Sincerely, I have never been into such books, but recently something caught my eye. I read some excerpts from a book called "Brilliant parents, fascinating teachers" by Dr. Augusto Cury, and I think it has plenty of things you can apply to everyone, not only to kids. I'm gonna get that book asap. He also seems to have other interesting books as well (related to what you're looking for): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augusto_Cury

Can you be more specific? Personal development is a wide subject field.

Are you looking to alter habits of procrastination? Manage OCD? Fulfill goals? Improve your health or social skills? More information would be helpful.

Here are some I have found helpful:

  • How to Win Friends and Influence People Everyone can improve their relationships dramatically by reading this and practicing the principles. It's one to re-read throughout life. I have read it several times.
  • Radical Honesty I don't easily call things life changing, but this book was. I give it a lot of credit for me being able to communicate directly, honestly, and effectively with my dad in a way that I never did before. All my relationships have improved noticeably since I began communicating in a radically honest way -- with myself and with others.
  • Passages: Predictable Crises of Adult Life This one is from the '70s, but most of it holds true today. It's eye-opening information about what happens to most people at certain landmark ages and in common social arrangements (such as when a couple gets married and the mom stays home with the kids).
  • The Road Less Traveled This book presents the clearest, most sensible explanation of what love really is. It also explains that pain is a normal part of life, and the trick is not to avoid pain, but to learn to deal with it well.
  • A New Earth Many ideas from Buddhism are in this book. I always feel very grounded and peaceful whenever I read any passage from it.

I quite like Presence (UK) / Second Circle (US) by Patsy Rodenburg and This Light in Oneself by Krishnamurti.

Motivation is a myth, short lived & in the moment sort of thing. That's why we fail, feel like we are weak, develop self loathing. If you have a goal stay away from, "motivational" books. Write a contract, leave notes for yourself, join groups with like minded people who have similar goals & can help you & hold you accountable.
