My 19 month old girl has a bad diaper rash. What can I use to help. The Dr. said to use vaseline. There's got to be something better out there.

Did the DR see her? Is it from stool or urine? Is she on antibiotics? I believe that fresh air and a little sun are the best healers. I liked the zinc based ointments best for protecting. My advice to friends has always been to let them go diaperless as much as is possible with just a long t-shirt and let her get a tad of sun in the yard each day, then use an ointment when diapered and change frequently. Is she completely raw? I'm so sorry for her, nothing is worse. :(

Yes the Dr. saw her. She has had diarrhea and I think that is what has caused this. I let her go without a diaper and she peed on the carpet!!!

I feel so bad for her. I bought some Boudreaux's butt paste.

Thanks so much for the reply:)

Better on the carpet than on her hiney! Hope it's cleared up soon!

Google calmoseptine, it's amazing stuff. Works well on eczema too.

Vaseline is good but does rub off quickly. I used petroleum Jelly. Ridiculously cheap stuff because I suppose it a non watered down version of Vaseline. It is thick and white in texture and helps to keep bodily fluid/poo off the skin .. completely.

My routine was to thoroughly wash and dry the area and apply a thick layer all over the front, back and inside leg areas. No other products used.

A good airing is good too. :)

Agree with all of this. When mine were young, sometimes, a "quick" diaper change would turn into a 15-20 minute play period with the diaper off, to let them take what we called "air baths" - just letting everything dry off and air out.

Also used the zinc oxide-based ointments when there was some sign of a problem.

But our main goal was to let them air out as long as possible - even when there was no sign of a rash - as a preventive measure.

Hmmm, now I have always assumed they were the same thing - that "Vaseline" was one company's trade name, and "Petroleum Jelly" was just the generic name used by anyone else who wanted to sell it... Are they different?

I have no idea. You may be right about the selling factor as it is definitely the same stuff.

Vaseline smells nicer but is weak in comparison to good old petroleum jelly. Vaseline is good only for lip care and on hard skin areas such as managing foot care, in my opinion. I weaned my teens off lip gloss and onto Vaseline due to lip gloss having chemicals that dry out the lips.

All I know is that nothing can get through a good dollop of petroleum jelly.. plus the cost factor is excellent. I used to buy it for 50p a tub. Must admit that I always did wonder why no one had cottoned onto its true value and upped the price.

Lotions and fancy potions just made my firstborn daughter vulnerable to rash so I took my older sisters advice to use petroleum jelly and never had that problem again with her or her sister. I believe it is a no nonsense, 'back in the day' way of looking after baby bum care that just really works.

Thanks for all the replies. I found a product that has really helped. It's called Ihle's Paste. Make sure to buy the brand name one. It is the BEST diaper rash cream. It is really think and has a lot of zinc oxide in it. Nothing works better. The Butt paste and a&d ointment did NOTHING,.

It must be good if its cleared the rash up that quickly. Thanks for the tip, will look it up.

She told me to cook some flour until it is brown, let it cool, and then put it on the baby's butt and it worked. I never thought it would work but it did.

That works great as the last stage in a nice jamblaya, too...

I used to care for a child that had a severe diaper rash no matter what mom and I did. We finally found out that her bm's were so acidic, the acid was eating away at her skin even after wiping her. We finally started putting milk of magnesia on her bum after each bm. Thirty min after that we would put extra strength Zincofax on her without wiping off the magnesia. Every time she had a bm we put it on her. She didn't have any more rashes after that.

Just make sure she is washed well with clean, warm water, then dried thoroughly. Then I'd suggest you apply a layer of Drapolene as it's very gentle and soothes soreness. Changing the nappy regularly is important, as I'm sure you already know. Sometimes these tummy infections trigger rashes like this. If you make sure she's kept dry and the rash protected from further irritation with the cream, then I'm sure it will get better quickly. If it doesn't, or seems to be getting worse, might be worth getting it checked out at docs as I know sometimes babies can get a rash from thrush.
