Hahah. But this is a serious thread.

My hair is very fine, and curly/kinky. It doesn't "fro" but it looks a lot shorter than it is. It will never naturally look long (currently it's shoulder length or a bit longer, but when it dries it shrinks up to about chin length.)

I'm bored of my hair but I refuse to cut it. Sure, I could have it flat-ironed but that's an expensive as well as losing proposition as it rains a lot here. Same with straighteners, and those make my hair break off. I would love to have hair like this but it would never look like that without extensions. Are extensions as tacky as wearing a wig?

Oh and btw my BF has hair that is longer than mine, well past his shoulders. I love it but am a bit jealous. :p

I wear them from time to time. Nothing wrong with them. I love the ponytail one because when I want to go out and it's 115 outside I just pull my hair back and put it in.

It matches so closely you can't even tell it's not my real hair. Who are you trying to deceive? You're just trying to look your best IMO.

And the difference between this and makeup is... ?

One of my closest girlfriend's went over to her new beau's house wearing extensions. He asked how her hair grew so fast, she was honest. He was okay with it...until he found her "hair" on his living room floor!

I've had hair extensions (fusion since, unfortunately, my white-Japanese scalp is the wrong kind for a weave), and my BF at the time didn't like them because fusion extensions have that little bump you feel in each extension if you run your hands through it; you have to used a special brush and such. But he never felt "lied" to. That seems silly. Nor did anyone else, really---I totally told people all the time they were extensions. Except for those who'd seen the dramatic difference in length within a day or two, most people were surprised, so I guess I "lied" to strangers. But I don't know why it matters. I'm assuming you'd get a weave, so I'm not sure if you'd have the "run your fingers through my hair" problem or not.

I also have Asian straightening in my hair to keep it from going wavy. And chunky chestnut colored highlights! :) So I guess I'm just okay with lying with my hair.

As a hairstylist I have to warn you that extensions can be particularly tricky for curly/kinky hair.

It's near impossible to find extensions that have the same kind of curl as your hair. So unless you plan on straightening your hair every day (which you've already said you don't want to) or curling your extensions every day (which probably will still not look anything like your natural curl, less and less so as the day goes on and the curl falls out), it's not really a viable option.

Just my $.02. :)

Could she straight-perm her hair?

Absolutely...but considering the example photo she posted, I assumed that is not the look she is trying to achieve.

I just use the clip in hair extensions. One, because I'm cheap and two because I don't always want a lot of hair on my back. I put my hair up a lot living in Arizona so this option works for me.

I have numerous wigs, and hair extensions. I like having different styles without killing my natural hair.

All the guys I've dated knew about these, I didn't keep them a secret, was never a issue for me. They also see my natural hair.

I see a difference between hair extensions and makeup, but it's purely subjective and just a feeling, I couldn't give a rational breakdown as to why. I will wear face powder, mascara, lip gloss, but I am averse to fake tans, acrylic nails, and hair extensions.

That's just me, though, and honestly I'm one of those who has naturally thick long hair and strong nails, so I'm maybe coming from a place of privilege and could easily feel otherwise. Anyway, I have friends who have weaves or go get spray tanned, and I don't look down on them for it or think they're tacky--although I would probably laugh a little bit if it was a bad weave that looked awful, or if they turned themselves into an orange oompa loompa. It's just a different choice, and I do sometimes envy their freedom to change their hair so drastically at a moment's notice.

Same here. I'm not deceptive; if you're sleeping with me, you know what you're getting into. I think there are looks that are tacky, not methods.

I've seen extensions that essentially replaced the hair (real hair is braided down close to the scalp and extensions are tied into the braids.) Perhaps this would be a better option.

I used to straighten my hair a long time ago, but my hair is very fine and it won't survive chemicals well - it will start breaking off.

I dunno. My hair is my life-long struggle. It's been longer and looked good but it took tons of money, time, chemicals, heat and a wonderful hairstylist who knew exactly what to do.

Oh, and this is a better picture of what I'd love my hair to look like - but not as long as the gal in the picture. My natural hair looks somewhat like that when it's wet (but much shorter). When it dries... boing!

I wear hair extensions sometimes but they mostly add volume to my thin hair rather than length. My hair is already pretty long so the extensions I have only add another inch or so of length. My husband knows that I have them (clip-in ones), but he doesn't always know when I'm wearing them. I think he just thinks that somedays my hair looks extra good. My hair has a natural wave to it but I straighten it & wear straight extensions. I haven't ever seen extensions that look like the pics you posted, but then again I only have experience with the clip-in ones you can buy anywhere. I think they are fun!

 What in the world was it doing on his living room floor?! That's gotta be a great way to freak a guy out. lol.

Wearing them around guys can be tricky because even if they know they are there, it's still kinda awkward when they try to touch your hair & there are bumps from the track.

OliveOyl, I'm also jealous of my husbands hair!! It's so much thicker & nicer than mine!

Although I don't know what your hair looks like, I can tell you that the girl in that picture had quite a bit of product on her hair.

If you say that's what your hair looks like when wet, you can probably retain a lot of the look by using a gel to add some weight to the hair.

i used to wear them when i had shorter hair, i thought it was a very fun way to experiment with diff looks. nothing wrong with that! i even tried diff colored extensions like blue and orange etc... its all fun :)

Black women here simply put cornrow extentions in their hair and then sew the weave in.:rolleyes: Kissandmakeup makes no sense at all!

Uhhh...sorry? I didn't know she wanted a weave. I think of "extensions" as being fusion, clip-in, glued-in, or beaded in. All of which mean they'd be blended with (and an "extension" of) the natural hair. I think of weave as, well...weave. It basically replaces (rather than simply extends) the natural hair.

I agree that a weave would be a viable option for the OP.

A lotta making out, apparently. There was a couple on the floor, and one on his couch.

They'd been dating about a month before she showed up with magically longer hair, and knew what they were (extensions), and they did have a good laugh about it (they're both very slapsticky ;)), but I do wonder if he thought for a minute, "If she's gonna have fake hair, I wish it would...stay on."

Sooooooo many girls I know use extensions though.

I didn't know the correct terminology, thanks for clearing that up, kamu.

I don't know what I want. I just want to get out of this hair rut without cutting it short, which has been my usual temptation. You're right though, extensions probably wouldn't work well at all. A weave might, but hmmm...

That reminds me of when I was dating this guy when I was in my 20s. I met him at a club, he was pretty young too, and he was HOT. We went out on a few dates and wound up in bed. I was running my hands through his thick hair when suddenly...

... it started to lift up...

It was a toupee. I had no idea until then...

If you've never had a weave before, a word of warning: they hurt!

My beauty school class was pretty diverse and one of the black guys was an absolute artist with weaves (he had been doing them long before going to school). He decided he wanted to weave everyone in our class and take photos for his portfolio. My wimpy head did not last more than 24 hours with that thing in...ho-ly CRAP it hurt like hell. It looked fantastic, but after one night of trying to sleep with it in, I was begging him to remove it for me.

But I also have black friends who get them done every few weeks...and wouldn't have it any other way! So I guess it's all what you're used to!

I have always been told they hurt on the wrong type of hair and particularly scalp. I can't deal with a weave either (Asian hair; I'm white/Japanese). I really don't know. But I have some black and Latina friends who say they don't hurt at all and can't remember them hurting.

No different than buying a padded bra or wearing spanx as far as I am concerned.:p

I used to pay THOUSANDS of dollars to put bonded extensions in my hair- The same brand jennifer Aniston used to use. It ruined my hair- so I use clip in extensions now. My hair is below my shoulder blades- but thinner than I like it. I bought clip in extensions for 150$- it's real hair, and it matches my own hair perfectly. No one knows I wear them unless I tell them.

The black girls have a saying at work they love to throw at me- "Even the white girls need the weave to achieve"....

Get decent extensions. Try it and then decide if you like it.
