betterdeal Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I've been entertaining the idea that a traumatic birth experience is more likely in people who are nervous, worriers, highly sensitive &c. and may have set them up for a series of negative events in life. What was your birth like, and do you think it has affected your life?
Art_Critic Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 What was your birth like, and do you think it has affected your life? I can't remember back that far... I think that there is a built in mechanism that nature put in each baby when it comes to pain.. Baby's never remember what they went thru as infants.. If they did every single one would have been a traumatic upbringing.. Being born into a world and having to figure out how to make it..even breath on your own is a tough thing to do.. Forceps are minor compared to lets say 6 months of painful reflux.. It's a miracle actually watching a baby just born learn and adapt to survive.
denise_xo Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I have all those characteristics but attribute them primarily to upbringing rather than to popping out.
alphamale Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 i was a breech baby born au naturel. it has probably affected me negatively in some way but i haven't figured out how yet
Star Gazer Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 My shoulder got stuck half way out, and they literally pushed me back in (kinda), manually held me in place, and did an emergency c-section. I think it was a LOT more traumatic for my mother.

Cee Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 My birth was natural and normal. And I was breast fed for 6+ months. I am not a worrier, but I have developed anxiety disorders including panic attacks, agoraphobia, and night terrors. I attribute my fears to my abusive childhood. I underwent trauma therapy, which was helpful as was psychiatric treatment. For all my neuroses, I'm not a worrier. I may panic, but I never worry.
cerridwen Posted June 6, 2011 Posted June 6, 2011 I had a normal birth. But I DO have a mood disorder which I attribute to heredity and childhood emotional abuse. Before I received help, I suffered from anxiety, depression, hyper-sensitivity, and chronic worrying. I have had trauma therapy (EMDR), psychotherapy, and medication. All three have helped me be a fully functioning, happy, emotionally healthy adult.

Those of us that got stuck, were breach etc would have died without medical intervention. The normal pains of being born and growing up will have been evolved with. The extra pains of complications and forceps &c. won't have been.
