Eternal Sunshine Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I want to lose 20lbs but would rather not if I am going to have loose skin. What do you think?
TaraMaiden Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 It depends how big you are, and what condition your skin is in to begin with. If you're colossal, then losing 20lbs may not show that much - losing 120lbs will, and yes - in all probability you may need corrective surgery to 'take up the slack' because grossly overweight people have put their skin under an extraordinary strain. When you become grossly obese, you do things to your body, no body should be subjected to. if however, you're above your ideal weight, but you look ok - and you just want to shed weight you think is a bit too much - you should be ok. Especially if you also begin to massage your skin with good-quality skin products. Bio Oil is amazing stuff. I add two drops of Frankincense oil to the bottle, (160ml) because frankincense has properties which help regenerate and preserve skin cells..... Research it. It's a great product.
Author Eternal Sunshine Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 I am within normal weight limits for my height. I just want to look better. I am 32 if that helps and plan to incorporate lots of exercise.
TaraMaiden Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Then you'll have no problem with loose skin. You'll replace fat with muscle, which will help support the skin. Also, exercise may increase your weight, because muscle weighs more than fat, mass-wise..... That is, a cupful of muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat.

That is why she will not lose 20 lbs if she replaces fat with muscle. That is also why a woman who is within her normal weight range, for an average height, should not attempt to lose 20 lbs. It will most likely put her in the underweight range, and can mostly only be done through pure starvation, as exercise is likely to restrict the weight loss.
Author Eternal Sunshine Posted June 16, 2011 Author Posted June 16, 2011 Perhaps lose 10lbs and tone up... I am near the upper limit for my height though and would prefer to be closer to the lower limit (but still normal). It's just that if would end up with loose skin, then I would rather stay as I am.
anne1707 Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 Go for slow weight loss of about 1-2lb per week (and also means you will be more likely to keep the weight off)
Afishwithabike Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 After the birth of my child several years ago, I dropped about 25 pounds. I didn't have any loose skin. I was also around your age. To get all nitpicky about it, you can't replace fat with muscle. Fat is fat. Muscle is muscle. You can't turn one into the other. However, you can shrink the fat and increase the muscle tone so that it looks like you've replaced the fat with muscle.
TaraMaiden Posted June 16, 2011 Posted June 16, 2011 I wasn't suggesting (if you're 'nitpicking' my comments ) that fat CAN be 'replaced' with muscle. I was merely indicating that weight loss will not be so evident, if the weight lost in fat, is compensated for by weight gain in muscle, through vigorous and energetic exercise. If that's what you were referring to....
dangerstranger Posted June 17, 2011 Posted June 17, 2011 I lost 50+lbs during the course of my divorce and I had no loose skin whatsoever. I didn't even develop any cellulite. I went from 160 to 105 quickly before levelling out at 120. I was 33ish at the time.
Ruby Slippers Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 If you lose gradually (no more than 1 pound a week), you should be fine.
threebyfate Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 ES, as everyone has said, slow weight loss. Work out more and cut back your calories. It shouldn't be too difficult to do and maintain, if you make this a lifestyle change.

oldguy Posted June 24, 2011 Posted June 24, 2011 I'm in my 50's, I lost over 50 pounds in about 8 months a couple of years ago & have no loose skin. I've got a couple wrinkles on my face, or as I like to call them, enhanced dimples, but again, I am in my 50's. I don't even have that neck waddle going on yet and after loosing that much weight I thought I would.
