What does rape have to do with this? As horrible a crime as rape is most men are not rapists.

I certainly am having fun with this thread. I don't think I would call it informative, but it's helping time pass on this slow day at work. Prolly is still not a word though.

Prolly is what happens when a procrastinator and a trolley meet.

I agree but it is not hard not to look at guys like Jack The Wino and somehow think that they are the ones winning in life when I compare it to how many hard working and law abiding husbands I know get treated. He isn't right at all but it is sad that society rewards people like him.

Jack the Wino probably passes out free beer for everyone.

Free beer?

Where does Jack The Wino live, anyhoo?

My response is not about how all of what the thread started with, how it's wrong/right, or whatever else is in between. What I will say is that this is true to an extent. Women, like men, however, grow up. To answer the proverbial question "Why women like bad boys" is because as children/teens, women are more disciplined by parents to not be bad. We are acting out our own wants and needs to be bad through the bad boy who does have the prison record, no job, in trouble, etc.

Men, just like women, say that they do not want trash. But they have to grow up too. They will have their fun with bad girls, strippers, etc. before they realize that this is not what they want either. Women can and will change, so will men, as we get older. Unfortunately it comes with a lot of hard lessons, like everything in life.

I think this thread is mostly in jest, but it is actually pretty shocking to see just how many women go for losers and turn down decent men.

One of my co-workers was talking to this one girl at work. This guy is in great shape, is intelligent, makes good money, and is respectful. She ended up ditching him for another co-worker in another department that can't speak proper English, is disrespectful, is a deadbeat dad, is out of shape, and is always broke.

pt proven.

Pray tell.....what is it you feel Jack the Wino and guys like him are winning?

Someone please put me out of my misery if I find myself marveling over the life of a person known as Jack The Wino with anything close to envy because I've clearly hit rock bottom.

He genuinely does seem happy in life and seems to have very little stress. He lives day by day and the margins of society and has no desire whatsoever to change it. I don't desire his life but when justifies it he actually makes sense. He says he has everything he needs to be happy and I believe him.

Compare this to the respectable people I know who mostly miserable and stressed almost to the breaking point.

It's somewhat true and it is somewhat not.

I have been back and forth on that side of the track and have known many who have been there (my husband included). It does seem that that life is not stressful, easy come, easy go and easy come again.

It is hard to articulate but essentially: life slips through their fingers daily. And the average lifespan for a transient/homeless is only 40.

Many (like 99%) are afflicted with heavy trauma that they have had since childhood that causes them not to be able to function and fit in with regular life. Their capacity to handle stress is not high enough, period. And whatever addiction that they have to deaden the shame/alone feelings only short-circuits their ability to handle stress further.

Their bodies are under constant stress as well.

When I lived outdoors it was not like camping for a couple of nights, it takes quite a toll on you day to day and you don't even recognize it until you are sleeping inside again. You can wake up refreshed, unlike outside where you rarely wake up refreshed in any way. Often (in fact almost every other day) a cop or two will wake you up and run your name etc etc. (Less often in the States then in Canada I might add).

The reason I mention the stress capacity is because simply put, those who can handle better, often desire to do so.

Being homeless was fun and freeing at the same time but then after a little outer rebellion and making crazy money, you realize that there is no room for advancement, fulfillment and no real break from it. You either are or you aren't. There isn't much of an in-between there. There are no vacation days and it is very tedious being treated by sometimes the hundreds of people you interact with daily as either the Devil or an Angel or sometimes as an object of curiousity but rarely as a human being.

It isn't condusive to family life or to relationships. The primary bonding comes from having the same addictions as those that you hang out with. Addictions rarely foster any type of long-lasting bond. You are far more likely to keep a drinking buddy than a girlfriend. What's sad to me is how many of the old home bums are actually deadbeat parents.

Pamhandling can be interesting, fun and addictive in itself for awhile. It is like gambling, getting a random reward etc. But it really just becomes tedious and feels like never enough. As well, since you live day to day (bums aren't known for keeping savings accounts open) it becomes kind of an empty activity just to fill up enough to get your fix. Your life just becomes ---> fix, panhandle, fix, panhandle, hang out with your friends in the park,-----> panhandle-----> fix. And since you don't know much else, you really don't end up doing much else.

Entertainment or breaking the routine becomes dependent on others altogether. Many places won't serve you either. Not even a stupid coffee.

Bottle bums kind of have it the worst. They don't tend to pan and don't even seem to realize that it isn't exactly a skilled profession. So they have their little route in their own neck of the woods, scrapping over whose corner and whose dumpster is whose.

The thing is that this guy isn't homeless. He can afford to buy a house but he rents an apartment at a motel for the summer than travels in his RV for the winter. He can afford to buy a house but he chooses not to.

What does he do though? I guess my mind filled in the blanks quite differently.

An unlicensed pharmacist as well as some other things. I am pretty sure you know what I mean and no I don't condone it.

Ha ha, when does he go in for his Final Exams? ROFL.

Known a few of those too. Never tried anything myself. Guess I was kind of an oddity out there. Actually I know I was an oddity out there.

Makes sense, and actually it makes far more sense for him to not keep a permanent residence given his line of work.

Posted

He makes a killing at the clubs down here plus with regular junkies. The reason he goes away in the summer is because this town is dead and there is no money to be made. I don't condone it at all but it's a damn shame in this country that people like him make good money while for many honest and hardworking people life is a daily struggle.

Yes, agreed.

Many people that make money "legally" make a killing but their businesses are totally unethical and even harmful. Bastards.

Very much agree. We live in a society that rewards having no morals and getting yours at the expense of others.

Little girls want this. Women don't want this.

Look for women, not girls.

Posted

Look, guys who do time, don't have careers &c. also tend to be spontaneous and are easy to understand. That's what appeals to many women. The urge to nurture, dropping your guard / rationalism when faced with a hurt person, coupled with a man whose not afraid to make a move and will f*ck like an animal is very appealing to some.

Make of that what you will. If you want that life, go for it.

Okay, so apparently he's a drug dealer (I've never heard of this guy) and that's uncool. Though depending on what he's dealing, not really less uncool than plenty of legal jobs. (I'm anti-drug myself, but I know a pot dealer who's a really nice guy, and I cannot really see his 'vocation' as an issue, since the reasons pot is illegal are kind of B.S. and it's better for you than half the stuff doctors try to push on people. /randomly libertarian drug rant). If he deals to kids, that's REALLY uncool. /end teacher rant.

However, in THIS description (bolded), it's all about mindset. Anyone can do that, and perhaps more people should. You can live day by day and work a respectable job. I would say that 90% of the time, I live day by day. I visit the future in my mind on occasion to set up a quick 401K or sketch out some goals, but I never let my goals take me away from the present. All those miserable people you know---they probably aren't mindful and can't be present, and if they WERE, they could easily find happiness in productive lives. Nobody NEEDS to get caught up in the Rat Race. We choose to or not.

So, what you're talking about here is perhaps someone who has good features (he can live in the moment) and bad features (he's a creepy drug dealer) and he maximizes what he can get from the good ones. Just imagine how much BETTER living in the moment could be for someone who's NOT a creepy drug dealer. :D
