I had a para-umbilical hernia and was operated on last Tuesday. The hernia is gone now, and I can hear my tummy rumbling lots since. I feel a lot better inside now that things appear to be moving around more freely. The wound is seeping a little so I saw my GP yesterday and was prescribed antibiotics.

Thing is, I'm constipated. Previously I would have pushed and grunted while on the loo, but obviously doing that will endanger the healing of the wound. Anyone here had a similar experience? What did you do?

Perhaps you can ask your doctor about taking Colace (stool softener). Also drink lots of water and eat foods that help to soften/speed things up.

Anesthesia and narcotic pain meds can reeeeeally slow things down.

I recommend magnesium supplements, one 250 mg tablet a day - all natural, no crazy spasms or uncomfortable movements like with a laxative or softener. Be sure to drink lots of water too. :)

my dad had the same surgery and the same problem.

He ate a lot of prunes and cut out foods that can contribute to constipation for a while.

and Star is right pain meds can slow things up.

Thanks all. I've been drinking lots of water since you suggested it and feel better. More green veg (esp. broccoli) if magnesium is good for it.
