Technically I claimed Japan had the best after you went all ridiculous claiming NYC had unarguably the best sushi. And I never said it couldn't be argued. There are other countries and locales you could say get a similar quality of fish. Not anywhere near NYC, though. All the good fish there is traveling quite a long ways.

But Japan has some of the best, if not the best quality sushi in the world (quality of the fish), which is why as another poster said, some of the more "expensive" restaurants you may like will fly it in (that WOULD up the cost considerably, but that same fish would be fresher and cost LESS in Japan!). When you eat local, you get fresher and cheaper foods. That's true everywhere. And the types of fish used in sushi are not naturally local to NYC. Thus: quality is diminished. Nowhere on the East coast of the U.S. could rival Japan in quality of sushi-grade fish locally. That's just geography.

Also: Trying to claim American sushi is the "real" sushi is as silly as trying to claim American pizza or American Mexican food are the "real" versions, and, yes, is a pet peeve of mine. Now, granted, I like Tex Mex better than Mexican food (though I like both), and I love me some Chicago style pizza, but let's not pretend it is the same thing. So, if you get a sushi roll with fried chicken in it or something and it's divine, that's lovely, but it's totally fusion food and not simply traditional sushi.

The whole thing started when you made a blanket statement about how all east coast sushi sucks. I've noticed through several threads that you make very quick, misguided assumptions about different subjects based on very little actual experience. Not sure if that's a cultural thing but it's definitely an ignorance thing.

And here you go again, trying to proclaim Japanese sushi the best while making a blanket generalization that all other food is substandard. Again, your opinions do not reflect hard facts, they're opinions which most other people probably don't agree with.

It's kind of ignorant to assume that all sushi gets imported from Japan. In reality almost none of it is.

Weren't you the one claiming to dine at the top Sushi's spots in NYC? And you are calling who "ignorant"? :lmao::lmao: If you are in fact, someone who dines at Masa or Karamu, you would know this. Who said that "all sushi" gets imported from Japan? Did I? No. These top restaurants get their supply for their most authentic (whatever that is) dish, from Japan.

Besides, wouldn't it make YOU also a tad bit ignorant to make such blanket statements? You are saying that the "best chef's in the world" are in NY and the "best sushi in the world" are in NY? Maybe your world? The "World" is pretty ample. Ever tried Russian Cuisine? Turkish? Traditional Egyptian? There is more to food than raw fish, my friend!

Philly- take note. Stay off the "stuff a h*e foundation" type dates. Do you smoke? Plenty of chicks would rather spark up. You'd be surprised. :o:lmao: (shyte but then the munchies... That's a problem. It's about to to get real). Never mind! *disclaimer* Mimolicious does not smoke.

This thread is something. It started as a rant by a guy who was upset because he had to pay for his date, but turned into to a debate about which city has the best sushi. I like a good debate as much as anyone, but you're arguing about sushi, really?

Its really kind of subjective anyway. NYCguy may love the taste of NY sushi and find Japanese sushi to be lacking a certain something.

And Zengirl might feel strongly that the country where sushi originated obviously has the best.

Neither is right or wrong, it all depends on what you like.

Me, I like the JB roll they make at the local supermarket. Hey, its fresh and I'm Jewish, so pretty much anything with cream cheese will taste good to me. :p

Good points. One of my biggest pet peeves is when people make silly generalizations based on lack of information.

Actually, most food critics are locals, so you're already off base from the start.

Not always. I think you have a problem (besides being arrogant), with limiting your knowlegde to what YOU only know. There is a whole world out there. Which you actually acknowledge since you used "most", then how "off-based" am I? This is comedy.

Food critics travel the world, tasting FOOD! That is a lot of "local" territory , uh!?:)

East Coast sushi does suck, but it's not the quality of the chefs or anything other than simply geography. The East Coast of the United States, geographically, sucks for sushi, relative to the places with the best sushi. That's just true. As I said: local foods are fresher and better, and it's not a local food. So, the best sushi-grade fish has to travel farther, thus losing flavor and freshness, to get here. When we can teleport food instantaneously, this will no longer be true.

I'm not making misguided assumptions. I'm an East Coast gal. That's where I live and grew up. I've also lived other places, with better sushi that have better access to sushi-grade fish that is closer and fresher. I'm not calling other food substandard, except by comparison. Again: geography. It's like saying you can get better clams in Kansas than New England. It's just silly.

In a way, your comments are even less-informed than zengirl's, given that at least she is stating an opinion which even she knows can be wrong, while you are just throwing out random "facts" that are most definitely misguided.

For the record, the sushi sold in the food court at the college I went to was one of the most disgusting things I've ever eaten.

I have a question about this statement:

I grew up in sushi culture

I am not aware that there was such a thing as "sushi culture." Does this mean that you grew up in Japan?

There are several competitions for sushi masters, and in my limited research, I found that all the winners I looked at were in fact Japanese, whether they happened to live in London, Sausalito or Osaka.

My point exactly. Making misguided blanket statements based on very limited experience. If it's one thing that I learned via simple life experience, it's that when you make broad generalizations about something you don't know much about, you're usually wrong.

My father travels to New York sometimes for work, he has yet to find any Arab restaurants in that city that measure up to the food he had growing up in Syria. So clearly, the "best chefs in the world" can't make good Fattoush or Kibbeh.

You know NYC get off your high-horse buddy. Who are you to really tell other people that their knowledge is based on "nothing"? Don't be ridiculous and so arrogant. Leave the competitive and arguing to chicks, suits them better. ;)

Last I checked God didn't leave you in charge of the food court!

C'est La Vie, my friend!

Claiming that most food critics are international and then providing no supporting evidence whatsoever is a "fact" based on nothing. You can have ignorant opinions like zengirl and still have a semi-lucid argument, but claiming to be the ultimate authority of something based on erroneous detail that you pass off as "fact" is both arrogant and misguided.

Well, I know a damn lot about sushi. And a lot about where to order the best types of different kinds of foods. I'm a foodie, as I said. I think you just have blinders as to NYC. Are you one of those people who thinks NYC has the best everything? Newsflash: NOWHERE has the best of everything.

Or is it that you really don't dine at the "most exclusive best Sushi spot in the world"? What are random facts? Because if you really dined at such places you would know what you are talking about. You are saying these are the top places in "the world", maybe you meant "NYC"? Yet, as I stated the Sushi is imported, which you argue it is not. So do you dine there or not? You seem to have an issue with Japanese Sushi from Japan, uh? What about from some fish farm out in LI or someone's tank. GTFO!

That's his opinion, not anyone elses, he does not dictate what is good food for anyone else besides himself. If I went to Syria and said that the restaurants there suck that doesn't make me the authority on Arab food either. Just like proclaiming that Japanese sushi is best and the East Coast sucks wouldn't make me the authority on sushi either.

Exactly. Japanese sushi included. I'm pretty sure there are lots of restaurants in Japan that serve poor sushi. It sounds like you have something against Americans to have such as strong opinion that everything sucks here.

I never said there weren't bad restaurants for sushi in Japan (in fact, I said there were a few, and they weren't the cheapest, if you read everything I said). I simply said they had the best quality. Meaning: the best sushi quality fish in the world is found there, so you can get the best sushi there if you go to the right restaurant.

I'm an American. I've got nothing against Americans as long as they aren't overly ethno-centric, and that goes for every country.

Taste by definition is subjective. Even a 5 year old knows that. If you don't understand that simple concept, much less be able to provide supporting evidence to misguided comments that you pass off as "facts", then your comments hold no weight at all.

Also: There aren't LOTS of restaurants in Japan that serve poor sushi because they couldn't stay in business since Japanese people are, naturally, pickier about sushi than other cultures. Just as you don't find loads of crap wine in Italy or France. No one would buy it.

Where did I say most food critics are "international"? Is that the same as "travel the world". Oh, good to know!!! Didn't know both meant the same. Learn something new every day! Thanks NYC! ;)

So where is your fact backed up with all that "support" on those local critics? Is that also a fact based on "nothing" and "erroneous details" as well? You are hilarious! :lmao::lmao:

We must be drinking out of the same arrogance water then.
