If a girl were to say she was wearing a dress and heels on a date in the city, what would be an appropriate thing for a guy to wear to be neither over nor underdressed...?

Posted

Jeans and a nice button down shirt work well in my opinion.

I'd up the ante a little bit. A button-down shirt, tucked in, with belted trousers. And non-sneaker shoes.

A tuxido and a very large top hat but it must be no larger than Abe Lincoln's top hat.

LOL. He said not dressed up and not casual. Inbetween. That's SUPER dressed up and also from the past.

Depends on where you are going. Jeans with a nice polo shirt or dress shirt (tucked in) could be appropriate depending on what the plans are. Slacks may be required. I like guys in polo shirts, so maybe I'm biased on that :p

Hahah a tuxedo would be epic.

The only issue is that I don't like wearing nicer shoes with jeans...just doesn't look right to me, so I stick with sneaks...but I have a feeling that that'd be too casual...and I don't know if she's the fashionable type...

Just going to dinner at a reasonably nice part of the city, so it wouldn't be awkward to be dressed a little better...then who knows after that...

why can't you wear nice shoes with jeans? sneakers are WAY too casual. my vote is nice shoes, nice jeans, and a fitting polo shirt. I didn't realize this was specific to a date you have lined up!

Forget the jeans unless they are dressy. Wear slacks and a nice dress shirt. Tie is optional. Dress shoes... fresh shave and hair cut. Go easy on the cologne... most guys overdo it! Make sure your fingernails are clean and neatly trimmed.

Me in my fancy battle pants!

No jeans. This ^

And cologne.

A transvestite. Or is this a trick question?

And nice shoes! This is the safest bet, IMO, without knowing what kind of dress and heels or what venue.

Ugh, I hate khaki tuckers personally (that's what my friends and I call these) -- so yuppie. But depends on your scene.

Dress pants aren't necessarily a bad idea, but I hate them belted with a tucked-in shirt unless a guy is wearing a proper suit for some reason.

Is she a fashionable type? If so no button down shirts, those are the opposite of fashionable. agree with everything else.

Button down shirts are a staple of men's clothing and not at all out of fashion . . . ever. But there are a variety of button downs in the world between lame and cool, always.

Nice shoes with jeans is a totally normal phenomenon and reasonable.

Don't worry about what she's wearing. Just make sure what you're wearing is comfortable and is also appropriate for the restaurant you're going to.

True enough.

Disagree, or rather go ahead and wear button downs if you enjoy being friendzoned and told, "You are such a great guy, but I just don't feel any chemistry." OP I saw your pictures in your profile. Contrary to what others have said in other threads I don't think you look gay or femme at all. You do look a little too "clean cut" though, and a button down is going to make that worse. Muss your hair after letting it grow some, wear a straight collar solid color shirt (pick a shirt color that works with your skintone, I use olive and gray), lightweight wool or cotton slacks with a muted plaid or check, nice unscuffed loafers, don't smile much... profit.

I still think your idea is weird. Button down shirts come in all types. It's not like he has to wear an uber preppie 80s style one or anything. Polos actually are riskier and uncollared shirts are probably too casual for the description of date/place at hand.

Every guy I know wears button down shirts a fair amount of the time and quite frequently on dates and it does not get them "friendzoned." That's one of the silliest theories I've heard on LS in awhile. There are only a few choices of male shirts: button down, polo, T-shirt, tank (I'd say avoid this one!).

Just never ever wear a polo with a popped collar or a tank, whatever you do. :)

Levi's and a t-shirt.

There are a million variations of what a dress and heels involves. A summer dress with strappy nude heel-sandals or light colored kitten heels? Or a little black dress with Louboutins and pearls? Who knows...

So, do this:

Don't worry about what she's wearing. Just make sure what you're wearing is comfortable and is also appropriate for the restaurant you're going to.

A nice black button down shirt with dark jeans or with nice slacks.

Khaki pants...

No, no, no and no.

No, no, no and no.

Agreed.

I see those pants and I run in the other direction:p

A good pair of jeans is the way to go.

I have these black jean-like linen pants

I love guys who wear linen pants. My BF has a pair in white. Sigh.:love:

Ick. Straight collars are designed to be worn with ties. No well-dressed man is going to wear a straight collar unless he's also wearing a tie, because the collar will inevitably fall flat and he'll look ridiculous. Buttondown collars were designed to stay upright without buttoning the top button and work quite well (and until the 70s and into the 80s, buttondowns were considered too casual for business wear).

Like others have said, there's a pretty broad spectrum of heels & dresses, so it's hard to say without knowing what kind of heels & dress. If I'm going someplace nice, I always wear a sportscoat -- it can dress up an otherwise casual outfit (even jeans and tshirt), or you can easily take it off if it turns out you're overdressed. If I'm going someplace classy, I'll wear dress pants; if I going someplace trendy I'll wear jeans or some of my 'weird' pants (don't ask). Dress shoes look nice with NICE jeans; if your leather shoes look silly with your jeans, it's because you're wearing the wrong kind of jeans. (And of course it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed. ALWAYS!)

Ha! I was just about to say this but EH beat me to it. Also, it's easier to put dress shoes with nice, dark jeans than nice, light jeans, but both are do-able.

And there's a fairly broad spectrum of men's shoes emerging lately. The male version of espadrilles (they don't look like girly espadrilles so I don't know if they're called the same, but kind of hipster canvasy shoes) really do it for me lately. My BF wears those all the time. :) But just traditional leather dress shoes do look good with nice jeans.

So you don't even mention straight collar shirts? That's telling right there. Button down shirts are p-ssy repellent, OP. Remember when they told you they wanted a funny, intelligent, kind of sensitive guy and then banged the braindead, coke dealing drummer? This is the same exact thing. Wear what I posted last... profit.

First of all: To me, a straight collar shirt IS a button down shirt (it has buttons and falls under the general category as a general term; I understand the dichotomy you're trying to bring up here, but I find it odd). Though as EH said, it's one that looks good only with a tie.

FWIW, I like guys who are slightly hipster, so the short-sleeved plaid button downs are all the rage among those crowd now, but I think that'd look weird on the OP since he doesn't strike me as a hipster. But there is literally a button down shirt for almost every semi-dressy occasion and style. It's one of the safest go-to styles. As long as he doesn't tuck it into khaki pants, as Star Gazer said: no, no, no! :)
