at all. Raw fish, cold rice, blech. :p So it doesn't matter WHERE the best sushi can be found.

Indian food, a different matter. Give me some Tandoori chicken any day. :)

I GOT A CLUE FOR YOU! (as to why they don't stick around)

WATER ICE? Is that like Italian Ice? Cute. These dates sound juvenile. Again, I don't know your age but 8th grade "crush" does such dates.

You're gonna have to step it up to keep someone interested. I don't exactly mean it in a material way but unless you are dating 16y/o chicks, those dates sound a bit stale. I'm just keeping it real with you, bro.

I'm in my mid 30's. So it's something wrong with going to a place serves ice cream in the summer time and then a walk afterwards?????

Posted

If going for an ice cream and a walk is your natural self, then it's good and right for you. If the woman is compatible and finds you attractive, then it will be for her too. IME, it's not about the what, where or when, rather the who. The key is accepting that everyone is different and some people will think your natural self, ice cream and walk are about as far away from what they want as life can get. The cool thing is that's OK. Billions more to be served :)

A drink in NYC is average $14-18 at a whishy-washy spot. At a "hot spot" like $21. A beer is $8. LOL! Movies is $14 p/p or something like that. A cab is like $2.50 off-peek hrs the minute to sit inside. It's NYC "The Melting-Pot" so it also depends on your taste & pocket. You'll be dining at White Castle if you only got $20 for a date. NOT EVEN! Sal's Pizzeria more like it, and only a few slice of Pizza. :o

Philly- you don't have to say exactly where but where do you live?

I live in Center City

Nothing wrong with that at all, as long as the conversation is good. :)

So wait, the person doing the asking is always supposed to pay? Always?

I used to think dating was two freely associating people. It didn't matter who paid for what, rather, the fact that they enjoyed each other's company and had some sort of romantic inclinations is what really mattered. I guess I should re-evaluate that opinion. It's really just a mercenary arrangement, feelings don't really exist.

What you should really do is step into the 2000's.

How can you not know by now that the person who extended the invitation should be prepared to foot the total bill?

Posted
If you're unemployed and broke, you shouldn't be dating at all.

Tell that to the homeless people who on occasion marry one another, and tell that to the various culprits who are arrested and/or ticketed for committing lewd acts outdoors and in plain sight because they have no homes to go to.
