Your point?

My point is you could probably do more than just your job if you really want to make a big difference.

I never said I didn't volunteer. One can always do more. You can sell all your possessions and send the money to that African family. I, however, did make the choice to forgo a lucrative career in technology or finance making $200k ( as several peers do) to make significantly less helping others full-time, so I have a clear conscience. I'm sure aside from doing that 60 hrs a wk I could volunteer 3 times a month, but I have a sick family member to help care for and a life to lead. Besides, I'm not the one who watched CNN and had a reality check.

You're right, perhaps you should be preaching about it. I mean you volunteer 3 times a month!

I didn't preach about it. I was just posting that what I saw on television, hit ME hard. I do volunteer and I don't think it matters how much or how little, but I do it when I can. :)

So you get "paid", that is a job. That isn't volunteering.

I don't think it's right to judge him like that.

If he helps others than great! The more the merrier! If he gets paid? Even better!

I don't think the motives should matter really as long as he helps others.

And if you also help, it's great as well! But the fact you aren't getting paid for it doesn't mean its worth more...

I salute you both, Sanman and CatNTheHat. But I agree w Professor X.

You dont need to take ****ty pay to have a conscious. The people who took the $200k job have just as clear a "conscious" as you do I am sure. They also apparently have more time (40 hr/wk jobs) to volunteer and "significantly" more funds to help out with giving and caring for sick family members then those that chose the low paying career opportunity with the high work weeks.. But I guess that works too.

Listen, I could argue that the number of hours I work weekly at times exceeds the numbers of hours you work and volunteer combined. However, that is not constructive and this is not about that. My point was that this should not about African families walking the desert. Sure it is sad, but there is little to be done about that. The goal should be for people to help out when they can in whatever way they can in their communities. Paid or not.

Lol that you think these guys only work 40 hrs/wk. I don't know anyone who does that. I never said that they don't do good things as well. I said that I am comfortable with the contributions I make.

I posted about something that effected me, and if you didn't like it you didn't have to respond. thats all I'm going to say about it.

Well when you make comments like the "champagne socialism" one, it comes across that you are trying to be an arsehole.

I never said I didn't like it. I simply asked how it had changed your perspectives and behaviors. You are the one who assumed I did not like it and was not affected by it. Re-read the thread.

Talking about how the poor Africans affected you and then not attempting to make changes in society is champagne socialism. That is why I first asked you how it changed you and if you planned to do anything about it. If you did not, then what was the point of the thread. It certainly is not about dating. I was not the one affected, so I fail to your point. I chose a career where I could help make the positive changes that are important to me in society. The question was about whether you plan to do the same.

Well its nice to meet you. :)

It just seemed like you were trying to imply that those individuals who chose 200k jobs as evil or greedy, while you portrayed yourself as some sort of saint for taking the significantly less paying job that still works you 60hrs/wk. I was simply defending those "peers" that perhaps considered taking the higher wages to support more contributions and open up more funds to giving to those in need.
