A phone call shows that the guy "manned up" and takes it more seriously. In addition phone calls may have phone tag, but text tag is even worse. "Did they get the text? Are they planning to reply? Maybe they lost her phone/has reached the end of their monthly texting usage/never got it." However, confirming the date by text - the day before or the day of the date - is a good use of the medium.
