I have been reading A LOT on numerous forums about plain and average looking women but have never seen discussions on what this exactly entails. I would like some defining terms. I know there is the expression "beauty is in the eye of the beholder," and I've also read that many people agree on what facial and body features make a woman beautiful, but, believe it or not, there is much discrepancy on the terms "plain" and "average."

To start with:

I've seen two broad definitions of "average." One is simple--being in the middle. In cruder terms, a "5."

The other definition refers to symmetrical facial features. In only one Internet page have I ever found a picture of what it means. It doesn't refer to having two eyes and two ears and two nostrils and one mouth underneath the nose, because everyone has those (unless there is a birth defect or accident.) Rather, it refers to the distance/ratios between the top and bottom of the head. This is what I am referring to:

You can click on the five faces with the superimposed mask to see what I mean.

As for plain, I have seen three definitions:

1. What I call the classic or Jane Austen definition--round face, small features, straight thin hair. Probably flat-chested or small-breasted.

2. A newer definition--doesn't wear makeup or fix her hair and wears simple clothing.

3. The most recent definition--overweight. (I still don't know how plain equals overweight.)

One final note: I've also seen discussions started by women who complain they are ugly, and then post their photos. But the photos are ridiculous! So often the girl or woman has posted a photo where she's only half-facing the camera, has her hair hanging over her eyes and nose, or she is making a face by crossing her eyes and sticking out her tongue. Then she asks why people think she is ugly!

Okay, start yelling or being sarcastic.

cool link.

and yeah, yawn chicks who post 'myspace pics' and fish for compliments. dime a dozen.

the other day, some girl asked my boyfriend's opinion on some "photography" she had taken: a picture of her trout pouting and squeezing her arms (and breasts) together taken in a mirror at the gym with her cell phone....

I think average women/men are simply those you may tend to over look. Simply because you're not attracted to them visually, and there's nothing wrong with that, because different people prefer different things.

In my opinion there are no such things as an average woman. All women are different. Some are similar but different.

Have you ever seen movie stars in person? Most look plain or average without special hair, makeup, clothes, lighting. If plain and average women made an effort, they could look just as good or even better.

I don't know, OP, I have never called a person, man or woman, average just because they're average-looking. ;) But eh, semantics aside, I would call an average looking person someone who looks, well, average, within the mid 50% of the population. And a plain person someone who does not do much for their looks.

Yeah, because all of us have the money , time and inclination to spend hours and millions (literally) on professional makeup artists and hairstylists, cosmetic surgery, fashion advisors and new clothes everyday.

Oh, wait, you didn't know movie stars do that?

Movie stars, models, etc, will always look generally better (although not necessarily more attractive to the individual man) than women who do not make their living out of their appearance. There are exceptions, of course, but in general people are always better in their chosen career than people who are just doing it as a hobby. The same applies to appearances.

Uh, some do. But a good portion are truly beautiful. You can easily separate the two types.

But they dedicate a lot more time than the average woman can to being in shape and maintaining beauty, as Elsywth said.

I agree, they may look not so hot in comparison to their "after" shots, but they still have the classically attractive face. None of us look **** hot coming out of our houses without the time to put makeup on and unable to tackle the sunlight without that morning coffee, which is when those stupid "celebrities are just like us!" shots are taken.
