So today, a random stranger felt the need to be completely rude to me, and told me that I should get braces. What a nice guy...

Now, I don't have a perfect straight smile, I have a tooth that pops up and is a bit funny, but my mouth is not like a train wreck.

I also often have people who compliment my smile, and who think it's cute, regardless of the imperfect alignment.

My teeth are like this girl pretty much (just my one tooth isnt that much pushed in as hers there.)

I keep them very white and clean, and I don't have any missing.

I know that we are getting much more vain today, but it made me wonder,

if I'm single, will having crooked teeth really stop my chances in getting a date?

I don't know what's going to happen with my current relationship (thats another story), but now I don't know if theres people who would look past funny/imperfect teeth?

If I were to meet someone off a dating site, would they be thrown off by my less than perfect teeth? (Its not like my photos can show them perfectly.)

Would you date someone who didn't have a great straight smile?

Never met a guy who said "man, she had teeth in her mouth that could stop traffic!"

Provided that they are not green and rotting, They should be okay.

I'm a dentist and my husband has less than perfectly straight teeth.

He won't have braces because he is a high school teacher.

I can live with it. :)

PS- I agree with you re: little quirks being cute. I tell patients that all the time.

Perfectly straight white fake teeth are a little bit yawn IMO...

I don't think the teeth in that pic are that bad. To me, a smile is important but I don't mind little quirks, in fact they may even add character to a smile. I must admit that I'm not a fan of really crooked teeth, though. That said, I understand that not everyone has the best financial situation (to afford thousands of dollars worth of orthodontia), and there's no way I'd tell some random stranger that they need braces. Ever.

I had a disgustingly huge overbite until I got braces at 13, and was made fun of so much that I never forgot it. Even though people don't seem to mind my smile now (some even like it), I still feel like the little girl who needed braces and I'm forever covering my mouth whenever I laugh or smile.

Anyway, don't feel too insecure about your smile. From the avatars you used to have, you look quite pretty, perfect teeth or not.

That guy was a jerk, don't let it get to you. As long as a woman's teeth itsn't rottting I wouldn't mind. I, myself know that braces could cost a small fortune anyway. Perfectly straight white teeth are a turn off for me I'm afraid.

I wanted to get braces, until I had a consult and they wanted to remove

wisdom teeth + other teeth. My mouth is small to begin with, I didn't want to

be left with less teeth then when I started. Plus the cost.. well right now I'm broke.

There is only two teeth in my mouth that bother me, otherwise I can live with them.

I keep my teeth very white & clean, and never have bad breath. It's just so aggrivating, as whenever someone has to make a rude comment at me out of spite, it's always aimed at my teeth.

I'm glad to see some people here wouldn't mind, gives me hope.

Says more about him than it says about you.

You're not the azz being rude to total strangers. :)

That's true, I was really shocked. Its just really bother some, as whenever someone wants to be low, they aim for my teeth.

Id never go down to that level and put someone down for their looks.

I always believed that beauty is more than skin deep, but clearly no such thing in today's society.

Sounds like things aren’t doing to well with your bf. I’m sure your teeth are fine. I’m actually a little grossed out about how perfect some people want their teeth. Seriously they have to wear a retainer the rest of their life. (at night)

Just not to HIM. Who was clearly having a very bad day to say something so mean.

Don't let him get to you. He not a good representative of the whole population.

Come on you got a free professional opinion on this thread! Smile! :D

The girl I like hated her teeth, I think she has a cute smile but she doesn't like them.

If the person likes you it doesn't matter, I'm proof of that, I would've dated her even if she had no teeth, I think I'm in the minority though, most of my friends would be put off by bad teeth.

My thoughts exactly. My sister's been doing that for almost 2 years now and she's now 19. She worries about her looks a little too much, a lost cause if I ever saw one.

Yes - the boyfriend is another story, I have no idea what's going to happen.

But this is not the thread for that. :D

I don't want perfection, but it'd be nice to not have an annoying tooth

that pops up. I wanted to cap it, but my dentist told me he wouldn't ruin

a perfectly heathy tooth for cosmetic reasons.

@sb129 I'm glad to have had your professional opinion. :D!

@Ginger What would be classified as "bad teeth" though? Many people have different opinions as to what bad teeth are. Which is why some people mock my teeth, while other's go on about how cute my smile is.

I don't mind if someone has imperfect teeth; my own teeth aren't perfect and neither are my boyfriend's. They're clean and white, and most of them are ok, but we both have a couple of wonky teeth and neither of us are bothered by it.

I think it really depends how bad your teeth are though. If someone's teeth were an absolute mess or were brown and yellow and black, I'd reconsider dating them. I once dated someone who had shocking teeth; I gave him a chance because he seemed like a nice guy, but I found out that he had no plans to fix his teeth and couldn't afford it anyway, and I just couldn't get over my horror at the state of them.

Really discoloured/lots of teeth missing/very crooked etc...

I think so anyway, none would matter if I liked the person though, although it may affect first impressions and thus attraction.

My teeth aren't shocking or super bad that someone would have to run in the opposite direction. There's just two teeth that I don't like.

Id post a picture, but for some reason the camera works in my favour and

never shows the flaws of my teeth. :lmao:

Where the pop up tooth is, another tooth is wonky on that side too.

Plus my botttom teeth arent perfect.

Maybe ill just buy those cool vampire fangs and wear them. ;)

Didn't you used to have a picture of yourself as your avatar before? I can't recall if your teeth were visible or not. :o

The teeth in your first post are fine though, quite cute to be honest.

I was thinking about this last night funnily enough, and being honest, I realised this is something of a deal breaker for me. But its one of those things I don't notice about someone unless they are significantly bad.

A little crookedness can be quirky and loveable, of course, and I think that guy must have been an absolute jerk to say that to you.

I did have a photo before. But I got tired of it.. who knows if my photo will

return as an avatar in the future. :p

Only ones that I could find that even remotely showed one of my fangs/snaggle were...

http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss330/rinasoc/Self%20Photos/jj.png

^ You can see the poped out tooth.

http://i588.photobucket.com/albums/ss330/rinasoc/Self%20Photos/baww.png

^ Hardly shows, but they are pointy.

Then I have this photo(s) of just teeth in which I cropped (as I looked halarious) to show the annoying teeth. The other tooth that bothers me is in the back.. but it cant be seen unless im smiling huge and awkwardly.

Honestly, the pictures won't show how high that fang goes (pictures

go in my favour I guess) , but its annoying as sometimes ill take pictures and it will look like I have no tooth there :@

You're gorgeous.

No need to change your teeth just on the grounds of appearance, but if they are causing you to worry or affect your confidence then that might be a reason to consider it. Also, if/when your wisdom teeth decide to make an appearance you might need to have something done - most people don't really have enough room for all their teeth at once.

I'm not a dentist, but teeth that aren't straight can, sometimes, be harder to clean (for example where one tooth partially obscures another) which can lead to things like tooth decay. It could be worth asking a dental professional if there are any disadvantages other than cosmetic to leaving things alone in your case, but you look fine. :)

Posted

They are great for chewing AND biting but I have seen or known people who can do those things without.

Posted

Your teeth are perfectly fine and wouldn't put me off dating you. It's true that the tooth you're referring to is slightly out of place, but it's a healthy white tooth all the same, and the rest of your teeth look good too. Plus you're a pretty girl, which counts for a lot - it would be much worse to be an ugly girl with perfect teeth!

If your tooth bothers you that much, get one of those invisible retainers to straighten it (you probably should have had one as a kid). It really isn't a big deal though - and someone should have told that guy it's extremely rude to criticize strangers!

Thanks oaks

I honestly just wanted to get the higher up tooth capped, I could live with

crooked bottoms. My dentist told me that he wouldn't ruin a perfectly good

tooth in order to do it. (And something about it breaking.. I don't even know.)

I honestly don't want to pay 10,000$ for braces with all the other procedures.

There's no happy medium for me.

I can clean them just fine, they aren't like a zoo in there.

.. I honestly think I'm going to buy some of those vampire fangs. It may just

make my snaggle look half normal. :lmao:
