Is it "inappropiate" for a guy to have his shirt off (when it's a casual setting)?

The girls I rock climb with laugh at guys (physically fit, ripped, muscular) who have their shirts off while climbing or those they see on campus walking around. Its not that the guys look ugly with their shirts off; but to my friends, they say it comes off as being full of themselves and feeling they need to show off to boost their self-esteem. They said that someone who has to show off his muscles like that probably has nothing else to offer and probably has the intellectual capacity of a neanderthal man.

Now, according to research done by OkCupid with their profile pics of guys with their shirts off, they concluded that women actually respond more to men with their shirts off then on (Right below having an animal in your pic). But, they note that abs have a short shelf life in terms of age. The higher the age of the subject, the less abs impact response rates.. As people get older they are looking for more then just looks. I provided a link if you want to see their information.

Personally, I would say leave the shirt on unless you are in a situation where it is acceptable to come off. (pool, beach, shirts and skins).

Right. So jealous guys with bodies that aren't as ripped don't like it. Just like out-of-shape women talk smack about fit women in bikinis.

Most of the flak in this thread is coming from men. And what are the women doing? We are asking you to make good on your offer to post pics. :bunny:

Men don't want to see you shirtless, and women (for the most part) do.

Just like women don't want to see other women walking around in their bikini tops, and men (for the most part) do.

Yeah, most women say they don't like dudes with muscles showing them off.

But, ever actually watch that woman when a guy with a 6-pack walks by?

She is 100% eye-raping him.

and if he stopped to talk to her I can promise you she wouldn't say "as if, cave-man" and walk on by.

Do you love feminine hygiene ads as much as we do? All that dancing! All that outsmarting of nasty Mother Nature! All that cavorting on the beach with a golden retriever! And yet, bizarrely, not everyone seems to share our love of the genre. This week, Kimberly-Clark rolled out its U by Kotex brand of tampons, pads and panty liners with a TV spot that deconstructs its predecessors so smartly and sassily that young women in North America seem to be receiving it with the same gratitude shown to Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty.

I choked on my cheese and crackers at this one.

To be honest, I only dislike seeing obvious steroid cases shirtless.

when you lift, you are part of a brotherhood & you recognize the hard work & dedication it takes to reach that level of fitness.

I've posted my progress pics before. I'll dig up the link & post it for you. :)

Ruby is right. We guys don't mind a bimbo type woman with a nice figure showing her ass and boobs. Why should women be upset when a bimbo man does the same?

I love a man who cares for his body. I wish it was appropriate for me to walk around without a shirt too... I would totally flaunt myself. I wanna see a pic of this guy...

Please keep your shirts on!

(p.s. where I live, women can go shirt/topless if they choose; however, except maybe for Pride parades and the odd beach goer, not many women have chosen to opt out of their tops!)

It is completely appropriate within the confines of my email inbox if you want to flaunt it there.

I love how this thread has gone all pervy.

OP, you threw out the pic bait and vanished. What a clit tease.

Why are you still asking for a shirtless pic? There are so many sites you can go to get the whole enchilada ............so to speak?

It's the principle of the matter!

And I can't see Flipper's bod anywhere but here.

I almost spit my water all over my laptop.:lmao:

That statements makes me think of of an old pervy guy telling a hot young feminist chick that its "unfair that she has to cover up her chest when men don't have to".

Then he proceeds to take of his shirt and says "men and women should be equal! You should take of your shirt of too , it's the principle of the matter!"

Yeah. I have  more times than I can count at guys on this site hounding women for pictures. Now you see how annoying it is. ;)

I know you must get a lot of PMs form unsavory characters. It is just an unfortunate truth of the internet.

Actually, all the PMs I've gotten on here have been from sweet and cool people. :)

While getting my CS degree, I worked as a network tech...

Are you flirting with me? ;)

I have a preference towards men who are generally clothed, frankly, but I don't think it's altogether tacky if:

*You're at the beach or pool.

*You're playing some kind of sport.

*It's a BBQ or informal outdoor event and other people have a similar wardrobe (I'm still against it, personally, but I'm fairly conservative), and it's legitimately hot outside.

*You're hanging around your own house, informally, and it's legitimately hot inside.

*You're doing yardwork or any sort of work in your own personal yard or shed.

Or something akin to that. Personally, I associate public shirtlessness (outside of watersports/boating/pools/etc, where every guy goes shirtless) with a lower class, less educated guy. That's not saying it's always the case, but if I saw a guy randomly shirtless, and you asked me what I thought he did for a living/his level of education, the immediate stereotype would be rather blue collar. Which isn't my thing. So, it'd be a bad first impression. And I also think it just looks kinda weird.

In REALLY public places where it's downright inappropriate, it's just creepy. This includes walking down the street with your shirt off, which I will never understand.

Posted

To be honest, it kind of stinks of insecurity to me. I too have a nice body, but I'd feel a bit narcissistic strutting down the street with my chest bared all the time.

I just wear figure complimenting shirts and show that I have a good sense of fashion (well, for a man). Special people get to see the goods...

Why, hello there.

Back on topic though, I don't get it when I see men walking around the Loop (downtown) with no shirts anymore than when I see a girl walking around the same area with a bikini top on. But I find it super weird when I see a guy in any area strutting like damned Foghorn Leghorn with their chest all poked out. I don't care how buffed or ripped or whatever they call it now you are, you look really silly walking around begging for attention.

Jesus, a clit tease? What a mental image. Is that something chicks say in confidence to each other? Or it is just you being you? :D

It's kind of funny, we don't think anything of a woman with a nice body in the summer wearing something to show off her assets. We encourage women to do it! But it's tacky if a guy wants to show off his body? Sure in some settings it is. Like those cheesy pictures that some guys will take online with their shirt pulled up to their pecks while they pose infront of some mirror. But if you are just hanging out with your buddies in the yard drinking beer? I don't think that's a big deal. But if you are walking around town shirtless and about to go into a bar, that is a little tacky. And this coming from a girl that LOVES a nice pair of shoulders and arms. I guess it also depends on what kind of women you want to attrack. Just like when girls where more revealing outfits and it attracks a different type of guy.

You can apply all of my comments to a gal walking around in a bathing suit, and I'd find her downright trashy if she were walking around topless here, as it's against the law.

Hey, since it grabbed your attention, I'm glad I said it. ;) I have heard the expression before, but not too often.

Topless, yes. However, usually people see less of a problem with women revealing more of their bodies. I'm not talking about going topless for women since going topless for men is usually considered less sexual for obvious reasons. I'm just talking about a general show of skin women probably display more than men on any given day.
