A PRISON officer hanged herself after a drug-addict serial criminal tried to blackmail her over their secret affair, it emerged yesterday.

Tragic Karen Mulliner, 36, left her husband and set up home with 20-year-old Michael Grey after he was freed from the young offenders institute where she worked.

Before she died, she scrawled a message on a mirror saying: “I’m sorry, he’s destroyed me.”

Miss Mulliner had earlier tried to end their affair after Grey stole more than £6,300 from her bank account and threatened to tell her family about their relationship unless she paid him another £10,000.

She was left distraught when he posted pictures of himself on Facebook waving wads of £20 notes he had stolen from her. She was found dead at her flat in Christchurch, Dorset. A bottle of vodka and a suicide note were nearby.

Details of the tragic events leading to Miss Mulliner’s death emerged last week when Grey was jailed for stealing £6,300 from her.

An inquest last September heard that in July, police had to eject Grey from the flat after he attempted to stab himself as their relationship came to an end. Miss Mulliner went to the police again after Grey stole the £6,300 from her.

Five days before she died, she told her council bosses in Poole, where she worked as a domestic violence support officer, that the theft was the “last straw”.

Thomas Horder, prosecuting, told Bournemouth crown court that the couple met in 2007 while Grey was in Rochester Young Offenders’Institute in Kent. “After his release, and she had left the prison service, they started a relationship.

“Miss Mulliner separated from her husband and they set up home.”

Mr Horder said that after the relationship ended Miss Mulliner told her sister about it.

He added: “She told Miss Mulliner there was a photograph of him on Facebook showing him holding up a wad of £20 notes.”

When she checked her bank accounts she found cash missing.

Grey, now 23, admitted fraud but refused to attend court fromChelmsford prison where he is serving a 30-month sentence for unrelated offences.

He was jailed for eight months, starting after his current prison sentence ends.

The court heard he has 54 previous convictions.

Kieran Galvin, defending, said: “This young man is seriously troubled by drugs.

Well, duh! If you get with a bad boy, you are going to be burned.

First off - this is tragic that someone took their own life. Suicide is a terrible thing that leaves a trail of broken hearts behind, those of course belonging to the people that knew the victim. I, in no way mean to take away from the sadness of this story.

Though this isn't really a case of woman falls for bad boy.

You have to have a few things loose and need fixing in order to be in your mid thirties and leave your family for a 20 year old drug addict/criminal.

This is a case of two, already unstable and unhealthy people getting involved and it ended horribly. He is no doubt one top scumbag but he didn't destroy her. Nobody can do that to another person. They can ruin a lot of sh*t in your life but they can only take on so much of that responsibility.

Why else would she get together with him?

It's clear that she did it because he's an abuser, and that gives him power.

That story is pretty messed up.

I wonder if it was all worth it.

^In spur of the moment it sure was. Or at least it seemed to be.

Tragic, yet predictable.
