So perhaps you can find ways to take money off the table and make it about caring for one another instead. Lower-cost alternatives to going out are one way to nip that problem in the bud. Why your BF told you all the stuff he did for his ex, though, I have no idea. That seems like a crappy thing to share. Do you have any idea why he did that? Seems very passive-aggressive to me - like him asserting his independence or something. These are probably things worth exploring in more depth.
