My boyfriend is coming to my sister's surprise birthday party and will meet my family. I asked him to come because my sister's parties are teeming with couples with young children and they barely talk to me. I need a buffer.

I haven't introduced a boyfriend to my family since my disaster of a marriage, which ended way back in 2003. I'm not too worried, but my mom is very cold and distrustful when she meets a boyfriend for the first time. But then she is much nicer on subsequent visits. I have been buttering my mom up by telling her stories about him, so hopefully she won't feel like he's a total stranger.

One thing I know for certain is that there will be no drunken scenes as my entire family is in 12 step recovery. I wonder how my BF will respond to the chatter about serenity, loving with detachment, and "let go, let God." My family is a little bit nutty, but they are all decent people. I hope that shines through.

I think your boyfriend will do good, and its a god step to introduce him to your family and I hope it all goes well for you.

Cee, I'm on my way out the door so no time to wax rhapsodic. Just wanted to say, good luck! I think it's a good step for you guys.

Cheers!

Updating the thread. The surprise party went well and as expected, my BF did fine with it. My mom was welcoming and warm to my BF. And my one sister was her usual warm and loving self.

My little sister has a very sharp tongue and made a dig at my boyfriend. He didn't respond and it blew over. He was perplexed by her behavior, but I told him that she was actually being extra nice. Usually 90% of her conversation is negative and critical. This time it was only 10%. She apparently liked him a lot.

It was stressful for both of us though. We were surrounded by strangers with young children. It was hard to connect and have meaningful conversation with anyone. When we got home from the party, we went back to his place and took a long nap.

But I would say the day was a success. I felt more bonded to him after the shared experience of meeting my family. I lingered at his place that night and he made me dinner and we had a chance to talk about the day.
