I applied for a job at JCPenney not that far from me, right. This was some time last week. Just an hour ago I got a call and a email for a interview. I read the email which looked automated or whatever. But the phone call I got was from a real person. It sounded like a latino guy but I have no idea how old he was from the phone. Anyway he talked about my app a little bit and then asked me txt him a photo of me?

This was kinda weird so I asked him why and then he said he wants to be sure I'm the right person. I said okay and txt him a photo after he gave me his number, right. He txt me back with all these compliments on how cute I am, asking my ethnic, yada yada. He sounded friendly about it but the compliments was strange to come from a interviewer. Anyway he told me to come in tomorrow for a formal interview at 9:30 prompt in HR. He even told me what to wear.

This kinda bothered me because he wants me to wear a button-down blouse, & close-fitting dress pants w/ matching shoes & to let my hair down. I dont know what this is about but I feel weird about this. I already told my mom & sister and they dont know what to think but that I should still go because I need a job and nothing could happen because its gonna be inside a department store. I'm only 19 and never had a job yet. Does anyone think this is weird or should I expect this kind of stuff at interviews??

Sounds odd to me.

Here's the main JCP jobs page:

http://www.jcpenney.net/Careers/Stores.aspx

Mouse over the corporate contact number at bottom left and give them a call and get confirmation that this procedure is part of HR protocol. If they ask, give them any specifics on the store or local HR contact you have.

This really pissed me off.

Yea - nothing could happen in a department store....who says that? And if this guy is in some parked car looking for a girl that matches the description of what he wants you to wear....that could be dangerous.

WTF is wrong with your mother that she doesn't realize that? Jesus.

yeah, i agree, your mother and sister need to read the paper or watch the news more often or something.

open the full headers on the email, there's a "received from" line. here's an example from one of mine...

from mm-notify-out-209-59.amazon.com (mm-notify-out-209-59.amazon.com [72.21.209.59]) by mx.google.com with ESMTP id l38si549317qck.116.2011.06.01.23.17.38; Wed, 01 Jun 2011 23:17:39 -0700 (PDT)

the "from" says amazon.com with an IP address that actually checks out as being from amazon.com, so i know it's legitimately an amazon email. if the "from" in that line said anything but amazon or had an IP address that did not check out as from amazon.com, the email would be a fraud, it would just appear to be from amazon at a glance. you can google the IP address (the 72.21.209.59) to see who that address belongs to.

you'll find one of two things...

a) the email is fake, and is not from jcpenney at all (it should come from a jcpenney.com mail server)

b) the email is legitimate, and the guy who called you is some guy with access to jcpenney's HR email so he must work there, and you should notify the management of the store of what happened.

This can't be legit. JCPenny would be looking at one hell of a lawsuit if it is.

I'm wondering if someone snagged your resume and is setting you up. If you go, be super careful in the parking lot.

Better yet, call JCPenny's HR and confirm before going.

Right after the OP mentioned how this ass is telling her how cute she is, I knew it was a setup. And he probably went over your application and knows you never had a job before and wants to see how desperate you are to work there. He probably does work there and somehow got into the store's system.

You better do what everyone here says and call the store for your own safety. If nothing this guy says checks out, you better make a report of it and hang up.

The guy's weird and a sleaze. How do you know who is is? Is he remotely connected with where you applied? You need to check him out properly. Having said that, his behaviour does not sound at all appropriate. I certainly would not feel happy about texting an employer my photo like that. His comments were out of order and sleazy and he should not dictate what you wear unless there is a store uniform, which they should supply you with when you start the job. Honestly, there are red flags everywhere in this story. Do not end up on your own with him. I think I'd look elsewhere for a job and report him.

This situation is extremely dangerous - please don't put yourself at risk by attending the "interview". An interviewer would not tell you what to wear, ask for a photograph, or make comments about your attractiveness. This is definitely not legitimate.

Firstly you need to contact the HR dept at JC Penney and confirm that they have not invited you for interview (if they have invited you, then you need to make a serious complaint about the inappropriate behavior of the person who called you!). Then you need to report this incident to the police. The caller has asked you to dress in a certain way so he can identify you, and is obviously planning to do something when he sees you, either in the parking lot or in the store. Please, for your own safety do not turn up at the specified time dressed in the way you described.

Bring somebody else if you can, preferably a big strong guy... Call the HR department and notify them of this....

I cut and paste this thread for my brother to review and he laughed, then said you'd be an idiot if you fall for this nonsense, which he's right.

Steer clear. You're only 19, right? The mean Shaun, who I was not that long ago, would say go ahead and see him so he could have his way with you if he gets the chance. I don't feel like that any more after some serious reflecting. And since I'm starting to see why women are the way they are, I can empathize with some of them.

I won't exactly sympathize with any stupidity, but I will definitely try to reinforce that you be safe because you're out of work, and with the economy in the rut that it's in, you're gonna get predators trying to set up the desperate the young and the naive. Don't be any of the three.

LOL Im okay :) I called & got it straightened out I spoke to a HR lady and she told me that my app wasn't reviewed yet so yea it was a scam. I told everyone about it & they all said the whole thing was fishy. I kinda knew it so now I just gotta wait to hear back while I look for other stuff.

Ok. Be careful when they call back for an interview in case it's another scam (eg, take all the details and then call them back later via a phone number you've got from their website). Part of me wants to say "call the police", especially if it happens again.

Sweetheartt,

Let me take a moment and say it was VERY smart of you to post here regarding your concern. I'm glad you dodged a bullet with this guy :). Stay safe!

Personally, I wouldn't let it go so easily. If it were me (or my daughter or friend), I would take a copy of the email to the police and file a report. I would also inquire about having the ISP traced to find out its origin.

Did the scammer guy know you'd applied for a job at JCPenny without you telling him? If so, he must have inside information from the company itself. I certainly wouldn't let this drop. JCPenny should be explaining how confidential information about your application could have got to this guy.

I'm thinking either someone's meds ran out, or a computer was left logged in to LS when she stepped away from it, and someone else is joyriding...
